Can anyone tell me how to create custom portraits that don't crash the
game every time I try to save? I know that the files need to be
uncompressed, but I don't know how to do that - I'm not really
familiar with the .tga format and don't have a really great photo
editor (mostly just shareware).

Thanks,
Dave

You may know this, but hopefully you don't

Portraits
How do I make Custom Portraits?

Make sure they are 24-bit TGA.

Make sure you are using black for the blank areas.

Make sure your portrait is aligned with the top of the image.

Make sure the last of the 8 characters matches the correct image
dimensions or you will get a white blank image. I figured out the
names for all the 5 size portraits and they work, here you go :

#_#####H.tga (HUGE) 256x400 (on a 256x512 canvas) - Player Character
Bio

#_#####L.tga (LARGE)128x200 (on a 128x256 canvas) - character sheet

#_#####M.tga (MEDIUM) 64x100 (on a 64x128 canvas) - in-game portrait

#_#####S.tga (SMALL) 32x50 (on a 32x64 canvas) - party members and
radial menu

#_#####T.tga (TINY)16x25 (on a 16x32 canvas) - chat thumbnail

The first character define m_ male and f_ female , this is inherited
from the BG games series.

You have to create all the versions as the game does not take the
largest and make the rest

BioWare has said that the only way to have other people see your
portraits is to send it to them. They also hinted about the
possibility of having them auto upload in the future.

Then put the 5 TGA files directly in the /portraits directory where
you have NWN installed. Also, make sure you don't check the 'compress'
option when you save the TGAs in your graphics application. Reports
are that it crashes the game. (Thanks Jonathan)

And that's it, what program are you using to get the portraits in the
correct size/format?

Lview Pro is pretty nice, here's a link

http://download.com.com/3000-2192-4591664.html?tag=lst-0-1

Now if your question was about custom portraits for a custom module
your making then it's very tough, it can be done, but you can't add
portraits into the toolset without loosing other portraits. Same goes
for custom voice sets. The community is waiting for a patch to fix
this.

Good Luck

Well I've been having the same problem. Things work great until I save
and then BOOM! down comes the hammer.

Apparently brown/orange also works. I've downloaded _many_ imports from
the older games (BG series and Icewind Dale) and they all work fine and
have an orange(ish) baseline. (er.. bottom bit, or what ever)

Done.

All of the old imports have names like:

po_dw_m_BG2_01_H.tga

and they work just fine. Should they only have 8.3 characters?

` or ~ (read: left apostrophe?/tilde key) opens the console
ConvertPortrait <filename.jpg> will take huge format jpg's (in your
portrait folder) and convert them fully to the .tga format of the game
and make all the sizes. (I've done this too and the game still crashes,
it just takes longer)

Yikes, with the ability to hide viruses in pics I'd be wary of this
feature. (said like any pansy, lilly, fraidy cat, paranoid, delusional

Hmm... I tried both Corel Photopaint (for the editing and resizing /
exporting) as well as IrfanView32 for the resizing and exporting. Game
crashes.

THANKS! Haven't tried it yet though.

Apparently it isn't needed, I copied this from another webpage
describing the process, so obviously it needed additonal testing to be
more accurate> I did the same thing to add some BG2 portraits and it
worked fine.

I'd heard about this but hadn't tried it, I orginally created my own
from and large jpg and just scaled down the jpg to the correct sizes,
this caused the portrait to distort slightly but it worked fine,
played the game all the way through. The BG2 portrait pack that you
can get now works great(for me) and they look great too.

I agree

I used Paint Shop Pro, if Lview doesn't work I think they offer a free
trial.

For the life of me I don't understand why Bioware didn't include a
easy way of doing this, seems like a no brainer to me. I have to
believe they lef it out on purpose.

Maybe they just had too much else to do?

Ok well this is my third attempt at making a portrait. It's crashing my
nwn but the downloaded ones aren't. Would someone kindly download my
portraits and test them please?

I tried the portrait out and it loaded fine, I started a new character
for the single player campaign and selected the portrait, finished the
character and started the game. I walked around a bit without any
crashes.

When did the game crash for you?

Sorry I forgot to mention, I just dropped the portraits into the
portrait directory, hopefully that's how you were doing it.

I didn't create a hak pak for them.

Looks like someone has created a way to add portraits

http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/other/data/1027713302330.shtml

There's another download that states a way to add sound sets as well.

Just passing the info along

Wow thanks for trying. It never crashed untill I tried to save. Then it
would bomb when the save bar was about 2/3 or 3/4 along. Yeah I'm just
dropping them in the portrait folder (that's where you have to put the
.jpg to use the 'ConvertPortrait' function as well, and it spawns the
results there). I tried creating a fresh portrait from windows paint
brush and dumped it to .jpg and it bombed too (at the same point)

Well, I tried editing the picture and then saving it in Lview and that
bombed at save in the game too. <sigh>
