You can still do pilotage with default scenery. Autogen neither helps nor
hurts. Sometimes it looks a bit more real, sometimes not. It never matches
real life, of course, so if you know the area in real life, it doesn't add
anything. The worst thing, though, is that autogen slows everything down.
On the other hand, the basic scenery, with or without autogen, isn't very
fancy, but it contains most of the clues you need for pilotage. The roads are
there, the rivers are there, the mountains are where they should be (although
they tend to be smoother than their real-world counterparts, due to a lack of
detail), and many, many significant landmarks have been deliberately inserted
into the scenery. For instance, the LA coliseum is an important landmark when
flying visually around LAX, and sure enough, it's in the basic scenery.
