I am currently running Directx 8.1 and one of the kids has a game which
requires version 9. Any issues from a FS perspective, particularly multi
player. Is it possible to go back to 8.1 after installing 9??

Thanks

Geoff

If you install the latest version you shouldn't need the old one at all. The
latest version is an upgrade.

Hello Geoff,

AFAIK there can be problems in MP sessions if you have DX9 installed and
others have DX8x etc. The main problem seems to be that you cannot see the
other aircraft.

Guess if/when you install it, we will find out soon enough ;-)

Chris J

Wow BCA03!
I could hardly have imagined a worse excuse for staying un-upgraded.

Hi Geoff,

If you are running WinME or XP set a system restore point before you install
DX9 so you can go back if it mucks your setup about. There is no 'official'
uninstall for DX9.

Cheers, Chris P

Chris,

I have ended up doing the upgrade to version 9, so would like to run a test
before a real online session to see what it does/doesn't do. Hopefully you
can oblige. As far as I'm concerned I would have been happy with the
earlier version as it worked, and can't see what I personally will get out
of the new version.

I appreciate the feedback from Rubix but don't like to change the system for
the sake of it. One or two MS upgrades and patches have a bad effect on the
system recently. One of the IE patches that slowed everything down springs
to mind.

I know the feeling Geoff, had one or two strange things going on after
updating recently myself.

I will gladly set up a session, but Thursday evening looks earliest for me
ATM unless day time would be good for you ?

In return maybe you ( and/or others ) could do me a favour and try out my
latest web page of screen grabs. I have used a different method which
includes letting Irfanview do some of the compression, so wonder what people
think.

The page also includes some screens showing FS traffic 2002 doing its thing.
Good and bad ;-))

MTIA and let me know one way or t'other please Geoff.

Well, it's like this Rubix. I host a MP session every Sunday, and often one
in the week too. I don't want to install DX 9 and then find it is causing
problems in the sessions and then have to tell all the other chaps they have
to install it.

I do see your point though, just don't want to do it . . . . .. yet !!

Chris J

Chris, when I click on this link I get a page with text and blank space
where the previews (thumbnails) are supposed to be.
If I click on the thumbnails I do get the actual pictures - nice
screenshots, pretty busy airports - are you using Ultimate Traffic?

I'm using IE6 and Win2000.

Thanks for the reply. I will go and correct it straight away.

I am using FS traffic 2002.

Thanks again, and for the comments.

I can tell you from experience that DirectX 9 makes MP more stable with far
less dropouts and smoother visuals on other aircraft in the session. But,
you're right. The person that does NOT upgrade to 9 will have problems with
others who have upgraded. Nature of the beast. If you can get all who
connect to your MP sessions to upgrade to 9, you'll be pleased at the
improvement, I promise you.

If you're running XP, it should create a restore point for 8.1 to 9.0a.
You may be able to create two hardware profiles for game hosting.
9.0a is worth doing.

Thanks Andy, I had heard that, and have mused once or twice about it, but
don't like to ask the others ( up to 15 of 'em ) to all do something just
because I want to.

It will happen in time, and that time is likely to be sooner than later
because of CoF.

I understand where you're coming from. I fly in two VA's, and both of them
LOVE MP sessions. In one VA, we regularly have anywhere from 5 to sometimes
over 20 pilots per session, two or more sessions per weekend, and DX9 was a
HUGE step forward. Now, if RW could keep up... And if you're going to host
sessions with that many players, you'll need FSHost. It gets around that
16-player limit.
