Not sure but you might have to dual boot W2K with W98.
Depends IF W2K will run the DirectX stuff or not.

Win2k will run DX as well as W98, if not better. The problem is
getting games to install. AFAIK, W2K will run NFSHS, but you just
can't install it.

I duel-boot W2k and W98 for that reason. If you've got the spare disk
space I'd recommend you to do the same.

I'm still working on this (auto updater problem - haven't figured it out
yet), but I got it to install with this from http://ntcompatible.cjb.net

1. Run Setup.exe
2. When you get the error message "This game only runs on Windows 95 or 98"
copy the entire directory "_ISTMP1.DIR" (or similar) which is located in
x:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Temp\ to a temporary
location (eg. c:\nfshsdir). Maintain directory structure when copying.
3. Click OK to quit the error message.
4. In the nfshsdir directory rename _INS5576._MP to _INS5576.EXE
5. Copy ImageCFG.exe and SetWin95.cmd from the NT 4.0/NT5b2/Win2000b3RC1 CD
to the nfshsdir directory.
6. Go to a command prompt, CD to the temporary directory. Type SetWin95
_INS5576.EXE <ENTER>.
7. Create a file called "_INS0432.INI" and put the following line in it:
" -fY:\SETUP.INS -z1 -cx -xC:\nfshsdir -x1"Y:\" -q10009" Make sure you
substitute Y:\ for your CD-ROM drive and C:\nfshsdir for the temporary
directory you chose in step 2.
8. Run _INS5576.EXE from the nfshsdir directory.
9. Ignore the error message "Can not run Unicode version of ATL.DLL on
Windows 95. Please install the correct version.
10. Run NFS Auto-Patch (under Start Menu) to update to latest version to
resolve "Invalid Win32 Application" error message

Anyone solve this? It happens on both my released Win2k build and Win98SE
boxes when I try to run the NFS HS auto patcher:

Initiating the update process...
Checking for updates to NFS HS...
2file(s) will be downloaded for a total of 1856523 byte(s).

Followed by a msg box titled "EA AutoPatch":
D:\Develop\NPS\NPSPatch20\Common\connection.cpp

Thats it. Any ideas?

There is a patch listed for NFSIV at 3DFiles.com that does not require
the autoupdater. I haven't tried it yet but you might want to give it a
go. The link is http://www.3dfiles.com/patches/#n

I can now confirm this works. If only it would detect my Voodoo 3.

Thanks for the info, still no luck for me after patching. I get the same
error with a newer build date in the message... Anyone else see this?

Erich,

If you got that error message when trying to run NFS4 it means the CD
check doesn't work so you have to go to www.gamecopyworld.com to get a
no-CD patch for it. I got the same message until applying the no cd
crack, the only problem you will find now is that the 3dsetup program
will not work so you will have to manually edit the registry or copy
the reg keys from a Win 95/98 machine.

Thanks Ross! That did the trick. I guess that the having both a CD and DVD
drive installed mess up the game somehow. Now I'm in the same boat as you -
trying to get the game to recognize the 3D features of my GeForce. I've got
the info from your other post and will go from there. Thanks again.

Ok, now I think its using the 3d on the GeForce - this rocks. Found this in
another post - it seems to tell the game to use direct 3d no matter what the
setup says: "drive:\program files\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High
Stakes\nfshs.exe" -d3d0

If you put a copy of the game cd in your dvd drive, with the original
in your cd drive, you may find that the 'no cd' error is taken care
of, allowing you to play the game without the cracked executable.

Although before doing this I'd recommend pputting an audio cd in the
dvd drive when playing the game. This may work, too.

If either of the above do help, let me know!
