I see a photo of a magazine spread with lots of Asian characters and a
couple of photos.
My Japanese is badly rusty but it says something like "all letter(?)
interview: Kojima speaks about (his) newest MGS production."
So, yeah, new MGS game. Playing as Big Boss would neatly side-step the
issue of MGS4 being the last game with Solid Snake in it ;)

It's not broken. It's...advanced.
Maybe we're going to be stuck playing Raiden again, although I imagine
it will be more interesting to play bad ass Raiden than effeminate
Raiden.
I think the boss battle involves hiding in a carboard box in the
middle of a jungle. I mean I see cardboard boxes in the jungle all the
time.
I'm willing to go on record as saying I have no problem with Raiden in
either form.
And to get to the original post, despite the way it's beginning to look
the next MGS game with Big Boss in the lead is anything but announced.
Although given who the OP is that's not really anything new.

He was really hateable in MGS2, although I think that's as much down to
having Rose in it as Raiden himself.

I'm pretty sure using the cardboard box or the oil barrel in
inappropriate settings elicits suspicion from the enemies in the
latest game. I would hope that this trend continues into the next
one...
I'm not a fan of the whole glam rock look for him, but I think he
probably was hated on unfairly to a degree. Much of the hate stemmed
from people's dismay that they were playing a new character when even
the gameplay trailers showed Solid Snake through some visual trickery
on the part of Kojima's team.

I'm pretty bored of listening to people dismiss the game entirely based on
ththeir supposed hatred of Raiden (although the post-MGS3 promo videos
that stemmed from this were actually pretty good) as if the game has
absolutely no merits whatsoever. It's the same case with games like PoP:
Warrior Within and Zelda: Wind Waker, people hating the art direction to
the extent that they can't see how good the rest of the game is.
The game wasn't bad but I imagine that it didn't improve things enough
for many people to overlook the fact that a) they weren't playing the
protagonist they loved and b) the developers outright lied about this.
It was the first MGS2 game I played and got me interested enough to
check out the GameCube remake of the first game. The story wasn't
great and Raiden was annoying as a character but the overall gameplay
was decent.
I think it's tough, though, for people to look past aspects of the
game that are so in-your-face. If you can't empathize or at least
accept the character you're playing, it makes it tough to really get
into a game. If you're hating the story, it's tough to immerse
yourself in the experience.
Think about it... let's say someone comes out with the best first-
person game engine ever and they put together some awesome level
designs, some kick-ass gameplay, etc. Then, let's say they decide to
use the Strawberry Shortcake license and craft some asinine story
about how she's trying to save our world from stale fruit-based baked
goods. Would you blame people for not being able to see the merits of
the game? :-)

Again, it's tough for people to get into a game when the main
character is such a douche.

Too kiddie looking. Plus, a lot of vented frustration over having
waited for a sequel to Ocarina and Mask with their graphical
advancements for their time and ending up playing a game that took a
step back as far as graphical realism.
Great game, but I can see how older gamers would not like it. Even I,
someone who loved the game as it was, was ready to bust a nut at the
possibilities so cruelly hinted at in EGM's April Fool's issue years
back.
Its the 360 metal gear titled Rising and you play as Raiden , no Solid
snake.
Ya..most anti-climatic game announcement so far.
