There's one massive windstorm blowing through the northeast tonight.
Probably 15kts sustained, gusts predicted to 40-50+. So I figured what
better thing to do than to see if I can take off in a crosswind. I figured
if the winds at KSFZ were more than 25-30kts I wouldn't bother, but it was
worth getting in the plane and listening to local AWOS anyway. So I hit the
master, turn on the radios, and tune KSFZ AWOS on COM2. "KFSZ AWOS. 21:45
zulu. Wind calm. ceiling 4800..." Wind CALM? What's with that? Is the
Jeppesen weather data site not functioning? Or is it just not accurate when
it comes to winds?

Also, I've noticed that I'm getting cloud "blocks" recently. See
screenshot: http://www.distantgalaxy.com/clouds.jpg

FS9 didn't come out of the box this way, so I'm not sure if it was something
I added. I'm thinking it came from nVidia driver, since I only noticed them
since I updated. I don't have any weather add-ons, but I do have FSGenesis
landclass and 38m mesh. I doubt they would effect weather visuals.

Anybody know how to fix this? It's a bit of a realism killer.

"- the so-called "real weather" is just a plaything, you get more accurate
reports by looking at the behaviour of the frog in the glass,"

as per my previous posts, i disagree 'download realworld weather' on my fs9
is accurate everytime i use it how do i know? i fly local and look out the
patio window i have the windows in my compuer room covered the other day
i loaded up my local fight and in the sim it was raining i said: &%$#@ M$
bastards! (or words to that effect) then realized i'd been in command
central for more-than a few hours i got off my ass (something simulator
users avoid at all cost) and walked to the patio window and guess what? it
was raining . now i never get up nor ever go out nor to the window i just
load up a local flight and fly around my hometown just two different
experiences using the same feature in M$ FS9
also, i doublecheck here: http://adds.aviationweather.gov/metars/ using
this link from my kneeboard .htm file

I agree. I use real weather and fly mostly on the wet coast of Canada and
the dl'd weather is usually spot on. I don't understand why so many seem to
experience the opposite. I guess we're just lucky.

The answer lies in where you are. Jeppesen and other sources of METAR
reports rely on the automated weather stations sending in reports in a
timely manner. Some stations report every time the weather changes (i.e.
every time they issue a new ATIS update), some report on regular intervals
whether there is a change or not, and some just bother to report when they
feel like it. One weather station on the west coast (U.S.) went off the air
and their last report was never updated, so weather around that radius was
always the same (inaccurate). This is not an FS2004 or Microsoft bug, it's
a failure to be able to supply up to date information becasue reporting
stations don't do their jobs.

That's what I'm using (except that the system doesn't report driver numbers
the same way nvidia's marketingware does- I've got 5.2.1.6)

I rarely have problems with ceiling, visibility or precip, but this time the
wind was way off. It's still a bit breezy here tonight so when I leave the
"pilot's lounge" in a few I'll see if KSFZ's simulated AWOS picks up on it.

I wonder if that weather station was destroyed by the fires out there. I
was reading a couple weeks ago on AOPA that a VOR was knocked out:

I have also had accurate local weather. The uncanny thing was that
once we had thunderstorms here, so I decided to d/l the weather, and
sure enough, thunderstorms. But, to top it all off, the sounds of the
thunderstorms and lightning IRL and on FS were almost perfectly
synchronized. This was earlier this year with FS2K2.
