You have to enable the screenshot interrupt by pressing Shift-5 during
play, and the you can take a snapshot by pressing Command-shift-3. The
game will be less responsive on slower machines. To disable
screnshotting, press shift-5 again.

David,
Slow the film using the bracket keys during playback ---> {[ ]} <---

Left bracket slows, right bracket speds up playback.

Slow your film to a crawl at the point of image snapping - do the
"Shift-5" - to enable finder - then "Cmnd-Shift-3" to take the snapshot.
Take dozens of pictures, and then pick the best one when you're finished.

Hope this helps,

much has been said about command shift this and option yomama that.
Fan all that nonsense. Get Snapz from ambrosia software and let it do the
work for you. you can download the shareware from their site.

Dunno why this should be nonsense, it ever worked for me, and still
does...., so what gives!?

(Shift-5 tells Marathon to give some time to the system)

Another thing to do is take your snapshots from a film of the game (replay
last film). Then you can slow down playback, even to a complete stop, when
you approach the point you want to take the screenshot. You also don't
have to worry about getting plastered by aliens while you're doing it.

I used snapz - and it worked like a charm for a while. But it also
caused a massive freeze on my system which resulted in me ditching it
and a few other possible culprits - all that is to say this: choose your
hotkeys VERY carefully when configuring snapz

Make sure you use Snapz V1.0. Other versions can cause problems, email me if
you want it and I can send it to you.
