A second trigger on the Missile Launcher which will fire fifty tiny

two big ones. I've got it lying around somewhere. It's a lot of fun to

How about something that stuns the alien rather than killing it?
I dont know much about physics models etc.
No-reason
Hmm, there's an idea! Here's a possible way, but is requires an alien
getting plastered to the wall(or flying through the air):
1. Make an alien with an external velocity scale ridiculously high(2
or 3 or 10 although it could easily stick one right through a wall.)
2. Choose the shot to stun the alien.
3. Look at its damage type.
4. Set it to 1 with a random of zero.
5. Make the marine immune to that damage type.
6. Plaster some bastards!
opt. Give the shot a speed of zero and make it affected by half gravity.
>No-reason
-----------------------------
Would this work?- In the alien's shapes file, under sequences, set the
"flinch" or "hit" ticks up to 360 or something--it should just stand
there paralyzed for 10 seconds. If it doesn't have a "flinch" sequence,
create one by using the "stationary" pose.

OK, I'll respond to my own post...
@30 ticks/second, 360 ticks would obviously be 12 seconds.
I just wonder if the Marathon engine would get bogged down (or the stack
would crash) trying to countdown all the paralyzed aliens?
>>opt. Give the shot a speed of zero and make it affected by half gravity.<<
Then, it would stay in one place. :^) What are you making, stun-mines?

Yes, it would.... but..... everything would stun them. Every gun, and missle,
and all of that.

How about a gas canister you could throw that would either emit smoke so
the monsters couldn't see you or it emitted a gas that would temporally
put them to sleep. Land mines would be a good strategy weapon. A
garrote would add the personal touch. Of course being able to call in a
fire mission with artillery would rock.

Devon's point is that what you're describing is basically the same as what

It could be possible. You would have to tweak the physics quite a bit so
that the Marathon 1 engine would choke on it. Get a weapon that fires
projectiles (Assault Rifle, for example), change the Theta error to zero.
Make it so that the projectiles travel at a very slow speed (0.1), and do
very little damage (0 if that's possible). Keep the weapon on automatic.
Crank up the assault rifle's ammo to 104 (52 isn't enough), then save. Get
into the game and try it on aliens that temporarily "freeze" after getting
hit by projectiles. Let fly at close range and step back. The vic...
er... guinea pig would keep getting hit by the projectile shots while you
switch to something more destructive and blow it out of the sky - uh -
space.
I never really tried this, I'm just piecing together the experience from
the game and my experience (?) with tweaking the weapons physics.

You could take a tip from my Great Great Uncle Angus McCat, a noble Scott
warrior who, after a battle, would use a
hand ax to dig the still smoking expended projectiles out of his slain
enemy's bodies. He would melt them down and
recast new bullets from them. During the lead shortage of the "Haggus Wars"
he would kick their teeth out and melt
down their fillings. The point being, be creative.
If you have the room, run circles around your enemy. He cannot lead his
shots and he doesn't give a pulled finger if one
of his own men is in his sights when he is firing at you. Learn to fight
with your fists. You can take out any Hunter,
Compiler, Yeti or Drone with your fists without taking damage. You will want
to back off of a Blue "Mother of All
Hunters" when you think they have had a lot of punishment because they die
only a "Hard Death" meaning he will
explode and kill you right back. The vindictive so and so. If you run up
under the Jug you can polish their knobs while
they are unable to shoot you. Same thing with Hunters though, hard death, so
be careful. The fighters can easily be
duked out, just keep moving and circling them. Float like a butterfly, sting
like a bee. You would want to back off of a
Trooper or an Enforcer though, burn up your ammo on these guys, you have
saved tons of it from fist fighting and
making them kill each other. A Cyborg is doable but I suggest having a
powerup handy so you can powder your nose
when needed. If there are BOBs helping you, let them do as much damage to
the Beasties as they can and if you are
playing a lower difficulty level, kill the remaining BOB's for their ammo.
Hey, what are you guys looking at me like that
for??? Anyone for a game of co-op? :-)
Some weapons are more effective on certain monsters than other weapons. You
can save a lot of ammo by using the
appropriate weapon. Anything mechanized is greatly damaged with the Fusion
Pistol. Hunters, Drones, Jugs and
Compilers. The TOZT has no effect on Hunters, Compilers or Lava Yetis (they
are the ones that throw fire balls instead
of muck). Fleshy things are affected more by projectile and shrapnel
weapons.
Some weapons do not work in a vacuum. The Fusion Pistol, Magnum Pistols,
(Shotguns?), Fists, and the SMG will
work in a vacuum, conserve this ammo if you know of vacuum levels ahead. The
SMG and your fists are the only thing
that works under medium (lava and water and goo and sewage and whiskey).
Use the appropriate accuracy. Don't bother shooting at something too far
away with an inaccurate weapon like the Battle
Rifle or the Shotguns. You almost have to run up and plant the muzzle of the
Battle Rifle into the chest of a monster to
get maximum damage done. The exception to this rule is to be faced with so
many dang monsters that no matter where
you shoot one of them will take damage from each shot and when they are
taking damage they cannot shoot back, unlike
you. For long shots choose an accurate weapon depending on the power you
need, Magnum and Fusion pistols, Alien
Weapon, Grenades, and SPNKR are accurate at long range. A Shotgun blast, 2nd
trigger Fusion Pistol, Grenades,
SPNKR and Alien weapon will trigger a remote switch, but a single puff of the
Alien Weapon will expend the least
amount of firepower to do the same job.
I'm sure I left some things out, I always do, but if you heed these
instructions, you will be able to conserve all the ammo
you need to play the game without problems. Good luck.
I know these are fightin' words but, you are a gentleman and a scholar,

Here's another idea, but it's more of an enemy that a weapon.
Make a tiny Cyborg and scale down its height and radius appropriately.
Give him 6000 hit points.
Remove his long-range shot and change short-range to a fist punch.
Give him a speed of five. Change his evternal velocity scale to 1.5.
Give yourself an infinite supply of these guys.
Make him friends with everyone else and and enemy to you.
That'll keep you moving rather than just sitting around. And if he
does manage to back you into a corner, a single grenade should blow his
ass out of the way. You might also give him a nuclear hard death and a
contrail just for fun.

John,
Heyyyy... who are you calling... uh, whatever you called me?!? I knew I
would leave some stuff out.
If you can position yourself correctly, a Cyborg or a Trooper will suicide
against a wall from launching grenades at you. You must be at a far
enough distance that they will grenade you as opposed to flaming or
shooting at you and they must be activated and see you. They don't seem
to notice there is a column or wall in front of them. Once you have their
attention just wiggling in place will infuriate them, check you motion
detector. If there is a green square in the center and they are activated
they can see you.
Funnel their flow of bodies through a narrow constriction like a doorway
or a hallway and they will line up for you exactly in the center of the
poly for you to fire at, pre-aimed, and not miss a shot. This also will
help you save ammo.
Knowing that a monster will run from the center of one poly to the center
of the next poly helps you to line up your shots and anticipate his
movements.
Try to save your explosive schrapnel weapons (SPNKR rockets and Battle
Rifle grenades) for GROUPS of monsters. You can save a lot of ammo by
having the monster share the damage of a single rocket. If you aim at the
floor by their feet or at a wall just behind them you will not waste ammo
from missing your shot.
What am I leaving out?
>>pardon me for asking, but what exactly do you intend to do with all that
leftover ammo once all the creatures are dead? eat it?<<
Of course, silly buns. What else would one do with extra ammo? :^P

are you sure he's not pulling our collective leg? it seems impossible

> pardon me for asking, but what exactly do you intend to do with all that

Dunno about him, but I use leftover ammo as a way to keep score.
Set the difficulty to Total Carnage, so you can pick up all the ammo you
come to. Then, at the end of the game, use a stopwatch to time how long it
takes to fire it all off, firing as rapidly as possible. For weapons with
two fire buttons, you have to hold down both at the same time (except for
Fusion Pistol). That time is your score.
If they take away your ammo part way through the game (like at the end of
Begging for Mercy in M2), record that time and add it to the final score.
My "score" for M2 is well over an hour.
No fair using the loops like the Electric Sheep loops in MI to build up
extra ammo. Only one pass through each level.
Even when I'm not playing Total Carnage, I derive a certain pleasure from
wandering the empty level after I've killed everything, gloating over all
the ammo and pickups that I didn't need to use.
OK, I'm weird. But it's a game, and it's perfectly OK to turn a game into a
game. You get your kicks your way, I'll get mine my way.

Yeah yeah yeah. You got it. ;^)
Warloque is indeed a hoax. An early april fools joke of sorts...
So yes, I'm the one that formulated all of Warloque's replies.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that I pissed a lot of people off, but I've had my share
of guilt by now, and I don't expect not to hear the end of it any time soon....
no, actually, I did feel pretty bad duping all of these people here. Especially
when Gary made that long post. I beat myself up then. But still, Gary, your
efforts were not futile. I'm sure many people here might have learned
something, and future generations might benefit. Or something.
Anyway, I was going to "come out of the booth" sometime and tell the truth and
all, before it got too out of hand. Besides.... it's not very easy to sound
authentically stupid for an extended amount of time. So to speak...
Well, if you're wondering why I did it, I just thought back a little while to
when everybody was whining that we didn't have a moron like PiRaTe around
anymore. And then the concept of AGM Weekly Sucker came up, and the idea of
pretending to be a complete waste of good carbon. Etc.
So it was just an easy matter to boot up News Watcher, change a few addresses
and my .sig, and post with my ISP. (If you played close enough attention, you'd
see that Warloque's posts came from CET. And anybody whom I've sent a file to
should know that I'm also known as ebe...@cet.com. ;^))
Anyway. Enough about that... I hope there aren't any hard feelings or anything.
It wasn't ever intended in any malicious way. I hope it won't be taken as
such....

You're right, Gabe--Just kick back. Nobody's going to give a damn what
you did in high school from now on--it's from Swathmahr on that counts.

Just pull out forge, start making polys... then start fixing them... then
find out where they lead to, and add from there... before you know it, you
have a map, and the block is gone.

You can soften up a Mother Of All Hunters with your fists, by running right
up to him and punching him from close range. He can't shoot back as long as
you keep hitting him.
This works on all hunters, and can be used to kill any of them, but a MOAH
will always explode when it dies, even if you use your fists. (All other
hunters will just sort of crumple.) So, count your blows.
On Normal difficulty, a MOAH will take about 220 standing punches. Adjust
for how much damage you think they've taken before you get to them. (You
generally have to kill them last if they're in a group, and their
companions may have hit them a few times.) So, punch them until you think
they're nearly dead, then beat a hasty retreat and finish them off with
just one or two shots from something a little more long-range. Takes a lot
less ammo to kill them that way. (If you have a pattern buffer handy, you
can practice until you've got them down to one last fist blow. Then a
single bullet of whatever ammo you have the most of is all you need.)
Same thing works with Juggernauts, of course.
When counting fist punches, remember not to make the first one a running
hit, or adjust the count if it is.
When killing Cyborgs with your fists, make repeated running hits until you
think they're just about to go. Then, for the final few punches, run up to
them (without punching), and tap them with your fist as you back away.
Doesn't do as much damage per punch, but when you do finally deliver the
killing blow, you'll be far enough away from the explosion to avoid taking
damage. You can kill even the meanest of Cyborgs with your fists this way,
and come away totally unscathed.
An Enforcer will stay put once it starts shooting at you. You can turn this
against it if you have something you can hide behind, because it means you
can aim even when you can't see it. Step out from behind your shield and
verify that you're aimed right. If not, duck under cover without shooting
and adjust your aim. When you're sure you've got him targeted, hit him. No
missed shots. (So nice of him to stand motionless through all this.)
On levels with Enforcers, your most plentiful ammo is usually all those
alien weapons (assuming you aren't wasting them by burning or exploding the
Enforcers). You don't want to kill an Enforcer with an alien weapon, but
you can soften him up with one. For example, on Normal, a purple Enforcer
can survive 6 but not 7 hits with an alien weapon. So hit him 6 times, then
switch to magnum or fusion pistol for the coup de grace.
If an Enforcer happens to take a stand in a place that's not to your
liking, you can make it start patrolling again by moving well away from its
line of sight. When you return, it'll be moving again, and may start
shooting from a more favorable (to you) position.
Enforcers and Hunters often team up to shoot at you from vantage point.
They don't work well together, though. If you draw their fire, the Enforcer
will stand in one place and shoot, but the Hunter will continue to pace
back and forth. This often brings the Hunter in front of the Enforcer,
where he takes damage from friendly fire. (But Hunters are so kindhearted
that they never take offense, and never shoot back. More's the pity.)
Eventually, the Hunter will be dead, without you firing a shot. Don't
tackle the Enforcer until then.
Hunters do sometimes duke it out with Cyborgs, though. A Greater Cyborg
doesn't seem to realize that the Hunter is immune to flame, so the Hunter
will always win. Which is good, because it's easier to kill a Hunter than a
Cyborg with your fists.
Monsters with tracking weapons are lots of fun. With practice, you can
guide their missles into their companions. I get a lot of satisfaction from
that. (Of course, all the monsters occasionally hit their friends by
accident, something I'm sure you're already putting to great advantage. But
the real joy is from AIMING their shots into their friends.)
One curious thing about that, though. If you have a bunch of S'pht shooting
target-seeking fireballs, I can often aim the fireball from one S'pht into
another, but I've never been able to make a S'pht hit himself. The fireball
seems to go right through him, even when it seems I've lined it up just
right. Are S'pht immune to their own fireballs?
My far and away favorite weapon is the door. You can kill lots of critters
with doors, and it doesn't take any ammo.
A reasonably fast door can take out a Trooper or a Cyborg. You can stand
far enough away from the door that they use their grenades against you, but
still be just barely close enough to be able to close the door every time
they try to open it. Eventually, they'll take themselves out, along with
any of their softer companions that are foolish enough to be standing
around.
A thin door will let a fist punch through. Stand with your nose right up
against one side of a door, and let them come up to the door on the other
side. Close the door every time they try to open it, and keep your fists
punching. It's a standing punch, so it doesn't do much damage, but that's
more than they're doing to you. Eventually, you'll hear one die, and
another will take his place. When they're all gone, step through the door
and over the pile of smoking entrails.
Of course, you have to hit the door where they are, and you can't see them,
so you have to listen. Hunters and S'pht make the familiar sound when you
punch them through the door. But soft critters, like Fighters and Troopers,
make no sound at all. That's good enough, though, because it means you
AREN'T hearing the sound your fist normally makes against a wall or door.
The door doesn't need to look like a door, of course. In the final room of
Wiping Away The Dirt And Glue, you can kill all the baddies behind the wall
before you even open it. Remember, all's fair in love and war. There's no
percentage in giving the enemy a fair chance if you don't have to.

Yeah, but it's a new zit and boy is she a beaut!! I even added a bucket to
drain into, thereby enhansing the pliers-and-zit joke technology. I'm not just
sitting here on my butt-ocks boy, I am working hard to squeeze the last drop

But of course, you _can_ suffer splash damage from explosive weapons that

I wander the empty level after I've killed all the baddies, gloating over
all the ammo I didn't pick up. Sort of like Uncle Scrooge playing in his
money bin with all the money he's never going to spend. I go to as great
lengths to save one bullet as Scrooge does to save one dime.
Playing Normal, I think I did Dirt and Glue using one shotgun shell, two or
three alien weapons, and part of a fusion battery. (But that's kind of
unfair, since I didn't kill everybody. There is one MOAH still wandering
around in the garden on the east edge of the map, where I can't get to him.
I killed everybody else, though, including the Cyborg that was in that same
garden.)
I didn't pick up any of the shields, since I still had a smidgen over
double shields at the end. (I ended Descending Spiral with triple shields,
and the only damage I took in Dirt and Glue was the lava bath, which I got
through with just under one shield of damage. I could have taken less
damage by grenade hopping, but then I'd have had to use a grenade, and once
you use one you might as well use the full clip.)
And then they take it all away when you leave the level. Oh well...

Normal -- bah. Impress me by playing it on Total Carnage and wasting

Toe-t-all Car-n-age. After all these years of M-Time, why wuss around in a
Moo scenario using OEM enemies on anything less? We remain unimpressed.
Start all over. Do it again.

Is it just me, or does it seem odd that those monsters are called Mother of All
Hunters (or cyborgs) but people tend to say "it's wandering around" or "he's
shooting at me" and stuff like that? Shouldn't be something like "She's trying
to fry me" or "I blew her head off" or something to that effect?
The Marathon engine does not allow teleportation weapons, but that
would be an interesting idea.
... It would be nice to have big guns like in "Men In Black." ...
Getting their appearance is no problem; it's simply a matter of
artistry.

The previous posting had mentioned teleportation weapons.
Here are some more possibilities:
* Stun weapons
Duke Nukem has its freezer gun, and Myth, the Fallen Lords has
"pus packets" that stun those nearby when broken.
* Mines
These can either be triggered by either something moving close or
by their layer. Duke Nukem's pipebombs are an example of the latter; the
first "fire" tosses one and the second "fire" detonates it.
* Trip bombs
Duke Nukem has those. It will make a laser beam, and crossing it
will explode the bomb.
Make a shot, like a grenade, have a speed of zero, or as close to zero as you
can get it. Make sure it isn't affected by gravity. Make it explosive. Set the
size of the shot as big as the area you want the "Proximity" to be.
Fire it and run. The first sucker to wander nearby will get blasted.
This, of course, depends on the shot not affecting its creator. If it does,
then as soon as you create it it will blow up and kill you. It does mean, that
if you lay the mine when you're right next to something, you'll get toasted
too.
> This, of course, depends on the shot not affecting its creator. If it does,
> then as soon as you create it it will blow up and kill you. It does mean, that

No shots affect their creator. They start _within_ his column, so they
have to work this way to keep from damaging you just as you fire them.
The problems with your proximity mine, Svy, are these: 1) any kind of
mines eventually overload the engine, meaning that no one can fire any
shots till somebody blows up the mines that are floating around; 2) if
there's someone standing close behind or to the side of the player firing
the mine originally, they'll be in the proximity and blow the mine up
before it gets anywhere.
Actually, neither of those are exactly crippling (the mines, presuming you
drop them in much-frequented places, won't last very long, and if you run
around dropping armed mines with enemies nearby you're just stupid
anyway).
>>Actually, neither of those are exactly crippling (the mines, presuming you
drop them in much-frequented places, won't last very long, and if you run

True. (Actually, I mentioned that second problem in my post.)
Although they'd still accomplish the task: Make something that blows up with
someone comes near.
