#1 POKEMON
Pokemon is an RPG game where you go around to various places and
capture
these Pokemon. You can then have your Pokemon fight against others and
game points and levels. Some Pokemon can be easy to find or may be
REALLY hard.
#2 GAMES
There are quite a few games on Pokemon. There are currently eleven in
Japan and they are Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Pokemon
Card Game, and
Pokemon Pinball for the Game Boy and Pokemon Stadium, Pokemon Stadium
2 Pokemon Snap, and Pikachu Genki Denki for the N64. Red and Blue are
the only ones out of and translated into English. Also it has been
confirmed that Pokemon Snap and the Yellow version will be headed to
the US soon! Check the release dates for any more information.
#3 NEWSGROUP
This is a Pokemon newsgroup! It is alt.games.nintendo.pokemon. If your
service provider does not have this newsgroup, try using Dejanews
(www.dejanews.com) to view this newsgroup.
This newsgroup does NOT TOLERATE AND I REPEAT DOES NOT TOLERATE SPAM.
That includes off-topic posts, porno (lemon/hentai) posts, you can
make $$$,
And other non-Pokemon posts. This newsgroup is about Pokemon only!
Some
gameboy/emulator posts and anything about the Pokemon show,
merchandise,
strategy guide etc. are allowed.
Also this newsgroup does not tolerate binaries as well. If you wish to
put pictures, either post them on a website, send them through e-mail,
or
ask to put binaries onto this newsgroup.
#4 ORGINS OF AGNP
When Pokemon was finally released in the US, and for sometime prior
to this release, there had been quite a clamor for a Pokemon newsgroup
to be created. The various Nintendo newsgroups were getting swamped
with
Pokemon-specific posts, and alt.config was routinely being requested
for a new group to be created to unload this burden. The alt.config
regulars, not being a particularly sociable gang, didn't seem to want
to help out the
Pokemon fans.
The process for creating AGNP started one day when an alt.config
reader
going by the nick "slight" [that's me] noticed this outcry for a new
group and decided to help. He had experienced the same general lack
of
support from alt.config almost a year prior, when a request for a
game.com
newsgroup was met with an apathetic response.
Slight learned about the newsgroup creation procedures himself and
went
Ahead and made his newsgroup. Now, he tends to keep an eye out on
alt.config for similar cases as his own, serving as a kindly guardian
angel.
The first request for a Pokemon newsgroup that slight answered was
from
"Pokemon Master", a fellow that slight happen to know from that
previously mentioned game.com newsgroup. Slight asked for PM to write
up the
charter for the newsgroup, and would send out the charter using the
special
newsgroup commands and headers necessary to create a new group.
While waiting for PM to write up the charter, another pokemon fan
named
Agent 0007 requested assistance as well. slight offered that if Agent
would write up a charter himself, slight would send it out. Agent was
the first of the two Pokemon fans to complete the charter, so his
write-up
was used in the create newgroup message sent out. So, the "lineage" of
AGNP
is kinda convoluted, with three different "fathers"! ---Steven L. Cox

#6 FAQ Pokemon Questions

Q: What is Pokemon?
A: Pokemon is a game from Japan that has become a relative craze
in America and Japan.
Q: Where can I find Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander in the wild?
A: You can't. You have to trade for them if you want them.
Q: What do nuggets do?
A: Absolutely nothing. You sell them at Pokemarts for 5000.
Q: Is there any other way to get Porygon other than the slots?
A: Aside from cheat codes or trading for it, none.
Q: If I evolve (Insert name of Pokemon here) with the (Insert name of
stone) will it learn more moves?
A: For the most part no. Eevee is one of the exceptions to this rule.
Q: Where do I find the Cut HM?
A: On the SS Anne, the Captain has it.
Q: Where do I find the Fly HM?
A: On Route 16.
Q: Where do I find the Surf HM?
A: At the end of the Safari Zone in the "secret house".
Q: How do I catch the legendary birds or Mewtwo?
A: You either use your Masterball or you bring them to red life and
Somehow put them out of commission (sleep, freeze) and use
Ultraballs.
(other balls work but your best bet is with the Ultraball)
Q: How do I catch Mew?
A: No one know yet. So far you can only get it from Nintendo's Mew
Contest. Or use a GameGenie or GameShark.
Q: Where can I get Gameshark or Gamegenie codes?
A: There are tons of websites that have this info. Check the sitelist.
Q: Which Pokemon can not be found in the (Red/Blue) version of the
game?
A: Only in Red: Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Growlithe, Arcanine, Arbok,
Ekans, Mankey, Primeape, Electrabuzz.
Only in Blue: Bellsprout, Weepingbell, Victreebell, Vulpix,
Ninetails, Sandshrew, Sandslash, Meowth, Persian, Magmar.
Q: How do I catch MissingNo?
A: Fight a Pokemon trainer with a Pokemon you can not get on your
version. (see above)
Surf along the shore of the island, don't get on, and you will come
Across Missingno as it is impossible to encounter these Pokemon in
your version of the game.
***Note this code can have some weird effects on your game. Such as
the
Hall of Fame and your use of the link cable.
Q: How does the Seafoam Island trick work?
A: See above. For Safari Zone Pokemon do the same thing as above
except
Go to the Seafoam Islands after visiting the Safari Zone and
preferably encountering the Pokemon you want to catch. Notice:
encountering water Pokemon on your way to Seafoam Islands does NOT
interrupt the trick.
Q: I heard there is a green version in Japan. Why isn't there a green
in
America?
A: The green version was less popular (it was called the "boring
version") but it is still possible to get if you know where you can
order foreign cartridges. (Only available in Japanese)

Q: Where can I get (insert name of Pokemon merchandise)?
A: KFC use to have Pokemon beanie babies for sale. Many other things
can
be found at Toys R Us, including Pokemon Pikachu(Pocket Pikachu).
Also
Wizards of the Coast has released a CCG (Card Collecting Game) for
Pokemon as well.
Q: The slot machine at the Game Corner is driving me nuts! How do I
win?
A: There is no "sure" way of winning. If you don't like the slots or
Keep losing battle the Elite Four and buy the game coins you need.
The Price is 1000 credits for 50 game coins.
Q: How do I wake up and catch a Snorlax?
A: You need the Pokeflute from Lavender Town. Play it in front of
Snorlax to wake him up. To catch Snorlax simply weaken him and use
an
Ultraball.
*Remember, if you fail you can always try the second Snorlax or
reset the
game.
Q: What does Fissure or Focus Energy do?
(Any hard to understand techniques will be placed here.)
A: Fissure has a incredibly small chance of hitting it's target and
Knocking it out in one hit.
Focus Energy increases your chances of getting a critical hit.
Q: How can I use (Insert name of HM)
A: You need to do 3 things:
1) You need to get a badge which allows you to use the HM. (Ie..
Cascade
Badge lets you use Cut)
2) You need the HM.
3) You need to teach the HM skill to a Pokemon. (only certain
Pokemon
can use certain skills)
Q: Where can I find a listing of all the TMs?
A: Try this site. It has one of the most comprehensive listings out
there.

Q: How do I get (Insert name of Pokemon) to evolve?
A: There are three ways that Pokemon can evolve
1) By reaching a certain level. If you cancel the evolution it will
prompt you again a after a few more levels.
2) Using an elemental stone.
3) By trading your Pokemon with someone else.
(See Section #7 for a list of Pokemon with trade and stone induced
evolution)
Q: Where is the Charmander Field?
A: There is NO Charmander field, or Squirtle Pond, or Bulbasaur bush!
Q: I used my Masterball, how do I get another one?
A: You can't! Once you use it, it is gone! If you have a Gameshark or
Gamegenie you can get one though.
Q: Prof Oak told me to get something from his aides, but when I talk
To them, they give me nothing!
A: The aides you need aren't in his lab. They are scattered throughout
the world. Look for them.
Q: Where can I find this FAQ?

A: These are all fake Pokemon. Some will appear in the Gold/Silver
versions, will others are just made up names for Pokemon. None of

Q: Is there a Bottle in Ceruleun City that lets you find PikaBlu
(Mariuu)
A: No! No BOTTLE!
Q: I heard there was a way to hack into the Pokemon PokeDex, and
change
your data.
A: Well, I'm sure if you are a good enough hacker, you could, But I
wouldn't even try that.
Q: So, where is Mew?
A: He is NOT in the game! Not in the TRUCK! KNOW-WHERE! He is ONLY
found
using GameShark or Game Genie!
Q. What is a Lucky Pokemon, and how can I capture one?
A. Lucky is the Japanese name for Chansey.
Q: Where can I get Luigi?
A: It was an April Fools joke they had posted on their page. There is
no
Luigi in ANY Pokemon game.
Q: I love Pokemon, and the GBC, but where can I get news on the latest
release dates for games?
A: Lots of places. Try doing some searches. Here is a couple of links

A: Not in the game. I REPEAT, not in the game.

Q: Can MissingNo. really mess up my game?
A: Yes he can. He can mess up your Hall of Fame, and even delete your
saved
game file. So I wouldn't catch him
Q: I caught MissingNo, and when I battled with him
He gained a level, but went down to 100. Why?
A: No Pokemon can go past 100, so he automatically goes back to
100, not matter how much ex. points he gains.
Q: I did the MissingNo. trick, and caught VERY high versions of
Pokemon like Snorlax, Cubone, and others. Why?
A: The MissingNo. effects can do that. Those Pokemon aren't even
HALF as strong as they say they are.
Q: Where can I get Pokemon Toys?

Graveler evolves into Golem when traded.

5: Newbie Tips, or, How not to get flamed

Not getting flamed on AGNP isn't really hard. A lot of people manage it all the
time. If there's one rule to follow, this be it. Don't be a jackass.
Of course, it helps to post like you have common sense. Don't post something
like this:
hi im new my pkmn r cool i kno evrythng so email me
That will get a lot of people to dislike and possible killfile you off the bat.
Don't insist you know everything.
Also, don't insist MissingNo. is a Pokémon. Don't ask how to get MissingNo. or
Block 'M' Chip either.. Those are two very played-out questions.
Something else to avoid asking: How do you get Mew without a Gameshark or Game
Genie? You don't. There is no proven way. Don't go saying you can find Mew
under the truck by the SS Anne. Don't post asking how to get the Pokégods or
Pikablu, or give out fake rumors on how to do so.
If you decide to join the Pokéwars, read the FAQ first. It'll save you a lot of
flames.
One more thing. PLEASE don't post binaries. That means pictures, sound files,
ect. Don't post in HTML either, some newsreaders really get screwed by that.
6: PW! Info:
The Pokewars is an on-going role playing game. It ain't goin away, so you can
killfile it or live with it, or even join it! It was created by Dreadite and
Regulus, and is similar to the Otaku Wars. Visit Elwen's site (above) for more
info.
7: Notes:
TGP stands for tnn.games.pokemon. It's a rival newsgroup that often tries to
start flame wars with us. They also run a PW! clone.

This is exactly why I want it removed. As long as they know who not
to ask, they're fine. We don't need people like you putting selected
regulars above the rest of us.

The problem is that there are still some semi-regulars who are misinformed.
You'll notice most of the people on the list are experts in a field: (i.e.
Maria on TR (James), Dreadite and Reg on the PW!, MWF and co. on stats, etc.,
Gyarados23, Kidvid, etc. and a whole bunch on just general stuff. If they
don't know the answer they're responsible enough to direct the newbie to
someone who can help them.

I think this is the problem with this section. The fact that
it's "off the top of your head" implies that you have some power
to make the judgment of who is a regular and who is trustworthy.
That's simply not true. I agree with Marcus, this section should
be dropped.
