"Aye! It's done!"
You get better weapons in Chapter 3 whether you wait or not. You'll
find plenty more ingredients during your travels. I prefer to get as
many weapons as possible in Chapter 1 and experiment with them. Once
I've decided which work best for my character, I stick with those
until Chapter 3 and then get the new, improved versions. But, make
your own decision after perusing this list:

But bear in mind that adamantine is near impossible to find outside of Ch1.
Thus, if you have aspirations of a Saintly Sword +4, hold onto any
adamantine you pick up!

Lovely website, cavebear! Thanks for the very useful link. (and the
advice!)

Yes, thanks, Bob. I have it (adamantine/adamantite) :`) safely tucked
away in the tin box. --Along with a number of strange and wonderful items.

Didn't someone say in another thread that they weren't able to make the
upgraded Ch. 3 version of a weapon which they had already created in Ch. 1?
FWIW, I've heard others say that the only adamantite is in Ch. 1, so it's
probably worth hanging onto if you plan on making any weapons requiring it
in Ch. 3.

Hmm, I seem to recall creating both Fey Spears and both Ironwood Maces
for my paladin my first time through. I'll soon be taking a ranger
into Chap3, and will be able to confirm as I'm quite attached to her
Desert Wind Scimitar, and will definitely upgrade. I think the problem
might lie in trying to use the actual Chap1 weapon to make the Chap3
version. Though why that should make a difference, I don't know.
When I went to the forge in Ch.3 I saved the game and then experimented with
all different weapons and ingredients. You can make the upgraded Ch.3
version of a weapon you made in Ch.1 no problem. And it doesn't matter how
enchanted the weapon is when you give it to the forger, +1, +3, +1 Desert
Wind, whatever, he'll make it into the same weapon with the same powers.
