Mod Review: Three Shades of Darkness

higher level characters. The mod starts out when you discover
a copy of a treasure map (there are several scattered around both
Seyda Neen and Balmora). A lower level character could start
the adventure....but would quickly decide that a level 100 lock
meant something about whether or not they were ready for the task
ahead. I finished the mod at level 37 (head of House Hlaalu and
Grandmaster of the Mages Guild, playing a non-power-gamed
character) and had some close calls and trips into the old backpack
for a few 20x60 healing potions.
The story line is simpple. It's in keeping with MW.
There are some new meshes (one of the swords looks so cool!), but
most of the mod uses standard meshes in what might seem standard
layouts. Except the mod is extemely well executed. In particular,
the ambushes and easter-egg-hunts for enchanted items and keys
are quite well done. Who would have thought a half dozen or so
skeleton archers would give the Archmage and Master of House
Hlaalu any trouble at all? Especially one wielding Foebane and
so could turn invisible and scout out the ambush (something my
little Bosmer eventually realized was a Really Good Idea).
The reward for all this (besides surviving the overly effective
ambushes by what seems like dink character and besides seeking out
those cleverly hidden keys and items) is an assortment of magical
items. You will acqure, for example, hundreds and hundreds of
nicely enchanted arrows...one way or another. Many of the items are
interesting--like a ring of constant +1 healing--but may look a lot
like things you already have in your inventory by the time you can
survive to get to them. But a few are on the uber (ueber) borderline.
One item that may be of interest to a lot of players: There is a staff
that restores +1 health, fatigue and magic. If you want an opertunity
to restore your magic with a constant
effect, but expect to have to earn it, Three Shades of Darkness
may be the mod you are looking for.
If you play this mod, I recommend having a good detect key and
a better detect enchanted item available. Many of the items are
well hidden in plain sight; you will never know they are there
without a bit of magic sight. I had such magic in constant effect
pieces and STILL didn't find all the keys or magic items. Which
is, of course, most annoying (in a fun way). Take nothing at
face value. Watch those corners. Save before entering. Search
patiently. Leave a mark outside for easy return (you will need
more than one trip). Save early. Save often.
I enjoyed this mod and intend to keep it checked.
