Press the '-' (minus) key?
To zoom in "+" key, to zoom out "-" key, but I don't think that, is in fact,
what you are asking.
To adjust the distance; I know how to do it in FS9, but I don't think it's
possible in FSX.
There is a lot in Google on this subject, Peter, start here,

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwind.
I usually go to Chase view (when in Spot, hit the A key once to cycle to
a rear Chase view), then use Control plus = key to increase distance,
Control plus - key to decrease. That's about the first thing I do when
starting a flight in FSX.... You're right, default is too close..

Peter -
In the same folder as your FSX.CFG file is a file called CAMERAS.CFG.
Back it up first!
Open it in notepad - you'll see various camera definitions - look for SPOT -
IIRC it's definition 003
Look down the list for DEFAULT ZOOM
Change it to what you want and save the CFG file.
Should do the trick.

Can I change the view distance in addition to the view zoom? I'm hearing
that "zoom" can involve fish-eye distortion.
peter
AYup, that's it. But sometimes I find I have to click on the screen to
activate it. Same with re-sizing a VC panel.

Not sure, Peter. However, if you backup the original, you can play to your
heart's content until you get what you like. Google camera.cfg settings and
you should get more info.

The minus and plus keys aren't working for me in the regular Spot View, but
they DO work in "Locked Spot View."
Is that what everybody usually uses? Why would I use the locked view instead
of the regular one? It's pan and movement seem too stiff to me.
peter
Don't use the keypad "+" and "-". Use F11 for the spot view, then
"-" and "=" in the number row. Using Shift+arrow keys, you can
pan around your plane to look at it from any angle.
I don't know, the "regular" spot view seems too wiggly to me. :-) But
either view works fine for me, just that sometimes I have to click in the
screen to activate it before it will zoom.

I've set up a button (rocker switch) on the Saitek throttle that will
move the Spot View camera toward or away from the AC. It works
fine but the action is rather slow. Look in the Controls section and
define something to change the camera distance `on the fly´ like
one of those button pairs on your throttle.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the assignments in FSX's controls.
