This is way off topic but that's why I put the OT in the subject line. :)

Chica was Kuma's soul mate. Kuma is gone now.
http://www.akita-friends.com/kuma/11kuma-chica1025.jpg

Chica, our little girl German Shepherd, has been having a lot of trouble
walking not to mention climbing on her dog bed. We've taken her in
several times and finally they tell us she has severe arthritis in both
elbows, both hips and some in her spine. She is 11 years old now, no
longer our little girl, but we can't see her hobbling around for years.
Tomorrow the Vet is going to do a surgery to remove some of the
abdomen fat which he will send overnight to a research facility in
California where they will do their magic and create the stem cells that
may help Chica. They will overnight the stem cells back and Chica will
again have anesthesia and the stem cells injected into the arthritic
areas. There is no guarantee but we are really hoping it helps her. We
will see. I'll let those interested how the procedure goes.

Chica is home resting now. Gabriella is sleeping in the living room with
her to make sure the other dogs don't bother her.

We now have 6 German Shepherds and one Belgian Shepherd Malinois
probably not pure blood. 3 of the 6 we now know have bad hips.

Jada was an owner surrender. She is the fastest and smartest dog we have
seen yet coming through here. Jada could be a great search and rescue
dog but that's not possible now. We had a family in Austin that adopted
her. Both were professors in the University and their home looked like a
castle. Two weeks after they adopted Jada they brought her back. They
had her hips xrayed and it was worse than hip displasia. One of the hips
was being held in place just by the muscles. There is no socket. That
right there made Jada un-adoptable. The few inquires we had on Jada
after that were retracted when we showed them the hip xrays.

Her Hips

Then we find out our long hair German Shepherd Costa has very bad hips.
She sometimes cried out when twisting or turning so we had the xrays
done. She's another that will be on pain meds later on in life. We
didn't get pictures of her xrays yet.

Costa is the lighter redish long hair. It's a bit hard to tell when they
are all wet.

You have really gone through the grinder recently. I hope it all turns out
for the best. It is awful to see our canine friends suffer this way.

Just been looking - Jada looks very young and a beautiful beast, such a
shame re the hips. And Shadow, another beautiful animal, but to see her
hiding her head is very sad. What on earth did her previous owners do to
her to make her so timid?
Non doggy types think GSD's are such viscous dogs, if only they knew!!
All the best
Alex - (I'm only allowed one at a time - 6 would send my owner into orbit
lol)

When we lived in town we were allowed 3 pets only. They didn't enforce
the law. The Animal Shelter would call us if they were about to put
down a GSD or an Akita. Several times we would take puppy's in that
were too young to keep in the shelter. They knew we had more than 3.

But the house was too small so we built out in the countryside.

Shadow. We don't know what happened to her before we took her in. We
know she was in an outside pen when the area was flooded. We were told
they had to swim into the pen to keep her from drowning. She is with me
almost all the time but if Gabriella and I both look at her at the same
time she runs in the closet, her hiding place. She is not as bad now
when strangers come but she stays close to me if we are in the yard
until they leave. We knew almost immediately that Shadow was
un-adoptable. She was just too scared of strangers or strange places.
She would freeze and tremble uncontrollably. She also has Urinary
incontinence and has to take medication every day for that.

They are beautiful friends Bob and very lucky to have you and Gabrielle. The
picture of Shadow with her muzzle under the rainspout was sad. Glad to see
she's coming around. I had a GSD male named Shadow many years ago - he was a
great friend.

Hope things keep getting better!

Hi Downloader,

What amazes me is the emotional strength that both Gabriella and
yourself display - you must both have very big hearts, mate!

Shadow is such a great dog. She expects, when Gabriella gets in bed for
the night, that I throw her 4 or 5 small treats. I had a Lab back in
1988 when I was single that would wait and as soon as I started getting
ready for bed he would jump in first. When I was living in the BOQ in
Germany I only had a single size bed and there were some shoving matches
throughout the night. :)

So when Shadow sees Gabriella get in bed she jumps on the bed beside her
and watches me, ready for her treats.

Thanks John.

We only planned to have 2 dogs. Kuma and Chica. Chica goes in for her
stem cell injections in a few hours. It's 5:29am. We are hoping for the
best.

But from our rescue work we took dogs in that, for one reason or
another, weren't adoptable. You know Psycho Dogs one of them. So the
dogs that weren't adoptable, (or returned) became part of our pack. Most
have health problems and are on daily medication. Kuma was the worst
off. His Chemo and digestive enzymes cost over $300.00 a month.

We do like animals though. I have some pet Toads in the back yard who
keep the cricket problem down. They have been missing for 3 nights now.
I was weed eating the tall grass behind the pool and one of the sticks
I was picking up suddenly took off. It was a fully grown 3 or 4 foot
Rat Snake and Toads are one of their favorite foods. Now I wonder if
I'll see my pet toads again. :(

Chica is home now. She's in a lot of pain and we're giving medication to
help stop the pain. It doesn't seem to be working yet. She is crying a
lot and I think I would too if someone had stuck a big needle in my
elbows and hips. I made a short video showing Chica and Blitz racing
around the yard way back when and then showing her when she got home
from the Vet. They say it will be 3 to 4 weeks before we (hopefully)
see any improvement.

Sad to see an animal in pain like that, but their ability to recover and in
relatively short time compared to us humans is amazing.
Still, through the pain she still manages to wag her tail and look glad to
be home.
Good luck with her, keep us updated.
