The HUD is interesting...

Is this the first civilian use of jet fighter HUD?

Gosh the HUD and the FMS are MASSIVE. The HUG to me looks dangerously
large and would intrude on peripheral vision unlike the 737 NG which
uses a smaller one. I like the ability to call up charts on the FMS

Nope. The 737 NG has been using them for a good while, and also a few
other planes. With the Boeing, it's actually referred to as the "HGS".
It's not quite the same as the typical fighter HUD like you see in
the F-16's, FA/18's, etc..
The Boeing HGS more mimics the PFD, with a tad more info shown.
The 737 video I posted last night used it on approach. "Big D in HD".

The 737NG HGS is almost exactly the same as the one on the 787.
And the one in the PMDG 737NGX in the video is pretty much a dead
ringer for the real deal.

That picture is an insert to show the drivers view.. It's not
actually that large in the cockpit, and will be directly in
front of the captain. But, with the 787, I think you can get
them with a HGS on both sides.. One for the F/O too..
I think anyway..

I googled "hud pfd hgs". First result: Avionics Handbook

Well... I am not ready to read on. :)

Does real life airplanes use this periscope like thing?

Upper left corner in the following picture:

Something like the old bomb sights in WW2, but made retractable!

I couldn't find an interior view on that site.

But this German site, pix #6 shows the cockpit:

Doesn't seem so out of line to me.
I'd still like to know what the 2 humps to the right and left of the
throttles on the pedestal are for?

I saw them first on the A380:
http://www.airliners.net/photo/0957790/

At first I thought they might be hand rests to stabilize the hand for
entering data on a keypad right infront of the humps. But the 787
doesn't seem to have a keypad there.

It's not a periscope but a mix of night viewing goggles, HUD and argumentet
reality, the gunner of an Apache helicopter has a similar thing, but it only
covers one eye and is mounted on his helmet.

Charles Lindberg had a periscope in the Spirit of Saint Louis to have some
sort of view of what was in front of the plane.

You can get a HUD in some luxury cars like BMW and Aston Martin, some just
shows instrument readings and some of the latest models interacts with a
UV/IR headlight showing obstacles normally invisible to the human eye in the
night.
