speed up 2d ops on gf3 ?

How can I increase the 2d speed of a gf3/ti500, asus agpv8200 deluxe..
everything is great for 3d. but for some older legacy gaming, it runs at
1/2 speed of a riva-128zx or the old rendition v1000!!
I plugged in a riva-128zx into the same system and saw a doubling of 2d
framerate in microsoft space simulator to 23fps vs 11fps. a rendition
v1000 gave me double and a handfull more @ 26fps. I am running currently
with a p3/850, abit bx6r2 mobo, 1gb ram. Remember these are 2d dos
programs and they totally ignore anything with 3d rendering.
Its just ms space sim and some classic arcade emulators that seem a
little slow. my win98 apps are just fine as are all 3d games both d3d +
ogl .. I've always had nvidia cards and with each iteration from the
riva-128 - tnt1 - tnt2 - gf2 - gf3 , the 2d in dos has slowed down.
I *think* the vesa (old standard) implementation either in the gf3/ti500
or the asus video bios is lacking in features or is piss poor. And what
I need is a good vesa patch or tsr for vbe 2.0 or vbe 3.0 ..

download fastvid, and run the program " Vspeed"
report the speed from your linear framebuffer and from banked VGA.
Then, install fastvid (will take a reboot, you have to load it in your
autoexec ), then report back the new scores.

and I will send it to you directly. Fastvid is easily attainable, but
Vspeed isn't..... there are actually several utilities that have this
name :(

speed, but I'm not seeing anything before or after fastvid. If I plug my
riva-128(pci) back in and run fastvid I get really huge increases in 2d
performance. the gf3 does nothing. :(

Just realized something.
1) have you bothered trying vspeed in windows? I bet you will see a
huge difference in speed.
2) Are you running emm386? Fastvid can't access the LFB for some
reason with emm386......maybe umbpci might be a better choice if you
need an upper memory manager).
