My thanks to MisterWhite for taking on the Instructions page making it

Both torrents are roughly the same size.
sfish2.bin was removed from mame and this file was in excess of 500Mb,
on the flipside about 500-600Mb of new roms were added to MAME since
v0.77 so the difference in overall size is very slight.
I have no idea how much percentage you would lose if you switched over
to the new torrent whilst incomplete on the old one, that is a risk I
leave to you. If you choose to do so I would recommend backing up what
you have already managed to get and starting the new torrent on the
backup.
If all looks good upon starting the new torrent you're probably better
off migrating to the new one.
Like I said I can't predict what would happen if you attempted this so
it's entirely up to you.
The 4 'u' .87 releases plus the .88 release equals about 1.13gigs - for me
at least...
0.87u1 added 512megs of new stuff...
0.87u3 changed sfish2 from a bin to a CHD so that accounts for most of the
other 500mb chunk...:-)

Only roms are included in the torrent so with the removal of
sfish2.bin and the addition of more or less the same amount of data in
new roms, the overall size difference is only 19Mb.
MAME v0.87 ROMS Torrent = 10258 MB
MAME v0.88 ROMS Torrent = 10274 MB

Or 16Mb if you can add up correctly ;o)
I think that bit torrent is the easiest and simplist way to get the
roms and I'd like to thank you for your time running the site and
seeding the torrents. All this makes things so much easier.
God Bless your cotton socks.

I've taken the risk...
Started from full mame 0.87, moved away sfish2.bin...
loaded the mame 0.88 .torrent file in my torrent client (Torrentstorm)
After a slow/long check it finished up at 91,26%...
It means i've to download about 900MB to complete again the set...
i think it's a lot for a 500MB update...
other opinions/experiences??

The thing is it is not really a 500Mb update, although 500Mb of new
roms were added a fair few sets have been also been affected by rom
renames or roms moved to other sets which is common with MAME Updates.
Changes like this will result in a change of the file hash as it will
be different when the set is MAMEzipped again this can mean you are
downloading sets which could be exactly the same but the internal rom
names are different.
Some of this can be resolved by Running a Scan on the romset with the
current binary and allowing ClrMamePro to do the rom renames etc. then
running MAMEzip on just the roms with a changed external date stamp.
Of course for this to work you have to make sure ClrMamePro changes
the datestamp of the zip file which was the primary reason for the
Settings I specified in the Settings Menu. I was meaning to add this
information to the tutorial but I didn't think the differences would
be as much as 400Mb.
Once you have run the Scan/Repair you could sort the roms folder by
"Last Modified" and just MAMEzip the roms that have a current
datestamp.
Of course even this is not perfect and if a large set has just 1 new
rom in it you will still have to download the entire set.
I'm sure MisterWhite will be monitoring this topic and it should be
easy enough to add this information to the instructions page to
minimise the amount of data that has to be downloaded again upon
entering a new torrent.
Like I said earlier this method of distributing roms is certainly not
perfect but it does for the most part work as it should, many people
re-download entire romsets when their set could be fixed very easily
with ClrMamePro so even having to download an extra 400Mb of data
won't make them flinch.
You'll probably find that even if this information is added to the
Tutorial page many people will just re-download this extra data
regardless.
