LOD_RADIUS setting in FSX

There are currently two tweaks in the CFG files.

1) [Display]
//TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40 (default))
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=60

2) [TERRAIN]
//LOD_RADIUS 5.5, 6.5, 7.5 or 8.5 (default=4.5)
LOD_RADIUS=4.500000

Can recall editing the LOD_RAD in FS8/9 with some good
results. Each time I change it in the CFG file, FSX sets it back
to the default after the flight. What is the relation with this
parameter? what controls it? and is there any use in tweaking?

The LOD_RADIUS will be reset any time you make changes to
your settings from within the FSX menu system.

If you don't make any changes, the setting should remain
intact. At least it does on my system where I have it
set to 6.5.

I'm not sure how it works in FSX, but in FS9 it is like this:

The world is defined as a set of tiles approx 1.3 km on a side
(the actual size varies with latitude). each tile exists as a
4.8m resolution textures (256x256) with lower resolution mipmaps
included. The LOD radius determines how many tiles are drawn for
each mip level (and what mesh resolution is used) extending out
from the point under the viewpoint. 4.5 gives 4 tiles at each
mip level (this was the max for FS9). It's said (don't know if
it's been proven) that FSX can go higher - 6 or more. The terrain
draw system seems to be biased in that when the aircraft is moving,
tiles in front of the aircraft get redrawn at next higher mip than
tiles to the side.

It seems to be holding 6.5 in the CFG file. The Alps looked splendid
last night at that setting. Will soon try out 7.5

Have it set for 7.50 now. Last night I started up in Kabul and there
were all kinds of black spikes jumping up from the terrain in the
distance, but only for a second or two. After that, there were no other
artifacts for the rest of the F-18 flight over Pakistan, returning with
only limited fuel. Forgot to turn on FSScreen so there are no screen
caps of Kabul.

Maybe it's best to edit fsx.cfg before flight and then leave it be.
Are there any stand-alone utilities with a GUI for editing fsx.cfg?
Umm.. maybe not. Best to use Notepad. :))

Thanks.. but I was thinking about a fsx.CFG editor.
It would look like the Display Properties dialog boxes
but with even more parameters.
