I have 2 versions of Mech..... Mechwarrior2 31st Century Combat Pentium
edition and Mechwarrior2 Mercenaries. I want to play modem to modem
with my buddy. Can I do it with these 2 versions? Mech2 has the
netmech options, Mercenaries doesn't appear to show that option but
refers to Mecrnet in the documentation.

In short is it possible to play over modem using these 2 versions or do
I need to buy/download another version? If it is possible... how do I
set up Mercenaries???

If you can help let me know.

I had something of a similiar problem. I bought the version of MW2
that came bundled with Mercenaries and raved about it to a friend. He
went out and bought the version of MW2 that came with Ghost Bears clan
(BattlePack edition). We thought that we were going to have fun
playng against each other over a modem connection, but turns out that
we have different versions of NetMech, which are not compatable.

However, Activision has made available on their website the latest
version of NetMech that comes with their titanium edtion of MW2. If I
read this right, it is a complete, standalone program. If you both
download and install this program, you should be able to get online
together.

Yes, you WILL be able to play it as long as ONE of you has the CD in order
to host a game..(silly isn't it), as well, the person without the CD will
not be able to build new mechs without some sort of external program such as
txt2mek and mek2txt, or the sort. I am uncertain whether the Pentium Edition
CD will enable you to run the Titanium Netmech, however.

I will endeavor to find an answer for you though...hopefully very quickly

Done a bit of experimentation. I have both the battlepack MW2, and the old
DOS 1.0 Version of MW2 upgraded with the 1.1 patch. I have only the original
version installed, yet it will still allow me to host the game using the
battlepack version.

Don't know about the Titanium version, but it might work..

I appreciate you looking into this. I guess I'm not sure why they are
labeling this as a "stand alone" program and a "demo", if it requires
the CD to make much use of it.

From Activision's website:
> This is a stand alone version of the multi-player versions of the
> MechWarrior 2: The Titanium Trilogy (MercNet and NetMech). This is
> not a patch, and does not require the full version of the game to

Come to think of it, I guess that is what a demo is suppose to do.
Give you limited access to the game, so you'll want to go out and buy
it after seeing how great it is. I assume that a person using this
downloaded version of NetMech and MercNet could get on line with the
activision servers and paricipate in some multiplayer action, though
without the ability to customize Mechs or host the game. However, two
people with this downloaded version of NetMech would still not be able
to connect via modem, unless one of them has the titanium CD.

Are you using the DOS version of the game and NetMech? I figured that
this might be one way to work around with the incompatibility of MW2
Battlepack and MW2 (vers. 1.1) Win95/DOS. Use the DOS version of the
game, if both CD's have that onboard. I know the non-battlepack
version includes the DOS version of the game and NetMech, as well as
the Win95 versions. Does the battlepack version also come with the
DOS versions?

Why dont you just both go download the still free Netmech Dos? If you are
looking to play on the Internet, netmech dos is used by at leat 80% of the
players out here. I used to have Win95 Mech (CD), and had to download
netmech dos to play with the others. It seems to be the same for a lot of
people.

Get Netmech dos free download, sign up to a clan and join the best league
(not to mention free server software to play). No need to pay $20 to play
Netmech online when you can get everything free.
