Check this FAQ out. Still under extreme construction and testing, but so far
I have managed
to get the most out of JA2. A really cool 99,9% error free JA2 tutorial.
Looks better in a fixed width font. Copy this text below into WINDOWS
NOTEPAD. HOW? Go to Edit, Select All, Copy.
Start Notepad via Start or Run -> notepad.exe. Select Edit and Paste.
In short: Let my wisdom be with you, for I shall share my experience with
you to aid you in your situtations.

JAGGED ALLIANCE 2 FAQ:

I. SECTION OF JAGGED ALLIANCE 2 FAQ: THE BASICS AND THE TIPS

1) I.M.P.

IMP - Institute for Mercenary Profiling

Combinations:

Teaching(Expert) 4142-1543-1123-2341
Stealthy(Expert) 6232-1332-2243-3441
NightOps(Expert) 2234-1333-2333-3441

2) HATES ONE, LIKES ONE

For A.I.M. mercs, if A hates B and are in
the same sector, then A will not extend
contract. If A hates B but likes C and all
are in the same sector, then A will extend
contract. For M.E.R.C. mercs, if A hates B,
then A will quit.

Exceptions:

Static will not sign contract, even if him
and Larry aren't in the same sector.
Dynamo hates Bubba will not quit even if
they are in the same sector.

4.1.) CREATING ENHANCEMENTS

How to create enhancements from numerous items you get in JA2:

GBE or Gun Barrel Extender can be attached to a rifle
which enhances range of a gun. GBE consists of
a steel tube, quick glue and a piece of gum.
Attach piece of gum and quick glue to a steel tube.

R&S or Rod & Spring can be attached to a rifle to
boost the rate of fire. R&S is made of an aluminium
rod and a spring. Simply put them together.

An alarm can be attached to a door, which makes loud
sounds when the door is opened. Simply put a soda can
and a string together.

X-Ray Detector (XRD) detects enemies on the map. This is
very complicated combining of items, so hire a merc
with high mechanics and electronics.

Creating an XRD:

You need:

- Lame-Boy display
- Kid-Tendo fumblepak
- A pack of gum
- X-ray tube
- Copper wires
- AA batteries

1. Buy Lame-Boy display and Kid-Tendo fumblepak at Frank's
Electronics Store in Balime.
2. Insert gum in Kid-Tendo fumblepak
3. Put X-ray Tube in fumblepak
4. Put Copper Wires on Lame-Boy display
5. Combine Lame-Boy display and fumblepak
6. Insert some AA batteries and voila!

Using an XRD:

Use it like you would use a gun:

1. Put it on your merc's hand, like you would a gun
2. Right-click the mouse
3. Click on the desired spot (Costs 2 APs)
4. You should see red squares on the map.
Those squares are the enemies hiding.

4.2.) ENHANCEMENTS FOR GUNS

Laser Scope:
Attach it to any gun. Creates a visible red spot on the enemy.

Sniper Scope:
Attach it to a rifle. Significantly improves targeting, like
aiming on a head, but far away and with less APs.

Underslung Grenade Launcher - TALON:
Fires 40mm grenades, which you would normally launch from a M-79.
Attach it to a rifle, then attach a 40mm grenade.

Duckbill:
Spreads the buckshot from close assault rifles into a horizontal
line instead of a circular pattern.

Silencer:
Useful only when you want to keep things quiet. Usable only on
pistols.

4.3.) ACCESSORIES

Knuckle Dusters:
Inflicts more damage when fighting hand to hand.

Throwing Knife:
Good when in stealth, camouflaged and attacking at night.
You can even kill the enemy with one try.

Canteen:
A bottle of water to regenerate energy.

First Aid Kit:
The first aid kit is used for first aid.

Medical Kit:
For first aid and for more serious medical attention, like
regenerating health of mercs.

Tool Kit:
For repairing numerous items.

Wire Cutters:
They are used for cutting wire fences.

Regeneration Booster:
Boosts your regeneration, useful when low in health and
in need to get it quickly. Also restores much of your health,
if you are low in medical kits.

Energy Booster:
Useful when it gets to APs. Temporarily doubles your APs.

Camouflage Kit:
To get camouflaged, use it. This is really good when attacking
at night and in stealth mode.

Locksmith Kit:
For lockpicking. Serves you great if you have a merc with a
lockpicking skill.

Maddog has a CAWS (Close Assault Weapon System) shotgun.
Iggy has got a rocket rifle.

Ira will join you as soon as you talk to Miguel.
Dimitri will join you after food supplies reach
to Omerta. Miguel and Carlos will join you after
you conquer Balime, Drassen, Alma, Chitzena,
Cambria and Grumm. Conrad will ask for 5500$, but
if you refuse he will drop his price to 3300$/day.

6.2.) EXPLANATION OF SKILLS

Lock Picking

If you have this skill and a locksmith kit, you can use it to
pick locks and open doors, crates or gates.

Night Ops

More visual range when attacking at night.

Stealthy

Less or no sounds at making footsteps and also the enemy
can not hear you and move towards you.

Teaching

Better teaching and quicker learning. Useful to rack up skills.

Auto Weapons

A decrease in mercs action points for burst mode.

Heavy Weapons (EMPTY)

Throwing

More accuracy at throwing knives and more damage.

Knifing

Merc inflicts more damage when using knives.

Hand to hand

Merc inflicts more damage when punching.

Ambidextrous

Accurate when firing guns with both hands.

Electronics

A skill in electronics can help you combine electronical items.

7) VEHICLES

Name Owned by Location of vehicle

Icecream Truck Hamous Random. On upper half of the map.
Hummer Dave Random. Near Balime.
Chopper Skyrider Random. Near Drassen.

Note:

- if you want to get Hummer from Dave, talk to Dave
and give him 10,000$ - in a day the car will be ready.
- to get the icecream truck, hire Hamous. You can then
dismiss Hamous and still keep the truck.
- you actually need the chopper as a transport carrier,
but the transport isn't free. You have to pay Skyrider
each air-space unsecured sector 1000$ and each secured one
100$. Conquer SAM sites and train 20 regular militia to
defend against Deidranna's soldiers and elite soldiers.

8) TYPES AND CLASSES OF ARMOR

Name Class Type Armor (in %)

Flak Jacket C Vest 11%
Steel Helmet C Helmet 4%

Kevlar Vest B Vest (EMPTY)
Kevlar Helmet B Helmet (EMPTY)
Kevlar Leggings B Pants (EMPTY)

Spectra Vest A Vest (EMPTY)
Spectra Helmet A Helmet (EMPTY)
Spectra Leggings A Pants (EMPTY)

Leather Jacket Special Jacket 1%
Leather & Kevlar Jacket Special Jacket (EMPTY)
Deidranna T-Shirt Special Shirt 0%
Arulco T-Shirt Special Shirt 0%

Compound 18 further treats the armor.
If C18 is in perfect condition (100%),
the armor will increase by 5%. If not,
the strength of the armor will be lower.
Ceramic plates, offer a maximum amount
of 15% - 20% more armor.

Tip:

If you have a Spectra vest, helmet and pants
on your character the armor strength will show
70%. To further improve the strength of the
armor, use C18 on the armor. If you use C18
on all parts of armor, the armor strength will
be 85%. Place ceramic plates in the C18
Spectra vest and you have a 100% armor, if the
plates are at least in good condition.

Equation:

SPECTRA VEST + SPECTRA HELMET + SPECTRA PANTS = 70%
70% + 3 x C18 = 70% + 3 x 5% = 85%
85% + CERAMIC PLATES = 100% or more

Benefit:

The enemy will at least have to shoot you twice with a rifle.
The amount of damage reduced will be astronomical.

Note:

- the plates are not repairable
- the amount of strength in percent reduces
the amount of damage which was caused by a bullet.
- it doesn't matter, how strong is your armor,
a rocket rifle will always penetrate it.

9.1.) KILLING THE BUGS

You can easily kill the creatures if you find the
Deidranna's missing scientist:

- sometimes he will tell that you can have his robot, but because
the robot isn't finished, he will ask you to bring him a rifle and
a video-camera.
- sometimes you must destroy the robot, he will tell you that he will
build another one and you must bring him a rifle and a video-camera
as a part of the robot.

In a day the robot will be finished, the scientist
will give you the remote control and you can go fight the creatures.

Q: Why is it better killing the creatures with the robot?
A: It's better because the creatures can't smell it.

Q: Where can I find the scientist?
A: His location is rather random.

Q: How to I control the robot?
A: Simply put the robot remote control on one of your mercs.
They must be in the same squad. The control prevents the
use of any other head accessory.

Note:

- the rifle you gave to Deidranna's scientist, the one will
be equipped on the robot.
- when the rifle is out of juice, use your merc to reload the
robot.
- move your robot like you would your merc.

The other thing you can do is to find Gabby, Deidranna's other
scientist. Gabby can make stealth concotion for bugs. Buy a jar
of elixir there, which makes you rather invisible to the bugs.
Use the elixir like you would use a camo kit or a canteen.
Be careful, the stuff wears off after a while you using it.

9.2.) SELLING BLOODCAT - CREATURE PARTS

You can get a lot of money if you collect bug and bloodcat parts.
Sell the parts to Micky, an animal part collector or to Gabby,
who makes the elixir from those parts.

10) BUYING AND REPAIRING ITEMS

1) Tony deals in arms. He is in San Mona in the back of a porno shop.
2) You can order from Bobby Ray's Guns and Things web site. You can
find the link in A.I.M. links web site.
3) Keith deals in all kinds of goods. You will find him in Cambria,
after you have enough loyalty you can buy goods from him.
4) Perko repairs almost everything but electronics.
You can find him in Cambria.
5) Fredo only repairs electronics. His location is in Grumm.
6) Frank deals in electronic goods. He is in Balime.
7) Howard deals in pharmaceutical goods. This counts medical kits,
first aid kits, regeneration boosters and other. Howard is in
Balime.
8) Devin deals in explosives. His location is random.
You can kill him and get his stuff and 5,000 $.
9) Arnie is the best repairman in all of Arulco. His location
is in Grumm, next to Fredo.

11) GETTING PEOPLE AND THINGS TO THEIR PLACES

1) Skyrider: You must find him and get him to the Drassen airport.
His location is random, but always near Drassen. Then you can
use him as your transport carrier.

2) John and Mary: They are in Chitzena. Because they are lost,
they want to go home. Escort them to the Drassen airport.

3) Maria: Angel will ask you to bring Maria to him.
She's in San Mona, in the Shady Lady. You must talk to Angel first.
Beware of Kingpin's guys! They might kill you!

4) Chalice: Yanni in Chitzena will ask you to bring him the Chalice
Of Chance. It will raise your loyalty. Kingpin offers you 20,000$
for the Chalice if you win the Fighting Competition three
times in San Mona.

5) Bounty heads: Cut the heads off the terrorists with a knife or a
machete. Use it like a gun and click on to the body.
Your merc will cut the head. Then give the head to Carmen.

6) Joey: Find Joey and bring him to Martha, his mother. You will
find a raise in loyalty at Cambria.

12.1.) TIPS & TRICKS TO GET A LOT OF MONEY

1) Carmen is an international bounty hunter (a head snatcher!).
Talk to him then bring him the heads from terrorists which are
on the disk he gave you. You get $$$!
(Note: Carmen is not always in the Drassen bar waiting for you
to give you the money. If he's not there, search the whole sector.)
2) Find the chests of money in San Mona Mine. You get 30,000$!
Kingpin is going to get you, so be careful!
3) Collect silver and golden nuggets in the mines. You get approx.
2000$ per silver mine and 5000$ per gold mine.
4) Sell bug and cat parts.
5) Rescue an old couple in Chitzena, John and Mary and you get 2000$
and two awesome AUTOMAG III guns.
6) Kill the dealing persons. You get all their money and all their
goods. Don't kill Tony or you'll get into a lot of trouble.
7) Win the Extreme Fighting Competiton three times. If you bet the
highest bet of 5,000$ and use Blood or Dr.Q as your fighters,
you win 20,000$!
8) Threaten Armand in Balime and he will give you 10,800 $!

12.2.) TIPS & TRICKS ON HIRING MERCS

1) At first, hire mercs with a lot of wisdom and create your
IMP merc, because it's practically free.
2) Then, when it comes to marksmanship, save some cash and hire
some crackshots, like Ice, Buzz, Lynx or Sidney.
3) When you want a really good merc and are ready to spend a lot of
money on it, hire Shadow. He is especially trained in night ops
and he is personally my favourite.
4) If you want to train militias and not waste the time, because
the contract's running, hire mercs from the M.E.R.C. site.
Most appropriate are Flo, Gasket, Biff or Razor. They learn
quickly, because their leadership skill is very low.
5) When you have your primary mercs well trained and you
conquered at least Drassen, Cambria and Grumm, have guns,
cash, crackshots and ammo, the stage is yours.

12.3.) OTHER TIPS

1) Threaten Ernest in Orta basement three times and he will lead you
to a room full of rocket rifles.

12.4.) CHEATS

Type CTRL + GABBI at the tactical screen. You will get a message
saying CHEAT LEVEL TWO REACHED along with a message saying that the
history log has been updated. Truly unfortunate, but you will see a
message in the history log saying CHEAT USED. Use these cheats
carefully, or you have the potential to create havoc!

On the tactical screen:

ALT + O will kill all enemies in the current sector.
ALT + E will allow to see all enemies and civilians in current sector.
CTRL + U will restore all the health and energy of your mercs.
CTRL + T will capture your squad for the Queen.
ALT + T will teleport your merc to the desired location.

On the laptop:

Press + to gain 100,000$.
Press - to lose 10,000$.

III. SECTION OF THE JAGGED ALLIANCE 2 FAQ: CITIES & CITIZENS

1) LOYALTY

Increasing loyalty is an important of the game. It
helps you train militia, more mine income. BUT, if
you're playing Sci Fi mode, The Queen will get mad
and send bugs to your town. Choose realistic mode,
it's much easier.

You can increase loyalty with different actions that
will help the citizens and they will be grateful for
you.

Omerta: You will get 100% increase in loyalty if you talk to
Father Walker. The food will come to Omerta.

Chitzena: You will get 100% loyalty if you bring the Chalice
of Chance to them, which is in the Balime museum. Give it
to Yanni, the ruins caretaker.

Drassen: Increasing Drassen's loyalty is easy. Just kill the
lady Doreen in the sweatshop. The kids will also be happy.

Cambria: An increase in loyalty at Cambria is tough. Find
Joey and bring him to his mother, Martha.

Alma: Slaughter the bloodcat lair. Sometimes you will have
to do it twice. Talk to Auntie before and after you do that.

Grumm: You cannot increase loyalty in Grumm, because it is
a fine city.

Balime: You cannot increase loyalty in Balime, you even lose
it because you steal the Chalice.

2) MILITIA

Training militia is also a very important part of JA2.
Use trainers with high leadership and the Teaching or
Teaching(Expert) skill. The best trainer is Raider.

Good trainers are: Gus, Len, Conrad, Miguel.

There are three sorts of militia:

a) GREEN militia
b) REGULAR militia
c) VETERAN militia

A green militia is not a good militia. It's not very reliable
and also has got bad guns at first. A regular militia is later
a very good militia. Good rifles and sub-machine guns too.
A veteran militia comes equipped with rocket rifles and LAWs.

Attacking the patrols that enter sectors next to the towns is very
important. I send out one man to "lightup" a sector and from then on you
see when enemies are in that sector. Militia automatically show enemy
presence and the number in adjacent sectors. I "lightup" road sectors
down the way so I can see the enemy several sectors away. I stop the
helicopter over every dark sector it passes over for a second and let
out a merc for a second to "lightup" sectors all over.

Talk to Auntie to get the Bloodcat Quest. Attack at night for best

Talk to Martha in Cambria to get the Joey Quest.

You do not lose Loyalty for stealing the Chalice if done without being
observed, you lose Loyalty for attacking the guard or killing the rich
people.

All loyalties reach 100% at some time if you protect the city from
counterattaks and kill the nearby patrols even without doing the quests.

What he means is that, with Ira learning fast, you get a second Raider,
for free. That's definately better, and since she ain't got any combat
value, you don't have to redirect fighting mercs to trainers.

That beats raider IMO.

Raider costs $2000 per day to start and goes up with experience, Ira
costs $0 and is available Day 1. If that was the only "error" you found
in my commentary then I do not mind you having your own opinion. I might
hire Raider after I have 2 mines but not before. Actually in the many
games I have played I skipped Raider except once. I spend my money on
shooters and not the auxilary help.

My present game I started with a Custom and Lynx, added Bull when I was
ready to fight in San Mona and Raven after I took Drassen and its SAM. I
did hire Flo when I wanted a second Militia trainer but everyone else is
Arulco grown.

I think I'll test Raider vs Ira in a game, each will start at the exact
same time if possible under the same circumstances. I wonder if Raider
gets tired quicker or sleeps longer.

I like to kill them too. I tried Shank since his parents were from
Balime but he refused to kill them (they evidently are not his parents).
Eventually the Loyalty rises anyway, if I have good control of Cambria
so I can leave a couple good mercs in Balime I just wait for the Loyalty

The Steyr is a unique weapon, it is actually a sniper rifle, machine gun,
SMG, assault rifle and lord only knows what else. The body of the Steyr is
a standard design, it then has its purpose decided by the barrel fitted. My
guess would be that the weapon in question is the assault rifle or sniper
variety, not 100% sure. I only know this since my force were the only ones
to issue the Steyr as an SMG in the UK, and it looks more like the M16 size
than an MP5

Yeah, though I only killed 'em the first game, subsequently I've just

Generally, the difference between a SMG and an assault rifle is that SMGs
fire handgun ammo while ARs fire rifle ammo. So a Styr would only be a SMG
if it was chambered to fire handgun ammo (like 9mm), which I think would be
a waste. I have seen it before though (with the CAR-15ish thing that was
marketed a few years ago to police).

I stand corrected, although it seems foolish to take a nice compact weapon
that fires rifle rounds and reengineer it to fire handgun ammo (I suppose
over penentration might have been a problem).

That's why I dislike full automatic weapons in general. I'd much rather fire
1 or 2 aimed shots to put my target down, as opposed to using half a mag
and hoping I do enough damage ("spray and pray" sucks). That's also why I
like rifles and shotguns better that handguns. BTW, having a stray shot come
through a wall can really ruin your day.

But under penetration will make the target able to keep on fighting, usually
resulting in the death of someone who wouldn't have been harmed if the bullet
had penetrated properly and killed the target right away. It shouldn't punch
through walls, right, but many policemen have lost their life due to
underpowered ammunition. Too few is just as bas as too much.

Another bad thing about over penetration is if the bullet goes straight
through without hitting bone or a major organ the wound channel may close in
on it self with little effect (the target will probably bleed to death, but
not in time to effect the current fight). That's the reason for hollow
points and pre-fragmented ammo (both use different methods for the same
effect) , they're made to enlarge the wound channel to cause shock and
(hopefully) make it large enough to prevent it from closing itself. I'm
sorry if I sound like I disagre about under penetration (because it is bad
to), but over penetration can be just as bad (but for more reasons).

If expansion occured safely, I'd support HPs to, but given technical defects and
other circumstances (like the bullet wrapped in cloth) HPs only work in a bout
70% of the cases. Also them expand on impact. How can they hit a vital organ or
blood vessel then ? Just curious how you envision that.

talon) should open 99% of the time. Just because HPs expand on impact
doesn't mean they stop moving (unless the target is wearing body armour).
The idea is that the bullet impacts, expands (good HPs should expand 150%
to 200% of starting diameter with out losing mass ), and transfers the rest
of it's energy to the target (hopefully creating a large wound channel and
stopping in the body). If the bullet happens to hit something important
that's just a bonus.

I Like what I've seen from prefragmented ammo. It works with the same
goal as HPs (larger wound channel, expand all energy in target), and has the
same basic problem (doesn't work to well against body armour), but it's
method is very different. The one method I've seen involves a outer shell
filled with shot suspened in gel. Basically the bullet hits the target
rupturing the case, the shot is sent into the the body causing a hugh wound
and multipe wound channels.

Yeah, yeah, OK, that's right. But how can they penetrate deeply enough to damage
organs or importnat blood vessels ? I mean, they'd need more muzzle energy then
APs due to vastly enhanced friction. Tell me if I'm wrong, but I picture an HP
expanding on impact and then drilling into the body. So how can it possibly go
as deep as AP with the same charge ? Given that the bullet is no one of those P+
or +P+ cartridges.

OK, what happens is a standard jacketed military round tends to pass
straight through the target. Since the bullets will pass through they
don't transfer all the available kinetic energy to the target, leaving a
narrow wound channel. Flat front, hollow point and fragmenting bullets
tend to deform and transfer most or all of the available kinetic energy
to the target, creating much larger wounds. IIRC "Hydrashok" bullets
are just hollow point that are designed to transfer the maximum kinetic
energy to the target. The "hydrashok" refers to the wave of kinetic
energy in the target's body that results from the impact of the round.
Think of a rock dropped in a pool water: the splash and expanding
circular waves represent the kinetic energy transferred from the rock to
the water (expressed by the formula E=1/2MV squared). The same thing
happens in the body-which is mostly water-except much more suddenly,
explosively and violently. The impact of a hollow point round in the
lower leg can cause a sufficiently powerful shock wave as to damage and
destroy tissue in the upper torso. The actual wound channel need not be
as large as the major tissue damage is caused by the shock wave. All
these rounds will penetrate soft tissue and may even pass through, but
the tissue damage is enormous. This is considered inhumane and is the
reason why militaries must use metal jacketed rounds by international
law.

You only need to free 5 cities, not six.

Don't remind me. Luckly I had mercs with normal Spectra, since
whateverhisname in Estoni doesn't sell much of the Compound-18.
