In addition, my "secondary base of operations" is the Balmora Mage's Guild.
Where is it safest to store items that I might need later?
Should I put them in a container, or just leave them on the ground? If
on the ground, is it best to leave them outdoors, or inside a fairly
large building (such as the Balmora Mage's Guild), or inside a small
building (such as the shack in Seyda Neen).

The drawback is that Thongar only has 1,200 gold, so if you have
high-value items, you're better off trading that to Scamp in Ghorak
Manor in Caldera, as he keeps 5,000 gold in stock, and gives you full
price for stuff. He's only a few steps away from the Mage's guild
transportation system, so he's not too inconvenient to find.
On a related note, if I need money, the building across the street from
Ghorak manor is an armorer, who keeps a big inventory of silver arrows
and bolts. By repeatedly buying and selling these, you can build up a
huge stock of them, and then easily get to Scamp to sell them by using
mark/recall.
Later in the game, when you've been finding/stealing high-value
ebony/glass items, it's better to mark a spot right in front of Scamp,
so you can gather together more than you can carry, from wherever you've
been scarfing this stuff. I've bought about 50,000 silver bolts from
the armorer across the street from Scamp, and slowly and patiently sold
them to Scamp, 1665 at a time, for 5,000 gold at a time, until my cash
is up into the half-million range. With all those silver bolts in his
inventory, you can sell him very expensive items, and purchase silver
bolts to make change and stay below the 5,000 gold per transaction.
I've risen to the top of various guilds, and been able to build
strongholds, but they're usually in locations that aren't convenient to
transportation, so they're not all that good for storing stashes of
stuff, unless you like to walk a lot to the nearest 'bus stop'. If you
just want a place of your own in which to store all your skulls and ash
statues, and other miscellaneous bric-a-brac, then a stronghold can be
fun to decorate.
For me, it all comes back to Thongar... he's close to the bus stops, and
on the routes I like to travel.
Mike
Don't put anything you want to keep in a container of any kind in the
Mages' Guild. They will be safe in the shack in Seyda Neen.
Personally, my favorite place to stash stuff is in the house of the
murdered man in Balmora (I forget the name right now). It's fairly
easy to solve the murder, then you can move right in and no one will
mind in the least. He has crates and shelves and tables to store
stuff on or in and it's in a handy location.

I think most of the chests and other storage containers eventually
reset--particularly ones that already have stuff in them. Adding a
mod which gives the player a house with storage containers that do NOT
reset is one way to go. In the normal game, you can eventually earn a
stronghold that will have some.

Hmmm. Haven't tried him - I've been visiting Creeper particularly
since I wrote a mod that gives Creeper 50k gold per day the point
being that I want to concentrate on game play rather than running out
of arrows at a bad time because of poor money management leading me to
run all the way back to town (been there done that in Gothic 3...)
I still liked the Suran Underworld Mod a LOT!
Is that mod available for download somewhere?
I've often got a dozen of 2600-4000 gp soulstones I want to sell to
Creeper, and it's annoying having to wait after each sale.

I've left stuff in many places but a couple of convenient ones were
- In the bunk room in the Fighters Guild in Balmora.
- On the floor near Creeper the Scamp in Ghorak Manor Caldera.

If you have CS you can easily write it yourself. (otherwise just skip to
the follwing)
------------------
Click creature tab.
Press "s" on keyboard or scroll down to "scamp_creeper"
double click "scamp_creeper" to bring up "creature" window.
Click on the "AI" button in creature window.
A window titled "AI Data - scamp_creeper" appears. Click on the "Services"
tab.
"Barter Gold" field can be changed to whatever amount you want.
Close all windows by clicking "save"
Choose "File" from main menu & Save. Type a name for your scamp mod & there
you go! :)
-------------------
A quick search over at PES.
"Ogrim" trader in Caldera description says he has 500k!
22 ratings for this mod avereged 9 out of possible 10.
Positive reviews: "Trader at Scamp's place who doesn't ask questions & has
bottomless pockets!"
Down side reviews: "Just copying Creeper as an Ogrim with more money."

There's a rather nice one in the Suran Underworld mod but like you say
getting to the top of any of the three Great Houses gets you a nice
stronghold. (The SU stronghold is nicer though - there's a nice one in
the Balmora expansion mod as well)

I never uploaded it anywhere. It was a pretty simply mod to write -
see if you can find me via Google (I'm on the board of two major
non-profits both of which give my real e-mail address which is close
to the one given above - I'll see if I can find it for you - I have't
played Morrowind in a while) and if so I'll see what I can do.

Just for fun I pretty much filled Ghorak Manor one time...
I use Dura gra-Bol's house and the Council Club in Baldora after
completing the quests that remove their occupants. I use other's but I
would need to start the game to get their names.

Isn't there a talking mudcrab? I once saw he has 20k for trading.
As I remember, I found him on one of the small islands east of Ald
Sotha? (that goldkanet filled ruin near Vivec).
> I still liked the Suran Underworld Mod a LOT!
Once I saw a underground mod, 250MB download....
Needs 20 houers with my modem :( (and rumors talk about version 2)
Maybe you want to look for Glory Road, ~250MB...
There is also a nice hunter mod out but no one seems to know the link.

No no no... I never kill Foryn when I play Dark-Elfs. I don't now
exactly about the effects, someone wrote, the other Dark Elfs will not
like you much.
> In addition, my "secondary base of operations" is the Balmora Mage's Guild.
Hmmm. Forget the Mages, except you join the Guilde of Mages. They are
good for traveling, buy spells and skill training. Next to the Mages is
the Figther Guild, downstairs is the best bed in Morrowind, when you
have Tribunal installed. Go in the room, leftside between bed and wall,
turn 180° and rest. The Dark Brother will come up inside the bed and the
programm can't move them :))) Now take out the Bold of Lightning spell
and kill them, their armor needs no repair and creeper can pay for one
set.
> Where is it safest to store items that I might need later?
Well, best place ever is a clean bandit cave. You can choose which one
and more important, you can choose where you want. A nice place is the
one south of Pelagiad (Maamaamu?), or a biig one is north near Retoran
Stronghold.
There are bandit caves where you have more chests than you can fill
with artefacts and most have more "rooms" so you can make an
alchemicorner, armor and weapon hall... and hehe, buy the animal control
spell and have your own moster :)

There are various ways to store things in Morrowind, but on the
ground??? Ohno. Animals do so, eh? When your containers lose content,
you should look for a patch (some old versions do so).
You can do the quest in Seyda Neen with Vodunius Nucius (ask about a
secret when he likes you more than 60-70). Then you should be a good
thief to open the door of his house, Vodunius left the island after you
buy his ring. I have done a mod, that hands you the house-key, when he
sells you his ring.
Later in the game, you can life inside a dunmer stronghold, realy nice
there. There is also a mod out, that changed the lightshows in the
propylen chambers. (I have done a mod to Hlomaren Propylen Building and
live there, best place for travel :)
But a realy nice home in Morrowind is next to Caius in Balmora. Useful
when doing the main-story and you can do that with low level. A short
text how to get it:
Travel to Vivec, follow the coast south, there is a ship to Ebonhard,
from there sail to Hla Oad. In Hla Oad go to Fetties Hideplace, inside
there is a trapdoor, go down and rightside.
Talk to Relam Arninth, he has a quest for you: escort slave Rabina, say
OK. Rabina will follow you, so don't talk to here.
Take the shiptour back and use the rider to Balmora. No attackers will
meet you.
In Balmora find Vorar Helas home (next to Caius). It is locked with 35
pt. Go left side up, there is a second door, also locked, which you can
open safe (with a scroll, a spell or like a thief).
Save your game.
Now go inside. Talk to Vorar, he gives you 400DR and the Medusa Ring
(188 worth). When finished Rabina will attack Vorar.
This is more a random event, sometimes Rabina will win, sometimes Vorar
wins (so: save your game before). Help Rabina figthing down Vorar Helas.
After he is dead look at his body, he has 20 moonsugar and the house
key.
Than talk to Rabina and she tells you where she is in safty. Means
escort Rabina via slikraider and ship to Ebonhard.
Go there to the Argonish Mission. Once inside, talk to Im-Kilaya he
will give you 400 DR and a big Thank.
Now travel back to Balmora and empty your new house. It is not very
big, but it is yours :)
There is a mod out (Vorars cellar?), which adds a cellar to that house.
Be warned, the NPCs (3?) inside there are damn good figthers but that
makes your home like a storage place.
Well, lets make the door to Morrowind ...
I'm in my third Morrowind run-thru and have found that the best place
for me to stash loot early in the game is a crate next to the Balmora
Fighter's Guild. It's handy to both the Fighters' Guild and the
Mages' Guild. That makes it convenient when traveling by the Mages'
Guild Guide network.
I try to use one primary source for selling items. That makes it
easier to find something I accidentally sold when I discover I need
it and don't have it a week later, which happened twice before I got
smart and started using one buyer. Also, using one buyer keeps you
from accidentally selling an expensive amulet to the merchant who
owned the one you "borrowed" earlier in the game. The bookseller I
use is Dorisa Darvel, and the crate is across from her bookstore. My
usual sequence is:
(a) Travel to Creeper in Caldera via a Recall amulet/spell and sell
everything he'll buy to him. I used the construction set to pump up
Creeper's daily cash to 500,000 gold.
(b) Sell everything remaining that he'll buy to Verrick Gemain, the
merchant on the corner next to Ghorak Manor (Creeper's hangout). I
used the construction set to pump up his daily cash to 5,000 gold.
(c) Travel to the Balmora Temple using the Amulet of Almsivi
Intervention. Sell any alchemy gear to Nalcarya because she has more
gold than the Guild and can buy those Masters set items.
(d) Sell books to Dorisa.
(e) Swap items to/from storage crate as required for next quest.
(f) Continue the game.
I normally use Folms Mirel in the Caldera Mages' Guild to do
enchanting. I prefer constant effect items on most things I enchant,
so I usually have too many items and too few Grand Soul Gems at
first. As I acquire exquisite amulets, rings, belts, etc., that I
have enchanted later, I store them on the table nearest to him.
I've installed the mod that allows me to mark ten recall points.
That makes it easier to reach my isolated stronghold and store items
there. I currently have three permanent marks: in front of Creeper,
in front of a storage chest in my Telvanni stronghold, and in my
Factor's house in Raven Rock.
Despite having those two bases of operation, I still frequently use
the storage crate in Balmora.
So, I suppose the answer to your question is to use a spot that's
convenient to your style of gameplay. "Safest" is any of the above,
though I suppose that if you want to find the safest in terms of
roleplaying, you can't get much safer than a chest in a Daedric
shrine. Anyone wanting to break in will have to deal with the Daedra
that respawn. Real world, though, I see no problems using the Seyda
Neen shack, Addamasartus Cave outside the town, any storage crate you
want in Balmora, any vacated house, any house you make vacant if your
character doesn't mind helping a non-critical NPC "permanently
relocate," the basement of some NPC's house in Pelagiad, etc.

What's the name of this mod, please?
Margo
search for Multi-mark and you'll find it.
It was zipped as part of the multipleteleportmarking2.2.zip file. It
can be found here
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=1397
but you have to pay to download it from their site.
>but you have to pay to download it from their site.
I don't believe that's true.
Margo
I got my mod from another source because when I clicked on the link to
download it, I was directed to a page that charges $3.33 to $6.95 a
month (depending on the plan) for a membership registration. I just
checked, and the link still takes me to that page.
Unless there's more than one File Planet.

The first time I went to their site it appeared that currncy was
involved in the process. It just appears that way. Sign up. Find it.
Download it.

>Caius Cosade's House.
In one of my games I made a Feather + something ridiculous potion so I
could carry obscene amounts of gear and dropped enough stuff here that
it was difficult to see it all. The game visibily went slower at this
location!
Another good place is in Creeper's house especially on the beds.
My favorite has always been Nedhelas' house in Caldera, it's right next
to the Ghorak Manor, and If you do the first Shrine Sergeant
quest(Imperial Cult), you won't need to pick the lock to get in because
Nedhelas will give you his key.
Be aware that the upstairs chests belong to Nedhelas so any items you
put in will be marked as stolen. But the containers downstairs have no
owner. It's dark down there, so you might want to add some lights, oh
and watch out for that respawning skeleton ;) (Leave the corpse so it
will take longer to reappear)
