Hi folks -

Has anyone succeeded in making Myst run with Windows 98 on a Gateway
P-100? The Broderbund technical support folks abandoned me after going
through the standard tricks, claiming that sometimes Myst just won't
run on Windows 98.

Symptoms: I start up Myst by starting it from the Start menu; the
pointer turns into an hour glass, then back to a pointer. The CD-ROM
is never accessed, and I keep staring out my Windows 98 desktop. I
then have to Cntl-Alt-Del to remove Myst from the Task Manager.

I tried the basics: uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime, turning
off hardware acceleration on the sound card, adjusting QuickTime Drawing
settings to Bitmap (BMP), removing all concurrent applications, and
turning off graphics hardware acceleration.

Configuration Details:
Ugh, here we go.

Gateway 2000 P-100 computer. 48 Meg RAM.

ATI Mach 64 video card. I've tried running both the automatic Windows
98 drivers, and the newest Windows 95 drivers that I downloaded from
the ATI sute (12-19-1996).

Ensoniq Soundscape Gateway OEM sounds card. Firmware 34, Drivers build 44.

Memorex CD-322E CD-ROM. Memorex offers no drivers; I'm using the
Windows 98 automatic drivers, "E-IDE CD-ROM 32X/AKU" (5-11-1998).

Anyone have any ideas at all as to why Myst might not run? It runs
fine on my girlfriend's Windows 98 setup, I'd just as soon play it
here than there, though :)

You might try to completely delete the QuickTime files from the Myst
directory, forcing Myst to use Windows QuickTime files instead. This worked
under Win 95, but I have not tested it under Win 98 so I cannot confirm it.

Interesting idea. Help me out; which files should I actually delete?
Here is my Myst directory as I see it:

Volume in drive C has no label
Volume Serial Number is 2B37-1ADE
Directory of C:\Program Files\Myst

Doubt it will help but look in C:\windows for Qtw32del.exe and/or
Qtw16del.exe.

I'm going to try installing the game on my computer, and will get back with
you on the results. I'm using Win 98 also.

Ok, I've installed my copy of Myst under Win 98. I've got Myst 3.1 version.
I had to change my color resolution to just 256 colors, plus delete all the
files in the Myst directory that start with Q*.*

The game runs fine. Do you have the Win 3.1 or the Win 95 version ? I didn't
realize my copy of Myst was so old <g>.

Congrats :) I've also got 256 colors, no fles in the Myst directory
that start with Q*.* (maybe I'm _missing_ something then?), and the
Win 95 vesion of the game.

I have an older version of Myst and a new computer with windows 98.
I get an error message (Myst requires 256 colors). Can anyone help?

Display Properties\ Settings and change to 256 colors before starting the
game.
