Tomi cannot disarm the trap.
By using a ring of Elemental Resistance, reflex-boots +3 and speed
I managed to survive springing the trap.
Tomi cannot pick the lock (he's level 9 by this stage, I think).
Is there any known way to actually find out what's in there?

This chest has got the plot flag set, therefor it's completely
undestroyable. The difficulty rate is set to 34, which is probably
too high for poor Tomi at his actual level. The only way to open
it will AFAIR be to have some rogue levels by yourself and to
use a lockpick. However, there is no special stuff inside, it just
generates the random treasure of the "boss" class.

I've been unable to tell my henchman to disarm/unlock/etc
chests and such. How do you do that??
I finally figured out how to attack trapped doors from a
distance: BASH with a bow is the only thing that works
for that (for me). At least I can avoid traps that way.
But it uses a lot of arrows.

There's a dialogue option with henchmen, to specify whether they will try to
open locked doors and chests, etc. If your henchman is capable of picking
locks (Tomi and Sharwyn are), then when you try to open a locked chest, they
will run forward and try to pick the lock. Sometimes you have to move
slightly and try opening the chest again, so that they can reach it. If they
can't pick locks, they'll try to bash the chest or door apart.
Tomi can also disarm traps, which he should do automatically whenever a trap
is spotted. A pixie -- a choice for familiar for wizards and sorcerors -- is
a rogue, and can pick locks and find and remove traps as well.
I saw that, but it did nothing for me.

My henchman is currently Boddyknock <whatever>; he
just says "Evidence indicates that won't happen!"
whenever I click on a locked chest/door and in response
to some orders. So I guess he can't pick locks. :)
He uses a crossbow and is pretty scrawny, so won't try
to bash them open, either.
I probably picked the wrong henchman for a fighter. :)
Mike
Boddyknock is the wrong henchman for any character. :)

Hehehe. Well, he's doing pretty well. His crossbow
is pretty powerful, and his spells come in quite
handy. I just wish I could predict when he was
gonna decide NOT to cast spells; it's annoying if
you're depending on him to increase your AC, etc,
and he just plinks away with the crossbow.
He does die pretty easily, though.
