I'm playing a Paladin in SoU, and have reached the Underground Ruins beneath
the Gnoll Caves in the High Forest.

I'm stumped, because I cannot figure out how to cast "0 Level Spells", or
Cantrips! I've tried resting of course, but can never "learn" them like 1st
Level Spells & up. I've even teleported back to town and purchased Scrolls
with the actual Spells on them, but they all say "useable by
Sorcerer/Wizard/Bard only" and always fail when attempted. I've also tried
giving them to Dorna, but she cannot cast them either. I need to be able to
cast any of these four spells: Flare, Ray of Frost, Acid Splash, or Electric
Jolt.
Does *anyone* know how? I need to cast one of these at any of the 4
Elemental Shrines in order to collect a "token" for the pool by the
entrance. I've already received one token for eliminating all 4 Elementals,
but I still need a second one. I know that the answer is probably so simple,
but I really can't think of anything else at this point and need a hint!
Thanks in advance!

Paladins can't cast cantrips. Look for another way of getting the token.

From what I remember I never did manage to get two tokens even casting
cantrips with my sorcerer.
I wouldn't be too upset about it though, since the item you'd get from
using two tokens is a robe with elemental resistance. Not exactly
Paladin-wear. (I used a cheat to load a second token.)

I don't particularly want you to FOAD, myself. You'll be more of
a cautionary example if you'll FO And Get Chronically, Incurably,
Painfully, Progressively, Expensively, Debilitatingly Ill. So
FOAGCIPPEDI. -- Mike Andrews responding to an idiot in asr
Not everyone can get two tokens, you only need one to go on. The item from
two is a bonus for spellcasters.

Well, it doesn't provide much armour! It's good for Arcane casters as it
doesn't interfere in their spells, but for a paladin, you should really be
wearing the armour from the Elf Tombs at the mo' .

PS. It is the convention in this group, and many others, to post a reply

follow any long-running threads.

You have to wear a robe instead of armor. For a sorcerer/wizard, for
whom armor disrupts spellcasting, this is a good trade. For a paladin,
it very rarely is.

OK.
I hadn't thought a PAladin would want it, since you're a predominantly
melee fighter and robes usually have sweet damn all for ac.
You'd have _some_ resistance to elements (it wasn't very high as I
recall) but you'd take a beating from everything that got close to you.
I pretty much stuck with the armor I got from the Elf Tomb until I got
armor with better ac. I'd never have considered wearing a robe.
I don't think my Sorcerer even wore it, it was that unimpressive.
Several, beginning with the fact you're supposed to be wearing actual
armor, not a robe. You do realize that armor does not interfere with a
paladin's spellcasting abilities, right?

If you insist on emailing me, remove all the **JUNK** first
I appreciate all your comments and advice. I'm a little confused though why
you all think it's a choice between either wearing armor or robe, I wear
them both at the same time and enjoy the benefits of each! My only problem
right now is that I cannot get the 2nd token which is needed to actually get
the robe itself. I hope this explains my dilemma a little better. <g>

Ahhh.
You've gotten "robe" and "cloak" confused, I'm afraid. This isn't a
cloak--it's a robe, which will replace your armor if you put it on. (It
can be worn with a cloak, though...)
Ah, the confusion seems to be that you believe when we say "robe" we
mean "cloak". That is not the case. The Robe of Elemental Resistance is
a piece of clothing of AC 0 that is equipped in the armor (chest) slot
on your character. It is not a cloak (also sometimes referred to as
"robes") equipped to your cloak slot. Thus, your paladin will not want
to wear the Robe of Elemental Resistance as it would reduce your AC by
many points (depending on what type of armor you currently wear).

Ok, I think I understand my confusion now! <g>
I appreciate all your help!
Thanks again, Kish & Barry!

Nope.
I played that part this weekend with my wizard and I got a tocket
after casting a cantrip on one of the pedestals (can't remember which
cantrip/pedestal now) and I got the token immediately and ignored the
other 3 pedestals. Then I got the second token from killing the last
elemental.

That's correct, every spell of higher level will destroy the pedestal.

As fas as I can see from the scripts, a spell of the opposed element
will give you the token like this:
fire - Ray of Frost
air - Acid Splash
earth - Electric Jolt
water - Flare
A matching spell will destroy the pedestal:
fire - Flare
air - Electric Jolt
earth - Acid Splash
water - Ray of Frost
All other combinations are considered as neutral and does nothing.

Perhaps the scripts are too tricky ;-)
