I just passed on an original Gal's Panic machine yesterday.
Despite the promise of seeing cartoonish naked chicks, the
game is just so damn difficult that it's not very fun to play for
long.

The game is not difficult. I think it's funny when people who suck say a
game is too difficult rather than admitting they suck.
You just have to learn the tricks. There are certain boards where you can
clear them and get a perfect clear in a matter of seconds. Besides, you get
unlimited continues.
I will admit that the second level fire bouncy guy is a little bitch.

Rather presumptious and juvenile of you to assume that someone
sucks, don't you think? I've been playing video games since there
were video games. I've got a pretty good handle on my abilities, and
know when they're lacking and am not at all afraid to admit it. Gals
Panic is just plain tough.

I don't consider someone who's found "tricks" to beat a game to
be any good at it. I can teach a seven year old kid the patterns to
Pac-Man. Does that mean he's any good at it? There's a fine line
here.

[ PRoToCoL ]
No. It's challenging. I'm not sure what you are comparing it to, but it's
not an especially difficult game, in fact it's a game in which a person can go
quite far on one credit. Maybe you should practice it a bit more? It's just a
matter of learning the way the game works. There are things you can't do, for
example claiming space on the sillouhette too early will often cost you points
on the meter.
Sorry, but I come from a time when people actually spent time learning how
to get good at a game, instead of expecting to beat it on their first try
without dying as you apparently expect to do...
> I don't consider someone who's found "tricks" to beat a game to

I don't mean codes and cheats. I'm talking about strategies. It IS a
puzzle game, and without these strategies there would be no game. Moving your
cursor around aimlessly does not make you a "non-cheater" or a manlier player
in Gal's Panic. It just makes you die.
>I can teach a seven year old kid the patterns to
>Pac-Man. Does that mean he's any good at it?
The thing is, Gal's Panic has a random element. The way the damn things
bounce isn't the same over and over.
Who cares ?!

You're just mellowing in your old age!
So now it's "challenging"? "Tough" "Difficult" "Challenging" What's

Hardly. I'd be willing to bet that I'm as old if not older than you. I
was
alive and pumping quarters back when games had no hidden cheats and
many didn't even let you continue. I also went through a long Atari
Computer
game pirate stage where I had literally hundreds and hundreds of games that
I learned to play with no instructions whatsoever. I can handle figureing
out
a game.
This one's tough. Or challenging. Or whatever you want to call it.

Try this: find a non-sillouette part of the board, and set up a partial
box. Then wait for the Qix to find its way inside. Then close the box off. 100%
clear! Or set up the box and claim space outside the trap in order to force the
Qix inside. You can get 100% on 90% of the boards if you are patient. Don't
worry about your health meter, it's worth it to lose points in order to force
the Qix into the trap. Also don't kill your trap just because a burger or
something shows up. Health is really not that big an issue in this game.
If you don't care about 100% clear, you can use the above strategy 100%
of the time just to "beat" the board. Though you might as well go for 100%
clear.
If you don't want to use the trap method, a good idea is to circle around
claiming the non-sillouhette parts of the board in order to rake up your health
meter. When the board gets small and crowded, don't stay in one place waiting
for the Sparx to give you a chance. Instead, move around, claiming little bits
at a time. They will have a harder time tracking you if you shift to different
areas of the board. If you stay in one spot they will just stick to you like
glue.
Ignore the little spaceship item. It's useless and short-lived, and not
worth the risk unless it's right where you can grab it with no problems.
In general, don't worry about health, because if the girl transforms, you
can simply grab one of the cherubs and put it right back to normal no sweat.
Also, burgers tend to appear right after you transform the girl. Sometimes you
can grab the burger and cherub in one go, getting 12 health points and ending
up better off than you did before the transformation. The only time a
transformation will kill you is if the board area left is very small, and in
trying to grab the cherub, you finish the level. Even if you grabbed the cherub
on your last move, It won't count it's points. Instead, it'll end the level
with the sheep or whatever.
The game seems hard at first, but it's actually very simple and once you
know what's going on, you should be able to beat all the girls with 4 credits
or less. Using a joystick, I can beat all the girls with 3 credits (that's two
continues). Using the arrow keys, I can usually do it with 4. Sometimes I have
a "magic game" where I either don't continue or have to continue just once.
It's always that second level firey bitch that gets me! He makes cheap homing
attacks.

I'm told there's an arcade here in Copenhagen that has it. "Professor
Olsen's Spilleland" (Gameland) in the Scala mall, no less. The entry fee is
£3, but then you get a free soda and a handfull of tokens.. not bad! I'm
going there with a friend next week - should be good fun.. I've also heard
they have Metal Slug II in there ;-)
BTW Mark, remember to send some pictures of yourself to Andreas Kolbach!
-Sune
LOL, I will, but I'll have to re-inforce the camera lens...;-) Let me know
what the arcade is like!
Mark
He he, Sure! BTW, last week i went to Tivoli to hear some friends play, and
afterwards we went to the arcades they have there. They had a Operation Wolf
tucked away in a corner, the sit-down version of Outrun (and also the stand
up version that someone had left two credits in...yes! ;-)), Terminator II
and Mortal Kombat II. The rest of the games were modern, HUGE, linked Racing
games, Time Crisis style shooting games and fighting games. Crazy Taxi by
Sega looked very c00l, didn't play it though, but i tried a Water Scooter
racing game were you sat on a "real" Water Scooter (what's the proper name
for one of these things anyway :-) with hydraulics that made it move and
shake so forcefully that i nearly fell off! You could lean the "bike" to one
side and it would turn harder. That was a rush!!
Will you tell me about the Arcade you go to at Southend-On-Sea?
-Sune
Sune, when you go to Professor Olsens, you'll find Gals Panic just 2 meters from Namco Classic Collection Vol.2 and
Bubble Bobble. Whoever manages Professor Olsen must have some fond memories of the older games. -And they are cheap;
one credit in the new release games cost 10 Dkr. -Gals Panic, Namco Classic coll.2 and Bubble Bobble cost 5 Dkr for 2
credits. They also have a version of Bomberman in that corner.
Do give the Pacman Special edition a go, it's cool (even though the monitor is almost totally wasted).
Tivoli used to have Atari Pacman, Original B/W Sea Wolf with periscope (from the early '70's). -They disappeared about 5
years ago. Anyway many of their machines are now a bit run down imho. I felt sad at the disappearance of Pacman (I was
only later that I found Namco Classic 2 at Olsens).
Cheers

Mange tak, hr. ræv :-)
Det er godt at se der stadig er nogle af de gamle spil tilbage her i byen.

Pity our footie team's so crap these days though. :(
BTW, haven't visited those arcades in yonks personally! Had a go at
some rally driving game whilst in the Kursaal bar boozing a couple of
months back (they have an arcade you can go into whilst also
drinking/dancing the night away). Unfortunately a female friend of mine
beat me, so it must have been a crap game and far too easy to drive. :)

Mark,
which arcade still has some older machines in. I haven't been back to
southend for a while but I seem to remember spending much of my time/money
in Sunspot and Mr B's probable because I was too lazy to walk any further
down the seafront. There used to be a playchoice and a versus on the pier
but then it burnt down for the 20th time.
I'm in Copenhagen at the end of august too so little does my girlfriend know
what she's in store for when I suggest we go to the mall :)

The arcade in Southend-on-sea that has the old machines is the one next to
Wendys burger bar under the peir itself. Also there's one opposite that has
Outrun upright for 10p. Practising on MAME does not make it easier in the
arcade...
