So I have spent the better part of the last couple of days tweaking FSX on
my new system, to get the most out of it. Increasing detail a little at a
time, flying the same flight each time to test each change.
My flight is fairly short - KBNA to KSTL. I fly the same flight plan each
time, same weather that I had downloaded, which gives me a good testing -
partly cloudy when I leave KBNA and a nice steady rainfall with clouds at a
low ceiling when I arrive at KSTL.
Anyways one thing I discovered that has me curious what y'all think. In my
Nvidia control panel, there is an option just below the anistropic
filtering setting, called " antialiasing - gamma correction ".
I had always run with this checked on - so I changed it to " off " to see
what the difference was. Well, I certainly saw a slight performance
improvement, but not really sure I can tell the difference with it on or
off - but then my aging eyes ain't what they used to be. I run anti aliasing
at 8x, not sure that matters into this equation. I also run anistropic at 8x
as well.
So I am curious, what do you think of this setting, do you run with it on or
off?
I guess I should also mention of course this is with a Nvidia graphics card,
not sure if ATI has the same option or not - I am running a GTX 260 SSC.

Many folks follow the "Nick_N" advice from simflight which calls for
the gamma correction to be "on".

BUT - Nick specifies that the settings are to be run through NHancer and NOT
the NVidia Control Panel.

I started messing around with my Nvidia GTX280 settings and ended up
with a horrible image on the screen with abysmal frame rates. I tried
everything I could to get a decent combination of settings and
couldn't.
In frustration, I went to the Nvidia colour control, and clicked
'Restore Defaults'. I then downloaded Nhancer and let 'er rip.
Now, I have the most beautiful picture I could hope for and super
performance. Sometimes, taking the advice of the manufacturer
combined with gimmicks like Nhancer, is the way to go. I'm not
proud.....I want results. I don't need to 'do it myself'. Heck,
that's one of the reasons I'm here : )

Perhaps I should give Nhancer a look.
Just the though of having to uninstall and reinstall two applications, and
enter settings, versus one when updated video drivers does not appeal to me.
Maybe it is not so bad though.

Well I have been reading both the manual for Nhancer, and NickN's
recommended settings for FSX.
I am liking what I see about Nhancer, especially it's ability to work in
more detail with profiles and to import and export them, which means will
not have to manually re-enter all the data after each driver change.
Think I am going to have to give Nhancer a try,

Don -
The most important thing to realize about NickN's settings are that he is
attempting to get your system and FSX operating in a "balanced mode". This
means, if you want to follow his setup guide - follow it exactly - do not
pick and choose which settings to tweak. Follow the steps and you should get
a smooth experience out of FS.
Good luck and Happy New Year!

Arthur.. using nHancer here--all the way. It's like you can see for
miles and miles (quoting someone else in the newsgroup) even
with 4-1/2 year old hardware.

I can see for miles and miles....thanks to Nhancer and all the tips I
read here.
Happy New Year, Gregory.
