How can I play this game on Linux?

So I hear that this game can be played on Windows 7 by manually editing the
registry, but I recently found out that I can run a different game (Star
Wars Episode 1 Racer) on my Ubuntu 14.04 boot using WINE. WINE has not
worked for Rogue Squadron because apparently it needs DirectX, which WINE
does not support.
This isn't critical or anything, I just wanted to play my old Star Wars
games again, and was wondering if anyone else has had any luck playing this
game outside of a VM or a separate boot for an older OS. If not, then I
might just get a small hard drive and boot Win XP on it, since I still have
an install disk sitting around.

did you run star wars episode I racers in wine? How did you solve the issue with the gamepad? the pods get tilt and stay that way when I turn left
