Is TrackIR & three monitors a good idea?

(I needed to be more precise in my question, so I rephrased)

My new GTX 680 will run 4 monitors right out of the box. (cool huh?)

I now have a new three monitor option. I've never considered running
three because I'm perfectly happy with TrackIR. If I want to see the
side view, I look to the side.

But now I'm beginning to think 3 might be pretty cool with TrackIR.
For one thing you wouldn't have to set the acceleration as high and
wouldn't have to make as much movement to see to the side. It might
make using TrackIR even better.

But... then it could be hell will all that movement, looking at
different screens... or it could just an unnecessary expense.

I'd like to hear from somebody who uses 3 monitors in the VC. How is
it?

Haven't tried it myself but it seems to work.

I have two monitors but I use the main 28" Hanns for the flight and the 22"
Viewsonic for PlanG. Also use a HannsPree 7" tablet for IAP.

Personally, as much as I LOVE TIR, I don't think I would like it spread
across 3 monitors.

That's the kind of feedback I'm looking for. [thumbs up]

Actually, still a tough call.. the first video was what I was afraid
of, three screen moving all over the place... kinda chaotic.

The second one (posted above) looked pretty great... :- /

Go the whole way.....

You "need" 4 monitors.

4 Monitors on Desktop

4 Monitors using a laptop

If you fly helicopters a lot you can use 6 monitors. Otherwise 4 are
plenty.

Remember this old video? I didn't use TIR on this one but setting the
3 monitors to a high zoom you can look out through the windows and have
the instrument panel stable. You can then glance down at the
instruments just like the real thing.

Using 3 monitors to include the instrument panel was set to the minimum
zoom which isn't close to what the actual aircraft shows traveling over
the ground. At .31 zoom you appear to be crossing the terrain much too
fast.

This particular approach was set to extreme turbulence so you can see
the controls going back and forth to the extreme stops without a lot of
reaction of the aircraft.

I finally got a 4th monitor for my motion sim and the 8800 GTS crapped
out. I had a 7900GS I got from Ebay but now it's impossible to fly FSX
on this machine. I think I'll forward your progress to Gabri. :)

Basic Course and some other silly nostalgic disks. That time seems so

I found some foil backed stickers the other week which looked vaguely
familiar but I couldn't think what they were for. Now I remember; they
were to make the floppies read only!

A pretty good system too... No accidental erasures, no malware
invasions... Bulletproof.

I still have one of those gizmos to clip out a notch in the other corner
so the disk could be recorded on both sides. Got boxes full of blank disks.
Even have the old 486 DX66 that boots from them. Anybody want to pay the
shipping on this little treasure trove?<g>

Nah..... But I still have my old XT. It had a Turbo setting - 8MHz.

3d Pic down
An all-in-one Cordata with monochrome monitor and 2 5 1/4 floppy drives.
It cost over $900.00 back in '87.

When I got the 30 meg hard card I was at the "cutting edge" :)

But, to have 3 monitors without the instrument panel you had to use the
outside view? Or are those 2D cockpit windows?

What sort of a laptop would that have to be to drive a setup like that,

Or is the laptop just hooked into the main PC??

I know you're thinking about a FS laptop and you said something about
not dealing with all that spaghetti behind the computer anymore.

Well, I'm here to tell you that I'm using a laptop and all the
spaghetti is still there. About all you can cut out is a video cable
and power cord to the monitor.

Hi Varmit,

How so, mate?

I would have thought just a power adaptor, so its not running off the
batteries.

Oh, and maybe a TrackIR.

Oh, and perhaps a printer, and possibly one for a trackball,,,,,,

Rats, nearly forgot the joystick/yoke.

Oh, and the headphones.
