While playing through Phantasy Star 2 again for the first time in
years, I had some thoughts about Rudo that I wanted to share.

The Rudo character in PS2 is described in the game as a gun user.
When Rudo first joins your party, he has a weak gun as his weapon.
The first time I played through the game, I always equipped Rudo with
a gun, just because I thought of him as a gun user, But now, I think
it is better to have him use a couple of ceramic knives during the
first part of the game (until you get laser-based weapons). His
attack is a heck of a lot better with two ceramic knives than with any
of the guns available early in the game. The only real drawback is
that the ceram knives are a bit expensive, so you might have to wander
around killing things until you have enough meseta.

I would like to know what other people use for Rudo's weapons early in
the game.

I tried this before, and at certain points it's a good idea. When you first get
Rudo, a pair of knives can help his attack power a bit. But you get the shotgun
soon enough, and it's much more useful. As for ceramic knives, the cannon is
only a few points weaker than the laser shot, and is available about the same
time. IMO the cannon is better to have on him at that point.

The main advantage of guns is that they inflict a fixed amount of damage. This
is the same reason that the laser gun owned the laconia axe in PS1: the gun
always did 20 damage (to every enemy) while the axe could randomly do between 2
and 40. In PS2 it's based on defense, and even early on there are enemies with
high defense that you need either guns or techs to take out.

Now for the perennial question...
Kain: laser shot or laconia maces?

I usually use the Shotgun which can be purchased in Arima. It's like a slasher,
it can hit numerous creatures of the same species. It deals about 10 points of
damage to each creature which makes it worth using. Its only 800 meseta.

Those maces are pretty weak, and since you can't see how much damage is done to
motherbrain/DF, it be safer to use the laser shot. Too bad he cant use a gun
stronger than that! :/

Whatever has the highest attack power IMO is the way to go.

You will always have 4 characters (except when you start correct?) so having
a person that can shoot 3 or so at a time is pretty cool. With 3 other
characters with two attacks each, youll be doing enough damage.
