I took a couple of guys from work up to Sedona for breakfast on
Saturday.
As you know I normally fly a Piper Archer III, however it's been
unavailable because it needs it's 100hr inspection done. So a few
weeks ago I went over to Glendale airport and got checked out in a
172SP. We talked about that a few weeks ago. By the way I got use to
the mushy nose wheel steering in comparison to the Archer. So anyway I
rented a 172 but it wasn't the one I did the check out flight in but
it was still a 172SP just not the same GPS and a couple other things.
So this is my first time flying into Sedona KSEZ and there are a
couple things to mention. The Elevation of the airport is 4830 ft and
it sits on top of a mesa. It's nicknamed the USS Sedona because it's
like a landing strip. With mountains and hills all around if there is
much wind at all I would not have went there. There are up and down
drafts at the edges of the runways because of the mesa. Lucky for us
it was cool and calm the whole flight there. As we were coming in from
the south we navigated to the right of the airport and overflew it at
6500' and then entered the downwind for left traffic for RWY3. The
nice thing is that when landing on 3 which is the preferred way it's a
uphill landing and there is plenty of runway so I had no intentions of
putting the mains down till the 1000' markers.
One of the guys with me was a Helicopter CFI but he doesn't use it and
this was the first time in a small fixed wing aircraft. I let him have
the controls from just after take off till we were on downwind so that
was fun and he did a great job.
Here are some pics of the trip.

What's at Sedona that would require all those limos, or
is it an alternate for Flagstaff?

Probably for the dudes who own all those corporate jets and turbo-ptop
twins I saw parked on the apron.

Sedona is a getaway retreat for those wanting to...well, get away. And the
wealthy do that a lot. Sedona is also a haven for new-age types.

Great photos Chris - thanks for sharing.

Did you go into Sedona town it self?

Just wondering if the Shell service station is still there?

Tom is absolutely correct. There is a lot of money up in Sedona. It's
a resort town and a lot of people fly in and like to be pampered while
being driven around town in a limo.

Ok Chris - no biggie.

My grandparents, & then mum and dad worked a Shell servo here in Roma,
Aust. for about 50 years - up until dad passed away.

In the 1960's mum & dad were pen-friends with the managers of the servo
(I can't now remember their names).

The Shell servo was also seen in a hollywood movie from that era.
I can't remember the name of the movie either.

Gee - getting old is a bummer. :-)

Have you tried landing there in FSX?

Talk about updrafts!

Yeah I have practiced this flight in FSX a bunch of times. It's a fun
35 - 45 min flight from GEU or DVT

Cheers,
Chris

After about 10 minutes of a 45 minute flight in FSX I go to map view
and slide my plane to the traffic pattern of the destination airport.
Either that or I put it on auto-pilot and go do something more exciting for
the next 30 minutes.
My default FSX airport for KSEZ has a lot of tarmac and many building
structures sitting atop a huge mesa---but only 2 static GA aircraft and no
vehicles at all. Also, no moving air traffic either on the ground or in the
air. Totally unreal by the pictures you posted. Just another typical FSX
ghost airport. They remind me of some of those post-apocalypse movies like
"I am legend". <g>

There is a freeware scenery for KSEZ on flightsim.com. Don't recall the file
name but it makes that airport come alive. Many aircraft, people, vehicles,
buildings, etc.

Well it is a uncontrolled airport and I'm guessing that most non
towered airports have built in traffic in FSX but yeah it would be
nice to be more realistic. To add on to that my home airport KDVT many
years ago built a new tower on the North side of the 2 runways in 2007
and that's not depicted correctly either and they are the busiest GA
airport in the country but you wouldn't know that from FSX.

Ultimate Traffic 2 populates the area very well with AI. At 6:00 am I
counted 14 AI parked at KSEZ. Numerous Lears, Cherokee 180, J3.

Just north of there some 30 mile is Flagstaff, AZ where I recently spent
the night in a hotel. Near Flagstaff are three or four peaks (to the
north) which are ~12,000 ft (3500 m) elevation. Driving east across
Arizona, I could see those peaks in the rear view mirror for HOURS,
almost until reaching New Mexico. Is Flagstaff in range?

You could probably see Humphreys Peak (12,680' / 3850 m) from Sedona?

I have flown up to Flagstaff many times. In fact I have posted video
of when my friend Dean and I do blood runs up there in his Cessna 140.
He drops off a box of blood platelets for the United Blood Services.
Those peaks are called the San Francisco Peaks.
