I am not a programmer, so don't know where to begin to make the
desired change. Any suggestions?

Martin,
It is a very simple editing procedure. It just takes a little
tweaking of the day, night, and luminous lines in the [color] section
(usually last entries) of the panel.cfg file.
Rather than writing it all out for you, just download the following
file from flightsim.com. It is an excellent step by step tutorial for
adjusting the cockpit lighting:
File Name: ckpl_tut.zip Size: 2,310,914 Date: 10-26-2005
Modifying Cockpit Nighttime Lighting in FS2004 - an Illustrated
Tutorial. This tutorial will show you how to easily modify the night
time lighting of virtually any panel. Also included is a replacement
set of panel icons which can be used to light the default panel icons
at night also. No programming knowledge is required. The tutorial uses
the default B737-400 as an example but the concept may be applied to
any panel. Please unzip (using folders option) to a temporary location
and follow the tutorial instructions. Compiled in .doc and .pdf
formats for your flying enjoyment by David "Opa" Marshall.
This was written for FS9, but I believe is still applicable for FSX
panels.

Many thanks, Prop. I will certainly follow up on your suggestion. I
suspected that there was a tweak possible, but didn't know what it
was.
Just tried out the suggested fix - it doesn't appear to work. Further
reading suggests to me that the VC gauges (which I was referring to,
but failed to state) may be affected by settings in the *.air file and
therefore not easily accessible.
Air files can be edited using AirEd.
Version 1.52 is available here:
http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=AirEd&CatID=root&Go=Search
There may also be other/newer/better programs that can do it too, but I
don't know any.
A .air file's a .air file (i.e. just a text file), so I don't imagine it
would make any difference which version of the Sim' it originated from, but
hey, I've been wrong before.
As far as using it goes, and interpreting/altering values, Gregory, aka
Spreadsheet Boy, is your man, so if you ping him nicely, he might be able to
make some spare time available to give you a few pointers.
Good luck, mate.
Regards,
John Ward

Well .... that little question helped me a lot. Now to dim those lights.
Thanks

Thanks for the idea, John, but the file description says that it only
works up to FS2004. Apparently gauges were altered in FSX, along with
many other things, which make earlier utilities unusable.
