1. Newsgroup Info
********************
1.1. How to find us
Alt.games.neopets (AGN) can be found though either your email client (e.g.
Outlook Express), through a specialist newsgroup reader or through
http://groups.google.com (search for Neopets). I'd like to add more
specific instructions for accessing groups though email clients or newsgroup
readers in the near future. You could email me and help me on this one!
1.2. Header tags
In the group we like to talk about neopets and a few other things.
[OT] To be used if the post is off topic from Neopets.
[SHOP] Use the shop tag if you are advertising your shop.
[SITE] To advertise a Neopets related site.
[QH] To ask for help with a quest.
[MERCH] If you are selling Neopets merchandise on some form of online shop
such as Ebay.
1.3. Unacceptable behavior
In AGN we do not help people to cheat. People in AGN regularly report
scammers to Neopets with good results as most are frozen. You have been
warned that AGN will not tolerate scammers.
1.4. About AGN
Toki founded AGN way back before time began. Well not really, but Toki
isn't around to correct me. At the last count we had around 70 readers,
although most are lurkers that have only replied to one thread so far, which
was a head count! So, who knows what the real total is. We have people
from all over the world in an age range from 6 to 60, so please be aware
that there are many different people here who do not all have the same
opinions as you. We have good discussions so feel free to get stuck in!

2. Neopets Rules
********************
This section is straight from the Neopets site. I did not make these rules.
2.1. General information
What is NeoPets?
NeoPets is a fun virtual pet site. You can create your own pets (up to a
maximum of 4), feed them, groom them, look after them, and watch them grow.
You can also chat to other people, play games, create your own Web pages,
send NeoMail, and lots more.
Does it cost anything?
Nope, NeoPets is completely free.
What do I have to do?
The first thing you need to do is sign up with NeoPets. Once you have
created an account, you can create your own pets. Click on Create a Pet and
decide which species, gender, and even personality you want to look after.
Alternatively, you can adopt one of our abandoned NeoPets from the Neopian
Pound.
What do I do now?
Now it's really up to you. You can go to our shops and buy some food and
toys for your pets. If the main shops are all sold out, try using the Shop
Wizard to search for some great bargains in the Marketplace. You can also
set up your own Neopian Bank account, put your valuables in a safety deposit
box, and set up your own shop. Just browse around the shopping area.
There are lots of games to play, including Hide and Seek, NeoPoker,
NeoTrivia, Dicearoo, Chia Bingo, and Scorchy Slots. Most games will earn you
Neopoints so you can buy more things for your pet.
You can also read our weekly Web-based magazine, The Neopian Times and catch
up on some great stories sent in by other members. If you think you can
contribute towards it, feel free to send in your ideas, suggestions,
stories, and pictures.
You can join one of our clubs or search for people with similar interests to
become your NeoFriend.
2.2. Safety Tips
While we try to make NeoPets as safe and friendly as possible, there are
still some things you need to bear in mind. If you are in any doubt, then
talk things over with your Mum, Dad, or a responsible adult who will know
what to do.
Rule One:
You don't have to enter any personal information about yourself to sign up
with NeoPets. You have the option of entering more information if you want,
but don't give out information about yourself, like your last name, your
phone number, where you live, or where you go to school, without asking your
parents first.
Rule Two:
If somebody says something to you, sends you something, or you see something
that makes you uncomfortable, don't look around or explore. Get your parents
instead - they will know what to do. If this happens on the NeoPets site,
please e-mail ab...@neopets.com and we will take the necessary action.
Rule Three:
Meeting up with people you meet on-line is not always such a great idea, but
if you feel you want to, there are 4 rules you should stick to:
1. Meet only people you feel you know well and have known for a long time.
2. Meet in a public place such as a mall.
3. Go with a parent or 18+ sibling, even if you are an adult yourself!
4. Make sure the other party is not going alone either, but with a parent or
other adult.
Rule Four:
Don't open up e-mails, files, or Web pages that you get from people you
don't really know or trust. Viruses are commonly spread through opening up
e-mail attachments. If you are not sure, it is best to delete the mail.
Rule Five:
Other users may ask you to message with them using instant messaging
services like Microsoft Instant Messenger (IM) and AOL Instant Messenger
(AIM) or private e-mail accounts. Remember that NeoPets on-site messaging is
only through this site's NeoMail, Message Boards, and Guilds - we cannot be
responsible for off-site IM and AIM messaging or off-site e-mail sent
between our users.
Rule Six:
Don't ever give out your password to anyone on the NeoPets site. We will
NEVER e-mail you or try NeoMessaging you to get your password. If anyone
does try to get you to reveal your password, please e-mail
ab...@neopets.com.
Rule Seven:
Always follow your family's rules for the Internet - they're there to make
sure you have fun and stay safe on-line.
Rule Eight:
NeoPets is completely FREE, but not all sites are. Don't ever do anything
that could cost your family money unless your parents are there to help you
do it.
The NeoPets Rules for Internet Safety are adapted from the brochure Child
Safety on the Information Highway by Lawrence J. Magid. Printed copies are
available free by calling (800) 843-5678.
2.3. Security
Contrary to what many people claim, no one has ever "hacked into our site"
and accessed user information, accounts or usernames. The ONLY means by
which a user can have his/her account stolen by someone else is when that
user inadvertently or intentionally gives out their account password.
People like to say they have been hacked, as it makes them feel a little
better than admitting they have fallen for a scam, or just simply given away
their password to the first person that asked them for it. However, there
are a number of things you can do to help keep your account secure.
Choosing a password - When you choose a password, don't go for something
really obvious like password, 12345, letmein, neopets or pokemon. Using a
combination of letters and numbers makes it a lot harder for people to
guess. You can change your password at any time by clicking on 'Help' in the
yellow side bar. Then click on the 'Change your Password' button. When you
choose a new password be sure to write it down somewhere safe in case you
forget it.
Keep your password secret - Never tell anybody your password, no matter who
they say they are. There are many nasty people out there who would love to
get their hands on your hard earned Neopoints and they will pretend to be
staff, have a secret code, anything to try to get you to tell them. No
Neopets staff member will ever contact you via hotmail, AIM, MSN Messenger.
The only Neomails you will ever get from the Neopets staff will be official
warnings from theneopetsteam if you do anything wrong. We will NEVER ask for
information via Neomail. If anyone asks you for your password, email what
they said as well as any information you have about them to
ab...@neopets.com.
Log out - If you use Neopets in a public place such as a school or library,
be sure to log out when you are done. To log out, simply click on 'Log Out'
on the yellow side bar.
Don't be greedy - If something looks too good to be true, chances are it is.
There are no secret codes to become rich over night; there is no magic web
page that gives you 1 million neopoints and fish neggs cannot be made by
anything. Nobody has ever cracked, hacked, broken into or tricked Neopets
and no one will EVER be selling Faeries for 1NP. If someone ever asks you to
give them something, or buy something from their shop in return for
something else, do not give it to them. There is no guarantee you will get
anything in return. Instead, report them to ab...@neopets.com and we will
stop them scamming anybody else.
The Trading Post is the ONLY secure place to exchange items. If you are
feeling generous, then use the Money Tree where there are many needy people
looking for donations.
Look before you click - If EVER you see a log in page, make sure that the
URL (address at the top of the page) says
http://www.neopets.com/loginpage.phtml, if it says something else, it is a
fake log in page set up by someone else to try to get hold of your password.
If you enter your username and password, your details will then be emailed
to them and they will have full access to your account. Whenever you see
anything that looks suspicious, please report it to ab...@neopets.com. We
will then get the page taken down and freeze the person who set it up.
If you have already entered your details, just click on 'Help' in the yellow
side bar, and then click on the 'Change your password' and change your
password immediately.
Keep your email safe - If you give away the password to your email account,
they can then get your NeoPets password sent to them. Many free email sites
do have security issues and it is wise to change your password frequently
and choose a combination of letters and numbers.
Don't share accounts - No matter how trust worthy a person may seem when you
chat to them online, never give them your password. There is no need to
share an account with anybody, if you do it is at your own risk and you must
understand that they can easily change the password and steal your account.
Is there anything I can do to stop this?
Yes, we take any attempt to obtain a person's password very seriously. By
reporting anybody that asks you for your password, or to give them something
for free, we will be able to stop them from contacting anybody else.
With fake log in pages or any page that claims to be a revolutionary
neopoint making program, the faster we get to know about it, the faster we
can take it down and freeze the offender's accounts.

Do you want to point out some simple netiquette (i.e., include the relevant
material that you are replying to in your post, or don't top post), for
newbies to newsgroups in general? Also, it will let people know what is and
what isn't considered acceptable in the newsgroup.

Will do, I have a few good articles that I can draw from but I have to dig

Good idea, I might indent the headers or something. I'll think of
something!
Thanks for the ideas, although I am going to refuse to mention anything
about top posting, I use both methods but prefer top posting, although many
prefer bottom posting. It's the individuals choice!

****
3.2. Trophies
****
Trophies can be gained by different means. The main trophies are given
out for game related objectives such as finishing a level or obtaining
a high score. Others were given out during wars or as rewards for
beauty contests and spotlights. Trophies can be found on the User
Lookup pages.
****
3.3. Neohomes
****
Neohomes were at one time going to be a really big thing.
Unfortunately they've been in development for about 2 years, with
nothing new since I joined Neopets nearly two years ago. There's not
much point in having one until the promised features are developed, so
this section will remain sparse unless people ask questions about it.
****
3.4. Neopian Pound
****
Here you can get rid of your unwanted pets for a small charge. They go
into the pound so that others can adopt them. Beware, once you put
them in the pound they don't stick around for very long at all! Some
kind Neopians adopt pets, paint them nice colours and raise their stats
before putting them back in the pound for another Neopian to adopt.
Whoever you are guys, keep doing it! Many guilds also do this as one
of their ways of helping abandoned pets find new owners.
****
3.5. Pet Spotlight
****
Your pet can be a star! Compose a story and draw a picture of your pet
and send it to spot...@neopets.com and your pet could be featured in
the daily news. You can provide information about your pets, links to
their websites or even write poetry. The great thing about this is
that you get a rather lovely trophy for your user lookup.
****
3.6. Site Spotlight
****
This award is gained by sending a link to your NeoPets website. Yes,
it's that free one that you got when you signed up to Neopets. It
can't be one from outside Neopets, it has to be that one. Send an
email to fans...@neopets.com to enter. You also get a trophy for this
one too!
****
3.7. PetPet Spotlight
****
Again, this is like the Pet Spotlight. Send pictures, essays, poetry
and so forth to pet...@neopets.com. Guess what? You get a trophy for
this one too.
****
3.8. Caption Contest
****
See also: Game section.
Every once in a while a new caption contest is added to the Neopets
site. The rules appear to be rather straighforward, "think of the
best, wittiest, funniest caption". All captions are moderated before
being being posted on the site for you to vote on. It's rather hard to
get a caption posted, but you should try because the prize is 2,000np,
a rare item and a trophy. If you caption does not appear on the site
with about 24 hours then it proberbly hasn't been picked.

3.9. Story Telling Contest
****
Apparently ever week the Neopets Team start a new story telling
contest. The idea is that they start a story and then you have to
write a paragraph that carries on with their start. Every day they
pick the best entries and post them. When the second days paragraph
has been posted you get to submit one that leads on from that, and so
on. The prize is 2,000np and a rare item.

3.10. Beauty Contest
****
I'll add this info later. I really have to do some research first!

3.11. Poems
****
While top posting vs. bottom posting might be a controversial topic,
fullquoting is something that nobody should do, as well as not quoting at
all. That's one thing you should add, as well as the fact that HTML is a
taboo on newsgroups.
