[Tactics] Parsect Move Discrepancy???

odd--the opponents weren't dying on the first hit from Slash. Then it occured
to me--Slash *wasn't* critical hitting. I went through the Elite 4 four times
with Parasect and got the following results...
Try 1: 8 Critical Hits, 12 Non-Critical Hits
Try 2: 10 Critical Hits, 10 Non-Critical Hits
Try 3: 7 Critical Hits, 12 Non-Critical Hits, 1 Miss(!)
Try 4: 8 Critical Hits, 12 Non-Critical Hits
When I tried twice with my Dugtrio, he critical hit _every_single_time_. My
Pinsir only went through once, but Critical hit all but one time (probably a
fluke). Now, do I have a defective Parasect, or is everyone's like that? If so,
this will *greatly* reduce how valuable Parasect is to player's teams...anyone?

Hmm... Now, I have never seen Slash work weird like that for any
pokemon. And the Crit. hit rate is a bit high for you to be mistaking it
for Scratch, for sure. Weird...

I'm guessing maybe a Missingno. glitch, which would mean that it can change the
base programming of your cartridge. If that were true, restarting your game
wouldn't erase the glitch! Of course, if you didn't do the Missingno. thing, I
don't know what to say...

Same here. It's speed. Look at Parasect's speed. It's pathetic. Scyther's speed
is great, so he get's the critical hits. But because Parasect is so slow, he
doesn't get nearly as many. Try a Machop vs. Mankey. Mankey is faster , and gets
more Critical hits with Karate Chop than Machop. So, speed is the problem.

Good call (same point made by Dryad and KJP). This explanation is
consistent with how frequently Mewtwo gets CHs with Psychic, implying that
Speed plays a role in CH frequency even for moves that don't "always" CH.
However, something else may be operating. Over dozens and dozens of
trials that I ran, M2 had a CH frequency of 33% with Psychic. But I just ran
100 trials of an Electrode (also 100th lvl) using Swift, and the CH
frequency was only 23%.
Things I could imagine making a difference:
1. The move itself. Maybe Psychic just gets lots of CHs.
2. Whether the move type matches the pokemon type. Maybe Electrode would get
more CHs with Thunderbolt.
3. Some other stat - Attack, maybe?
4(a). The relative Speeds of the pokemon.
4(b). The relative base Speeds of the pokemon. The M2 was fighting a Slowbro
of equal level. The Electrode was fighting Mewtwos of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
level. Now, the difference is actual Speed is obviously much greater in
Electrode's case, but the difference in base Speed would be much smaller.
I realize we may be talking about two different phenomena here. That is,
perhaps the factors governing the CH frequency of moves like Karate Chop and
Slash are somehow different from the factors governing the CH freq of Swift
or whatever. But it seems plausible to assume they're the same for now.

Everything that I have read says that both Slash and Karate Chop have a
greater chance of critical hits. That is why they don't work with Sword
Dance, since they calculate things differently, somehow. Or did I not
understand what you just typed?

Yes, those moves do CH more frequently. What I meant was that while
Slash/KC/Razor Leaf have a greater "innate" chance for critical hitting, it
seems plausible that the CH% for those moves is subject to the same
influences that govern the CH% for other moves. In other words, if Parasect
gets fewer CHs with Slash because he's slow, perhaps he also gets fewer CHs
with Take Down (or whatever), as compared to a faster pokemon.
Anytime there's a critical hit (whether from Slash or Tackle, or
anything), it does double damage and ignores any stat changes to either
pokemon, including Reflect/Lightscreen.
