I'd say longsword simply because their are so many more special longswords
than there are special scimitars, AFAIK. i.e fire damage longswords, poision
damage, cold damage.
Scimitars crit on 18-20, longswords on 19-20
Scimitars do 1d6 damage, longswords 1d8
So it's hard to say. Before Imp Crit, I'd say longsword because it
does slightly more damage. However, after Imp Crit I'd go with a
scimitar as its threat range would be 15-20 compared to the
longsword's 17-20.
Comparing magical weapons in the OC, the scimitar holds it's own.
There's a +2 Keen scimitar (Ula's Heart)--with Imp Crit your threat
range would be 12-20. There are no keen longswords. There's also a
scimitar with Haste on it (Scimitar of Speed). The Desert Wind
scimitars manufactured at the magic forges have fire damage equal to
the equivalent Astral Blades' sonic damage (1d6 for the +1 version,
1d10 for the +2).
Munchkin answer? I think with Imp Crit and the Keen scimitar, your
crit rolls would more than make up for the "nicer" magical longswords;
and the Desert Wind would help against most enemies other than fire
creatures--of which there are many in the OC :(

Well, that comes down to basic math. Have a look at

You should be able to compare your two basic builds there.
Good luck

This is only the case in the Neverwinter Nights campaign that comes with the
game...isn't it?
Nope. It's also the case online. If you play online you'll find that the
"nicer" (as cavebear put it) weapons are almost always the longswords on
almost every online module/realm. Like I said, the longswords come in all
forms; flaming fire longswords, acid longswords driping with green goo,
glowing electical longswords, ice long swords (I've never seen one of those
on anyone, so don't know what they look like, but I have seen them being
sold by mercents). I've yet to see a really cool scimitar, at least not
anywhere near as cool as the longswords. I guess they are just the most
popular weapon so the DM's focus on them and make lots of cool ones.
Although it seems you'll tend to find more cool longswords then any of the
other weapons online, other popular weapons that you'll find cool variations
of (i.e. elemental damage) are great swords, great axes, battle axes and
warhammers. That's been my experience thus far. Oh, I saw an electrical
double-bladed sword once...
Greets.

Yeah, but what the point when you can buy Boots of Haste in Chap. 3 which
gives you haste, or if you're lucky you can *find* them in Chap. 2 as I did.
And online you'll also find belts and gloves that give you haste.
Anyway, I really love haste... It kicks f**k*ng ass. :)
[snip]
Granted. However, there are other highly useful boots as well. Boots
of Hardiness add to both AC and CON (HP). Boots of Strding add to CON.
Boots of Reflexes help avoid the nasty fireballs. Etc. I like Haste
too (perma-Hasted is always one of my goals for any character I
build); however, the Boots of Speed are not necessarily the best way
to go about it.
Well, for my module that's almost permanently in limbo :(, I built a
couple of Swords of the Dginn. Scimitars that do electrical damage and
cast Summon Creature VII or VIII (depending on level of sword) 1/day.
:) But then, I have an affectation for scimitars and find longswords
boring.

Of course, it's completely within a module designer's power to make magic
scimitars more common, more varied, and more powerful. Long swords just
happen to be more popular.
Yeah, I'm with you there! Longswords have never appealed to me either,
personally. Also I don't like to use them because everyone else uses them,
and I want to be different. Personally, my favorite weapons are great axes.
Very true. My wizard and sorcerer (2 different servers) get knocked down so
much from dragons and players that I had to find Haste elsewhere. Currently
they have xbows for Haste so they can wear dragon slippers and avoid sitting
on their arse. This works great.....until they get disarmed. :-o
Excellent resource. I wish I would've known about this before slapping
together my own Excel sheet some months back. The power attack & improved
power attack toggling for 3rd graph is nice touch.
