Hasn't Aglami been around since at least 1998? I'm coming up to my 11th
anniversary of posting.

...shit.

Am I an oldbie yet?

Ten and one years posting? That's not an oldie, it's more like post-oldie,
postmortem, deceased, ex-parrot!

Don't worry though, they always come back. No matter how old the poster is.

I feel like I must have been here at least 11 years - was I here
before you? It's so bloody long ago now I have no idea. But since I
just completely randomly ran into Jostein on Twitter, I thought I'd
come and say hi.

Also, I saw knäckebröd in IKEA the other day and it made me think of
you guys... particularly the ervaqreous one, who I see hasn't changed.
I have, I'm afraid. I'm old and decrepit now and sincerely doubt I can
get my legs behind my head anymore. :(

Haha, holy shit, good to run into you again!

You were definitely around already when I showed up, I can't be arsed to
check the RRRRRRRRRRRRwhatevers now but I think you've got a year or two on
me. Did you come in through the AGC connection originally?

You too, dude! I see you update your LJ occasionally (more often than me,

Poking back through Google Groups (pretty effective way to procrastinate in
the face of looming work deadlines, btw), looks like I lurked here through
a lot of '99 and only posted a few times that year, and mostly as Saera
(which was the name I used everywhere except AGC and alt.games.diablo).
Horrifyingly, I think I actually might have been responsible for the AGC
connection, as I started posting there in '98. I think I mentioned the
group in here and then Reinder started posting over there, maybe? Does
anyone else remember it differently? I found a crosspost I started in
January 2000, but it seemed like the groups had already met before that.

It's srs bsns, guys: I downloaded Xnews. But I always used to use
Netscape's newsreader, so apologies if I somehow noob this up completely.

You need to update your draft. I now have seven plants. One is named Chuck, I've
had it since 1994 or so and is in permanent near death. The others are more
recent additions, one of those, a ficus, is losing all its foliage. So by the
time your draft is finalized I might be down to 6 or even 5.

I'm thinking of calling one of the plants Sushi. My life is full of excitement.

I still have that photo too! And the rest of them... too bad the one of
you, me and Toki together is so small and blurry. Stupid non-digital
cameras, ruining the capturing of once-in-a-lifetime moments. You'll just
have to come back so we can take another one. I live with Toki now, in
Sydney, so it'll be easy. Since that was 9 years ago (madness!), shall we
meet again this time next year, for a 10 year reunion?

[Urgh, I just realised my 10 year highschool reunion is this year. That'll
be... fun? o_O]

You can practically swim here from China. What're you doing over there,
anyway?

Oh, how odd that we'd be talking about AGC in alt.dragons-inn; I only
remember going there to roleplay (and, from the one post I found of mine, I
appeared to be roleplaying some mashup of Myst mythology and the works of
Anne McCaffrey... I kind of want to hug 15-year-old me, so cute and dorky),
I don't remember any OOC discussions with people. Was it definitely
alt.dragons-inn and not alt.fan.dragons?

Also, Tobby and Luke were originally from AGC? How weird, I definitely
associate them more with this group.

Oh, my. This is disturbing on a number of levels, one of which is that you
appear to like The Big Bang Theory. ;P I've really tried to like that show
(actually, I forced myself to watch every episode in the process), and I
think it did get better in the later seasons, but it's still just not that
funny. I think the overenthusiastic laugh track is so irritating it
actually makes the show seem even less funny, heh.

But, yes, Ievins. I love that when you google him now, a bunch of the
first-page results are about JISBUs. :D

Do you by any chance still have our old emails? One thing I really regret is
that when I left school I didn't take a copy of all my emails from my school
email account.

(I just have a nostalgic thing about stuff from my past so it'd be great to

Mine doesn't have much of a stem, there is a bulb sticking out of the

Ah, that's what I'm doing wrong. I only add people I actually want to
talk to. What I should do is add any and every person I vaguely know.

I've not friended the plant. The plant currently has no friends. Or
posts. He's on a hunger strike for more water.

Anyway, wouldn't you agree it would be more disconcerting if instead of
me talking to plants, the plants would actually talk back?

Headbanging, check.
Whispering, check.
Milk, not yet.
Tongue beheading, seems doable.
Head in lap, does legs behind neck count?
The rest is gibberish. But it's a slow process.

I'm not quite the paranoid android. (No, android is not the OS in
question). But I certainly dislike it when websites do things behind my
back.

I've noticed disturbing amounts of traffic when I don't do javascript,
flash and ad blocking. Especially the ability to see what other websites
you visit(ed) is disturbing. Even more so when e-mail and logins are in
play.

Then there's the whole tracking thing, I find the idea of a guy in a
raincoat following you, jotting down everything you do, rather
unpleasant IRL. So why would I accept it in the virtual world?

Since you don't always know how trustworthy a link is, whether it's on a
website, in an e-mail or from who knows what short URL service, the sane
choice seemed a blanket no to all that crap. I can always give a
temporary okay.

I tend not to use certain websites at the same time. Sites with
information that I consider private, require me to login or could cost
me money, I prefer to open in a single browser window. No other windows,
no other tabs open. I decided to do that after Google tried to merge my
Youtube account, rendering it useless.

Hurray for the Usenet not being cool and hip like twitter. This old and
obsolete technology that *doesn't* tie you down to 140 characters max
nicely flies below the radar. At least if you don't count the binaries.

"They're not even capable of finding out who it really is potsing all
this stuff on the usenets." Hmmm, that has a ring of the "famous last
words".

Want absurd? How about a company where you could only get a new pen if
you returned your empty pen and filled out a form in triplicate. With
the empty pen. Very catch 22-y. If you could fill out the form, you
didn't need the pen, if you couldn't fill it out, you weren't eligible
to get a new pen. People who work in an environment like that tend to
wake up as a cockroach one day.

The road and immediate vicinity would be rendered treeless. It's one of
those road safety thingies. Bunch of wusses.

Brabant actually has sandy areas. Heath. Not quite the desert, but with
a nice gust of wind you might get some sand in your eyes and hair.
Nothing serious. Not like the killer sandstorm they had in Germany
recently. Hmmm, I don't think you got that news in China.

Desserts, however are quite abundant and tasty.

Cookies used to be readable by other sites. You can disable that now.
But stuff like java and flash are much more powerful tools than cookies.
The problem with whitelisting is that you exactly whitelist the sites
you trust and don't want to be misused. Like a mail provider, bank or
the company you work for. What if some new vulnerability pops up? It's
exactly the whitelisted items that are become problematic.

Again, rather safe than sorry. From what I've heard especially java and
flash can have problems in that regard. I think the chances of anything
happening are incredibly small, but with some stuff I'm just not gonna
risk it.

Well, "Mr I Had one glass for years and that was for guests, I drank
from the bottle", I never worked at that actual company. It's just an
anecdote from someone that did. The policy didn't last, unsurprisingly.
I have worked at places where they were rather strict, understocked or
just plain lazy about providing workers with their tools.

You can enable some stuff permanently, of course, with the plugin for
Firefox.

> java I do not even have on my systemHQ, flashsss is bloxd by dfeaultt

For Flash you also can turn off certain settings like auto-updating and
privacy sensitive stuff like third party info, but it makes you go to
their website via a flash app to do so.

Click right on a flash application that's running (for instance a
youtube clip) and go to general settings. Via the Adobe page you're
flashed off to you can find a way to change the settings after some clicks.

I have willed it to look like it used to. I did the same to Windows 7,
by going all classic.

Most programs have an opt-out auto update. Often well hidden. I tend to
turn those off because they slow down your computer, eat up bandwith and
all that crap. Oh, and the obnoxious pop ups of programs that weren't
even running but have a background process that autostarts with windows,
you gotta love those. Most aren't even security related. I often turn
those off BY DELETING THE WHOLE THING. And even that doesn't always work.

iTunes tends to add on Safari browser and other stuff one doesn't want
or need and hijacks the default browser option. So I avoid that one like
the plague. Apple products aren't the only that do such things, but they
are about the best known. About every other program wants to install
search bars. Some want constant access to the internet, to refresh the
ads. Or that's what they want you to think. Who knows what they send
over the internets...

Hmmm, for downloading flash movies I use Firefox plugins. I think stuff
like Chrome has similar plugins. You can even download most Youtube
stuff as MP4's to play on your Blu-Ray player, MP4 player, cell phone or
TV with an USB port.

What a contrast with the free world. We have movies depicting Westerners
as being dimwitted violent muscular types that beat easterners by virtue
of a bazooka or other firearm. Even if their opponents are flying ninjas.
