Help needed gathering second piece of evidence pointing to location of cult in chapter two

I've been playing the game for a little while, without trouble, but I think
I've stuffed up recently....
I am on the second chapter, trying to find the two seperate pieces of
evidence that Aribeth requires before I can continue onto Luskan. Now, I
have one piece, a letter found on Solomon (his body, rather), but the second
piece, which a walkthrough web page has told me is located on the person of
a cultist hanging around Charwood, I failed to locate. I went ahead and
removed the curse from Charwood though, so now that I am backtracking and
trying to find the darn journal that the cultist should have dropped once I
killed him, I can not seem to find it! The walkthrough says that he would
have been in the Charwood Inn when I would have encountered him, but I can't
remember if this was true for me or not. Has anybody else encountered this
kind of problem? If so, could you please, really, please, tell me how you
got around it? Thanks in advance, if you can help me you will save me many a
sleepless night.

First, the letter on Solomon doesn't count as a piece of evidence of
the cult's location. There are three pieces of evidence, of which you
need two:
One is the mad dwarf cultist's journal that is found in the Realm of
the Spirit when you complete the Spirit of Neverwinter Wood quest.
One is the journal of the cultist trapped in Charwood. If you free
Charwood without killing the cultist, you should find him wandering
around the now empty woods. If he's not there, you probably killed him
and failed to loot his body and he's gone now.
The third is a letter to an assassin named Vardoc. After you've
completed a certain amount of Chapter 2, you'll hear rumors that a
nasty half-orc named Vardoc is hunting for you. Soon thereafter, he'll
pop up and try to kill you. Killing him is difficult, so be on your
guard. Once he's dead, you can take his letter and the dwarf cultist's
journal to Aribeth.
