Can anyone recommend a site that will walk me through setting up my PC to
boot automatically to MAME upon startup? I'm considering a MAME cabinet
project, but I don't wan't to mess around with windows everytime I turn it
on... I'd like to simply see a mame screen upon startup.

Thanks!
-Rob

PS: I presume that alot of newer arcade games have a version of windows
that powers it because at an auction recently I seen a few that flashed a
windows screen when the game was booting... Is there anything special about
those types of programming versus what MAME does?

Aside from the fact that they are probably illegal rip-offs of Mame? No,
they don't do anything special.

A couple of different ways to go -- AdvanceMAME and AdvanceMenu are DOS-
based systems that will boot up a cab right into a MAME menu. You could
also go with a Linux-based front end.

If you do want Windows, you can simply put a shortcut to a front-end
like MAMEWAH in the startup folder, which hides Windows after it loads
(you get a second or two of the windows desktop, and then right into the
front end.)

I feel that I'm behind the times with MAME in the sense that I never really
got the hang of running it in DOS and find it much less user friendly than
MAME32 (which I've used exclusively). What's the "best" way to go if you
really don't know your way around DOS? I've got a fairly ballsy computer so
I don't think I lose much speed with MAME32, but are there other/better
versions of MAME designed to run off windows?

Why would someone use advanceMAME as opposed to the standard issue MAME for
DOS?

Go here:

http://mame.how.to/

Get fraggal's Boot CD and you wont have to do much. Lots of other good
info on that site as well.

The best Windows-based front end for a MAME cab, IMO, is MAMEWAH. There
are others, however, but I've generally liked the look and simplicity of
MAMEWAH for setting it up.

Unfortunately, the new version of MAMEWAH .95b, doesn't have a manual
yet and is a _lot_ more complicated to setup. Of course, you can design
your own custom layouts, and run PC programs, have up to 20 different
emulators, and unlimited custom game lists, so I guess some complexity
was to be expected in the new version!

Use MS DOS6.22 and ARCADEOS
ArcadeOS you can find at http://www.arcadeathome.com
the instructions are easy

For video use SciTech's Display doctor for DOS

http://www.scitechsoft.com/

And download CWSDPMI also on arcade@home's website
its an extended memory space manager MAME needs

My cab has been running flawless for years like that
runs fast too

Graphic cards after about 1995/1996 support VESA natively. Might just
have to be activated. Check your CD/floppy for a program which initiates
it.
