Missile Warning: Key to target

I am new to the game and this newsgroup, so pardon my ignorance on what may be a simple
question. When in a combat scenario, I will get the message "Missile Warning: Key to
Target" on the screen, and I have no idea what to do. This is a warning that I have
been locked on to, but whether I turn, speed up, or slow down, I can't dodge the missile,
and often I don't have countermeasures. My question is, what do you do when you get this
message? What does "key to target" mean? What key? I could not find any information in
the reference booklet that came with the game. I've tried everything with no luck.
Inevitably, I get destroyed by the missile. Can anyone lend some advice? It would be
much appreciated!
