Happens automatically. In the log at the bottom, if your spellcraft check
fails, it'll say "So-and-so casting unknown spell." If it succeeds, it'll be
"So-and-so casting magic missile" (or whatever). I haven't messed with
counterspelling much, but if I remember right, if you're in counter-spell
mode, your check needs to succeed before you can counter the spell.

Thanks for the response. There's still one part I don't understand.
Do you actually have to DO something as a reaction to knowing what the
spell is that's being cast? Or is countering the spell something that
automatically happens when you're in counter-spell mode? If you
actually have to do something then I'm unclear how you would have time
to react, without putting the game on pause every few seconds.
The counterspell mode should make your character automatically counter
anything he or she can. I haven't used it though, since it seems more
effective to hit the other spellcasters with offensive spells, which can
both disrupt their spells *and* hurt them....
I believe if they cast something like "Mage Armor" or whatever then if you
are in counter spell mode you will cast a breach spell if you have it ready.
