Is anyone else playing this? The original game had kind of run its
course with me a while back, but I fired this up a few days ago on a
whim and am utterly addicted. Right now I'm still struggling to get
through the third screen on the first level; can't quite get the last
rivet before losing my last man.

Really great update IMHO, and well worth a look.

thanks. I never noticed this one.

It took me three game starts before I could finish the first level,
and then didn't have enough lives to get past the 2nd stage (I've
never been good at this game).

So I've not yet seen the third stage. but hope to give it more tries
again soon.

The birds come in certain patterns. After a certain number of birds went
through there is a larger gap.

What might help, especially in later levels, is when you are hanging on
the rope on top to slide down to its end, just to not fall down. Then
reach out to the left (holding on to the rope with the right hand while
having the left in the air). Wait for the large gap and push the joystick
to the left. You fall on the platform but are closer to the left
rope. Just one jump is needed now.

FYI: He's not talking about Donkey Kong Jr (which it sounds like you are :)
Donkey Kong II (also called D2K) is a daughterboard upgrade to a DK. You
plug in the daughter board into the Z80 slot, and place the Z80 on the new board.
It allows you to play the original DK, and a new version (D2K) with 4 new levels,
along with the original 4 levels (each with some modification). A couple of the new
levels are very tricky (wait till you guys get to the 7th board, 175M, called "the
Incinerator") Another nice feature of the upgrade is it saves high scores, and also
gives you the option of free play (which the original DK didin't)

Made it that far tonight and am currently stuck on it. Some serious
effort was put into the level design in this game.

One thing I've noticed is that moves are very timing-dependent overall,
definitely more so than the original. Oh, and the updated version of
the elevators level is pretty sweet.

I finally got past the fourth screen. I didn't get to the first
ladder with four lives in screen five. ugh!
