OK, I'm in Quint Jhareg's chambers in Chapter 2. I've died half a dozen
times without doing any significant harm to the magic immune thing (as you
may have guessed I'm a wizard, and unfortunately have Linu helping). Is
there any protection I can use against the death gaze - the rest of my party
are just killed straight off (although once it got both of the Curst Rangers
for me). Other than that I'd probably be winning pretty quickly.

Linu should be able to cast death ward on you. Death ward is designed to
protect you from death magic. I don't remember if there are any amulets or
potions available at that time in the OC that would protect you from him.

I was playing a cleric, so I was ready for him. I saw him and ran off to a
room to rest and pop that spell into one of my slots. I then went back and
kicked his butt.

Looking at the book I got here shows that (unless the book has an error) he
might have normal vulnerability to cold. So load up on Ray of Frost and Ice
Storm (it's a level 4 wiz/sorc spell, not sure if you'd have it yet by this
point in CH2).

His list of properties (Nasty!)

DR +1 Soak 10
Damage Resist: Acid, Fire 20/-
Damage Immunity: Electrical 100%
Other immunities: Critical hits, disease, level/ability drain,
mind-affecting spells, paralysis, poison.

From this list it looks like good methods of attack might be cold and sonic.
If you were much higher level, you could use control undead, but you
probably don't have access to it yet in chapter 2. Bodaks make great assets,
hehe. Death gaze henchmen...

I had a wizard and Linu, I think, and suffered no undue trouble with the
Bodak, maybe he got me once but I got him fairly easily on the next go. You
don't say what level you are and I can't remember what level I was then.
Maybe you need to use some protection spells Protection from Evil works well
as does Bless, at lower levels. You really should get hold of an item that
gives you some Spell Resistance asap if you havn't already got one.(Greater
Battle Robe from a shop or one of the sashes that turn up as treasure from
time to time, Aribeth's old ring if you found some way to have tons of money
in Chap 1). What is Death Gaze subject to? A will save? If so maybe you
should hide and haste/buff Linu to do the business. Or boost yours with
whatever Periapt of Will etc you happen to have on your person.

Well I have cone of cold at least, and I'll check up on Ice Storm, and I
think Protection from Evil is probably still learnt since I used it to
summon the big demon in the other guys chamber, and I find magic arrows from
my Feywarden crossbow do more damage than any level 2 spells I've got.

Ice Storm, Melf's Acid Arrow and Magic Missile all do full damage to Bodaks.
Empower or Maximize them if you can. If you need protection, go for the old
Darkness + Ultravision combo (yes, you do need Ultravision, the documentation
is wrong).

Cheers,
James

Woohoo got him. Just cast a Protect from Evil on Linu which seemed to keep
her safe, still lost my familiar and summonned creature but casting a
stoneskin on myself just turned it into a little slugging match which I was
never going to lose. Still, he did seem immune to fire and acid spells -
cone of cold worked a treat though. Are there any decent level 4 spells of
this ilk? Wall of fire and evard's black tentacles are nice when there's a
suitable crisitunity but half the time I don't get much chance to use them.
And for level 3, flame arrow is just pathetic compared to fireball.

I had the most trouble with this dude so far as well (I'm still in the host
tower, so maybe harder battles coming). I kept diing, but in the end I
'arrowed' him from afar and kept loading it until my saving throws worked
out ok. Its funny that shooting arrows seems to do so much damage and is so
easy to hit enemies too...

I used a x-bow and ran around the room shooting at him when I would get some
distance so he couldn't death gaze me. (lv7 Barbarian)
I stashed my henchman in a room first so he wouldn't get killed. ( I love
having a thief with me) Took a half hour of running and shooting to get him,
but I finally did. If you tire of that, I did get him to chase me around til
he lost me and I had a clear path to exit so I could have made it without
killing him. But stash your henchman first. (unless you want him/her to
die).

Damn, that death gaze is a problem for a solo melee fighter too :(

Didn't even realise he was a hard creature, or had any Death Gaze.
I think I was level 11 Ranger when I came across him. My Dire Wolf didn't
even die, I just chopped him down with dual-wirld Longswords.

I will never take my Ranger for granted again!
