I love this game. To me, it encompasses everything that is retro-gaming,
from the simple, yet great gameplay, right down to the scary robot
voice. And, apparently, it was so frightening that two people died from
playing it.

IMHO, Even if you already know the game, this review is still worth
reading.

I don't know - but this what the rewiev says:

"..............in 1981, when 19-year-old Jeff Dailey died of a heart
attack after an intense Berzerk session. The following year, an
18-year-old named Peter Burkowski suffered a fatal coronary after
attaining two Berzerk high scores in succession."

Luckily, at 28 i seem to fall outside of the statistics.. ;-)

I've had two games over the years scare me so bad I dropped the controller:

1. Atari 2600 - Haunted House. When a ghost comes right through the door
when you come through it and it had the loud clap of thunder.

2. Atari Jaguar - Aliens Vs Preditor. When the Face Hugger appeared right
up on the screen the first time hugging your head! damn that scarred the
piss out of me!

The only game to give me nightmares: Max Payne - If you've played this
game, you probably know the section I mean.

Of all scary games, System Shock II is the game that scared me the most.
It scared me so much that i had to put it down for a while....I highly
recommend this game, it is VERY intense.

Friday the 13th on the C64 was pretty scary as well back in
1980-something (it had the most horrifying, spine-chilling digitized
scream effect when Freddy killed someone, somewhere), as was Alien vs.
Predator on the PC. The soundtrack and EAX effects made it a pretty
f*****g intense gaming experience (dude)!

Nah. Not my kind of sounds, to be honest with ya....
I do have the superb and supposedly R@RE 12 inch "Humanoid" by Stakker

It was a hit around the same time as WAX had a hit with "Building a
bridge to your heart".....LOL

It is built around Bezerk samples, and was released sometime between '86
and '88.

Try looking for it on some P2P service or something, i remember
downloading it because i was too lazy to hook up my record player to my

i think you will not like this a little less.....err.. ö_Ö

It is friday the 13th and it is Jason (though not much more than 8
pixels in hight). I played that a bit during my time at a bording school.
My most scary game from the ancient past is The Uninvited (Amiga
version). I know my brother will probably point to Alien (Argus Press
Software, 1984) as the most scary game of it's time;
http://www.c64unlimited.net/games/a/alien_argus_press/alien_argus_press.h
tm I still have the original tape and the cassette cover :)
Funny enough, I stopped playing Silent Hill on Psx for a period, as it
was a bit scary, imho.

Humanoid were Future Sound of London before they went all ambient/breakbeat
and if you like that 'old skool' sound you should check out the stuff they
recorded as

Indo Tribe (especially Owl and Bite The Bullet Baby - absolute class)
Smart Systems (Tingler and Creator)
and the Gary Cobain remix of Stakker Humanoid in 1992 was v. cool, you may
decry its lack of Bezerk samples mind.

Yup, and if you accidently let an alien impostor into the ship, you could
hear him start taking apart the ship right before you lost control and
crashed.

I seem to remember that if you didn't take off fast enough, the alien
pilot actually smashed through the cockpit glass.

Friday13th was Jason Vorhees, although you could argue that the first
one was his mother.
Nightmare on Elm Street was Freddy Kruger.
Sound Of Music was Von Trapp. The entire family. Scary.

Sounds like a great film, too bad I never got to see it.

Or any of the next 8.

I did, however, have the pleasure of watching Jason X at the cinema in
Cambridge last night and I can't even begin to tell you how bad the film is
!! Man this is a bad movie, unless of course you like a ridiculous plot
like you have never seen, mixed in with Prisoner-Cell-Block-H quality
special effects and a huge amount of cheese.
Boy am I glad I took the time to watch this cinematic masterpiece !!
Still, it was better than Batman. :-)

Rich.

Very true...he did. If you turned the engines on
while he was out there knocking, or when he was
running towards you, you fried him. Damn, that
was neat :) Suprised that never made it to the

I saw Bezerk for the first time at a travelling fun fair, a year or so
after i bought the record. The cool-factor of both game and record
immediately rose to 101%!

BTW, it was just prisoner here in OZ. Gotta love Doreen, Queen Bea and
Lizzy, later the Freak and whatever nasty 80s lezzos were around. Aussie
crap culture out there for the rest of the world. Next you will be talking
about the Flying Doctors or Hey Dad.

Sucked in world, we suck at TV.

I used to be, but I gave up when none of them were scary enough. I was re-
reading 'The Andromeda Strain' by Micheal Crichton and it describes one
guy who "could fall asleep in a horror movie." That's me, in a nutshell. I
remember thinking how cool they were when I was younger, tough. I dressed
up as Freddy for Hallowe'en when I was about 10.

The last primetime show I watched on a regular basis was Murphy Brown.

We don't get any of those in Denmark. We have BBC News, Sky News and CNN
Europe (if you have cable) and two weeks old 60 Minutes shows on
national TV. There is only one cable provider in Denmark, and they also
own all the phone lines. Damn imperialists!
