negative here. Have you tried running FSX in XP sp3 compatability mode?
Nope, haven't tried that. Don't know what it is. I never had XP on
this computer (Intel 2 Core Quad, 4 GB ram, GeForce9800GT-512MB video
card)

My computer is similar to yours but with 3 GB of RAM, Intel 2 Core,
and a GTX-280 card. I've been having crashes at random intervals ever
since I bought the thing. I'm using Vista 64 Premium Edition.
Every day I try to troubleshoot the problem. It's become a new hobby
of mine. I'm beginning to think it's something to do with the sound
processor in the mobo. There's some kind of incompatibility between
the sound card and FSX which I haven't been able to nail down. I was
thinking about installing new drivers into the sound program (IDT),
but have no idea which one or how to do that.
My FSX would be a dream if I could fix the CTD's....

To eliminate the sound card, disable it in BIOS, and run
without. Usually the mobo sound cards are the most
stable crashwise, but aren't the absolute best re sound
quality. The addon sound cards such as the Sound
Blaster X-Fi have been known to have stability issues.
It usually has to do with the sound card drivers and
sound acceleration, in combination with the video drivers.
When you upgraded to Win 7, did you do an in place upgrade,
or a clean install? If you are running 64 bit Win 7, it obviously
was a clean install. The refusal of your 8500GT to work after the
upgrade is indicative of more than just a software problem if you
did a clean upgrade. Have you done a memory test? Try the
Win 7 memory test.
Are you overclocking? BEX errors have been associated with
running FSX on an overclocked system.
I (my computer technian) did a clean install of Windows7 32 bit after
Vista completely died. I haven't done a memory test and the card is
straight out of the box (I have no idea how to overclock a video
card). I will attempt a memory test and report back the results. My
FSX crashes are not normally random, but rather happen when I am right-
clicking views a bit rapidly, This problem has happened with 4
different video cards so I guess it's not the card.
Take BEX with confidence ......

I don't have "long periods" so I guess I don't have to worry about
that!
My next sound card will be an ASUS xoanar - I've had it with the SB
drivers and crashes - openAL games crashing on startup with x-fi
drivers in win7 was the last straw.
I'd probably just roll back to motherboard sound, but the performance
sometimes suffers in action games.
Unfortunately I've had motherboard sound produce quite horrible
artifacts when the CPU is heavily loaded. I got the x-fi when I
couldn't run Armed Assault without the occasional screeching sound.
Ironically, it's an openAL game that now refuses to launch in win7
(installed at the end of last year) due to SB's dodgy win7 openAL drivers.
Motherboard sound pretty much is never the source of instabilities
though. I'd always suggest that people try it before buying an addon
card.
