I'm kind of excited. Even on an older 1440x900 monitor, I have to squint and move closer to read, when there is a lot of text. I actually bought a 32" 720p TV to play on.

Too bad they couldn't do more with the graphics, though.

https://www.pcworld.com/article/3237947/gaming/neverwinter-nights-is-getting-an-enhanced-edition-compatible-with-15-years-of-mods.html

"Neverwinter Nights is getting an Enhanced Edition compatible with 15 years of mods

. . . So onto the most important aspect of Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition: It’s fully compatible with all old save games, modules, and mods. At least, that’s what Beamdog claims. I’m sure the community will be putting it through its paces.

As for the Enhanced Edition aspects, there are a few bug fixes included but it’s mostly features related to modern resolutions. You can run the game at 4K as expected, and the interface will resize appropriately. The art’s been given a surface refresh too, with new post-processing effects, shaders, and so on.

A bit disappointing they didn’t rework the models or do something more extensive—you could probably reach a similar state with currently available user mods. This saves people the hassle though, and if it gets people playing Neverwinter Nights again after 15 years, maybe that’s enough.

Regardless, it was the logical step for Beamdog. Icewind Dale II is apparently a lost cause—literally, the source code has been lost, minimizing the chances of a future Enhanced Edition. That made Neverwinter Nights next in line. The Enhanced Edition’s available for preorder today alongside three of BioWare’s “premium modules” a.k.a. expansions from back in the day. No release date yet, but we’ll keep you updated."

Hi Jack!

Nice to see something (anything?) posted in this NG again! <g>

I'm still playing (original) NWN1 to this day, even though mainly re-playing
older favorite Mods.
I *have* heard about this new "Enhanced Edition" of NWN1 before, but was a
little confused about it.

Would I install it right over my existing setup, or is it something that
needs a completely different new install?

Looking forward to going backwards!

Same here. I got stuck in Aielund (a dragon that is supposed to appear at the beginning of a module does not, so I get stuck in the opening area).

I started a new one, that is being developed, called "Swordflight." It's pretty good, though some of the dungeons are a bit of a slog. On Chapt 3 of what will be roughly 6 chapters. It's nice that people are still developing new mods

I'm pretty sure it will be installed over your existing setup, though it can also be a new install if you'd rather. It mentions that it is compatible with your saved games.

I think they just are tweaking some interface code so that the text and UI get resized (aren't tiny on high resolution screens). I tried playing on our living room TV and could not read the text at all.

I have played "The Aielund Saga" too, but I don't remember having that
problem, sorry I can't offer any advice. (It's excellent, try to give it
another shot!)

I've also Played "Swordflight", but didn't finish Chap 3 for some reason.
(Another amazing series!)

Good to know, thanks! I'm intrigued but would like to read up on it a little
more first.
(Thanks again!)

I'm sure I will. high on my list of 'best modules.'

I'm finding many of the fights to be pretty tough/impossible.

========== spoilers follow! ===================

I'm currently at the caravan area (cleared out the Haunted Village, the fire giants were pretty deadly. Cleaned out the cave complex with all the teleport traps, and that opens up to an area with a bunch of super displacer beasts.

Kept dying there, forgot that my DEX AC bonus is neutralized by their sneak attacks. Going to re-try with plate mail and using True Seeing.

Also kept dying at the magical portal thing, where you pay 50k gold each to go through. You're ambushed by locals who talk long enough that some of the short term buffs wear out. Any tips for that?

Had time to play last night, finished off the last 3 fire giants by leaving the bard somewhere safe, then using hit and run tactics against them. . . Ftr/rog with a Shadowdancer level, sneak attack, fight for a bit, then run and Hide in Plain Sight. Heal a bit, come back repeat.

Finished the displacer beasts with little trouble by switching to the +2 plate, and using the True Seeing (negating most of their sneak attacks).

Went back to the city to sell off loot and remembered my problem with surviving the portal . . . once you go through, you are confronted by some demons or devils (forget which, never really cared for the Bloodwar thing) with Fear auras. There is no long lasting anti-fear thing; Clarity does not last long enough to finish the fight and you have to keep an eye out for it ending.

No, sorry! (I always play a Paladin, so casting a few spells and chugging a
few potions usually does the trick for me!)
Occasionally (when losing a fight over & over again) the frustration factor
outweighs the fun factor for me, and I'm forced to "cheat" for a moment by
changing the play mode from Normal to Easy, but you never heard that from
me! :-)

Ah, thanks anyway. Being a paladin, you'd have Aura of Courage or something. . . I'd just remembered that I was thinking of my Clarity that would always wear out quickly during the conversations. Since your paladin is immune to fear, wasn't a problem for you :)

I think I'll load up on Clarity potions and give it another go.

Well, it's a year later and I finally bought NWN:EE. Couldn't pass up the sale at Steam - it's $3.99 through July 8.

EE does not touch you original setup at all. Original NWN installs to C:/Neverwinter Nights by default (or any directory you choose). Putting it into the root by default meant that you had to run as Administrator to work properly.

EE installs user files instead to C:\User\Documents\[username]\Neverwinter nights. It also creates a separate desktop icon. You'll have to copy over any mods, haks, saves, etc., from your old install.

Have only had time to start it a couple times, still experimenting with it.

The good - high resolution font is easily read from a reasonable distance. No leaning in and squinting.

The bad - Three hours to download via DSL.
The default install was so slow-running, it was unplayable. Could barely get into the Settings options. There was several seconds between each mouse click or keyboard press before it took effect.

Once in Settings, I fixed the resolution (was set to something odd and much higher than actual) and turned off a few things.

Started the game again, and it was normal. . . or so I thought. Started a module (Winds of Eremor) and it seemed ok, ran around picking stuff out of chests laying about. That part was fine. But once combat started, it slowed way down again and became unplayable. Turned of the PC and went to bed.

Will turn off some other stuff later and see if that resolves, but other than the readability, not worth the $4 yet - if it becomes playable, then $4 well spent :)

Sorry you're having trouble. I bought it a little while ago and have had
no issues at all.

Perhaps you have not led the pure and virtuous life that I have?

The worst part is, I can't even remember my sins :)

Turned off more stuff, still no joy. I may try installing this on my laptop to see if it works better there. Not sure what the problem is but for some folks, does not seem to have ever gotten resolved.
Glad it is working for you, though, as not having to squint makes dialogue-heavy mod a lot more enjoyable.
