What is the best mercenary companion? Is the "Summon a Creature" spells the
spells that allow me to summon my animal companion, or are they a seperate
thing? Thank you

They are separate things. With a druid you'll get your animal companion,
then you can summon one other creature using a spell. The spell level
determines the creature, for example, dire badger for summon I, with
elementals as about 7 or 8.

When you level, your animal companion gets unsummoned, but when you rest
it stays. Spell summoned animals stay when you level (until you rest) but
disappear after resting.

Dire wolves are pretty tough, yet if you want something sneaky, a panther
is your best bet.

I have found the dire wolves best at low levels and the panther to be best
at
higher levels. (but never discount the badger at higher levels, his ferocity
is fabulous)

Badgers?...Badgers?... We don't need no stinkn' Badgers! ;) Actually I love
the Badger, ya, he's not as tough at lower levels, but I will usually summon
,then rest so I can resummon him in the heat of battle if needed. All the
animal companions have some interesting aspects to them, it just really
depends on your style of Druid.
