I'm finding it hard to want to discuss subreddit business on the actual subreddit when there's only two of use. Maybe after I open it and gain some new members...
Anyway, as hyped as I am for Sword and Shield, I'm almost as hyped for the Special Demo Version (as opposed to the demo currently on the convention circuit). I can't wait to see what slice of the game we get to explore, what events will encourage use to play until launch, and what Pokémon and/or items we'll get to transfer to the full game. It makes me want to make a special demo of our own!
So I was thinking we'd make a number of Non-Continuity "Demo" Events, that grant special In-Continuity Pokémon and items. The catch is that each player/author (rather than their characters) can only get one of the special Pokémon until the next mainline game is announced. Even if they do all the demos. However, they can get the special items from all of them (Provided they do one of them twice. I thought it should be either/or). Also, the demo for the Galar Region would allow the players to visit the region and use the new Pokémon before the games are released, but, of course, only in the demo event.
Of course, this raises the issue of exactly what Pokémon and items we can give the participants given that there aren't a lot of restrictions on what Pokémon they can have to begin with. And the Pokémon that are restricted are restricted for a reason. So I figured I'd loosen the restrictions on certain Pokémon I was on the fence about restricting, namely the Ultra Beasts. One of the demos would give the participants an opportunity to catch one of a limited selection of Ultra Beasts, since I think some of them (such a Guzzlord) might be too powerful to reasonably expect to allow to run loose in the game. Another would culminate in a Max Raid Battle against a Gigantamax Pokémon, which I have not yet technically restricted.
As for the items, I'd just make them up. I already have ideas for some, such as Totemite, which is a Mega Stone that turns whatever Pokémon that holds it into a Totem Pokémon, and Maximite, which treats Gigantamax forms as Mega Forms (in that they won't be giant or grant Max Moves or G-Max Moves). I've also come up with "Legendarium," also known as L-Crystals, which are like Z-Crystals. They correspond to Legendary Pokémon (i.e., "Zapdosium L"), but are instead used by other Pokémon to summon the "Spirit" of the Legendary to perform its signature move. I might have to make list, since I don't think all Legendaries have signature moves.
How the demos will work is that somewhere on the subreddit there will be a Meta post detailing a scenario for the participants to play through. For instance, an "Ultra Demo" where the participant falls through an Ultra Wormhole and faces an Ultra Beast (I plan to be a bit more detailed than that, though). Then the participant makes an NC thread where they write out the events. It can be a one-and-done, or multi-player. Each participant gets the prizes once the thread ends, regardless of the actual events of the thread (if the Ultra Beast escapes, for instance, they're still allowed to obtain one IC. It can even be a different one). We may have to keep notes on who has done what.
I've come up with three demos, though I've really only have details for two. And I'm considering utilizing Ultra Wormholes for all of them regardless. They're all pretty much the same, in that the participants must thwart an Evil Team from acquiring the special Pokémon. Alternately, there could be an option for player-characters that are on an Evil Team to go up against another Evil Team, Interpol, or whoever.
First of the three is the one I don't have much for. It corresponds to the ORAS demo and grants either Totemite, Maximite, or a regular Mega Stone. If there's a Legendary Pokémon, the participants just get the corresponding Legendarium even if they catch it.
Second takes place in the Wild Area of Galar, or maybe a made-up landmark in it. Either way, Team Rocket has cut off access to a Pokémon Den that they believe contains a Gigantamax Pokémon, and the participants have to liberate the area and take the Pokémon for themselves.
The third has participants falling out of an Ultra Wormhole and into a conflict between Team Rocket and Interpol. The Ultra Wormhole immediately closes behind them, but they are informed that another one nearby is still open. Unfortunately, it's guarded by an Ultra Beast, and the two forces are racing to acquire it. The quickest route to it is blocked by a puzzle that is essentially a Trial Site, and neither side has been able to figure it out yet and are exploring other routes. At the end is an Ultra Beast, of course, but the participants have the option of it clashing with either a Legendary or a Totem. If they catch the Ultra Beast, Looker will give them an Ultra License that will allow them to legally train the Ultra Beast IC (whereas my head canon is that they would normally confiscate it). If they side with Team Rocket or another Evil Team, their admin will hand over a Forged Document that does the same thing. They will then enter the Ultra Wormhole and, presumably, head home. Of course, this can also drop Legendarium, Z-Crystals, Totemite, Maximite, or Mega Stones.
So, what do you think? I do have concerns that this can upset the perceived balance of power a bit, especially if these things are only available through these Events.
