I CANNOT complete mission 5 AND have enough left to beat mission 6. I've
only beaten mission 5 once. I've looked at the walkthroughs. I've seen the
useless cheat codes out there; I've tried the "Use massive numbers of
Salvage
Corvettes backed by repair corvettes to keep them alive". NOTHING works for
me... the mission just seems to be impossible to me to complete without
losing
down to only one of the seven Ion Array Frigates, one remaining support
Frigate,
and one assault frigate (which always gets toasted early in mission 6...).
I need REAL help; the walkthroughs aren't doing it. The techniques aren't
doing it. The cheats are useless except for debugging, I think (does
turning
off Tactics help in anything other than in the Skirmish mode?). I need
either a
save editor or a trainer that works. None of the ones I've seen work, at
least not for v1.05. Don't worry, I know better than to ever try going
online;
I don't "cheat" other people, only when I get frustrated single player, and
having my rear handed to me repeatedly is going to keep me from ever
going multiplayer... but I want to SEE the story, now that they've got me
intrigued.
Can anyone help?

Can't help with your game, but the rad game tools (www.radgametools.com I
think) will let you watch the movies and see how the story turns out.

Send out two resource collectors one to the right and one to the left. Set
them to harvest the resources. Watrch them carefully as they harvest and as
soon as they approach a distance of 49 km bring them back. If you exceed 49
km then the Tiiadan attack in full force. Move your resource collectors and
research ship way back behind your mother ship so they won't be destroyed in
the impending battle.
Mean while build (if you don't have these already) about 15 heavy corvettes,
20 or so interceptors and a bunch of plasma bombers. You should also try to
build as many salvage corvettes as you can. Get a group of about ten
salvage corvettes and move them back a bit and out of harms way.
Send out your corvettes to take out any enemy fighters and destroy the enemy
resource collectors with your interceptors and plasma bombers. Do not
follow the resource collectors to far back if they get away or you will
alert the entire Tiiadan fleet. You will notice several groups of enemy
ship begin advancing on your mothership. Wait for them to approach.
You shoul dnotice a few enemy assault and ion frigates attack first destroy
a few of them and try to salvage two or more. I use a group of scouts set
to passive tacics to fly around and distract the frigates. Then send in you
salvage corvettes. You should be able to salvage a few frigates.
After you have slavaged the frigates emediately dock your salvage corvettes
if they get damaged and move them back out of harms way again.
Now send out a few scouts to recon around and find any approaching frigates
so you can prepare for them. Try detroying them with your interceptors and
bombers. use your corvettes to take out any enemy fighter that show up to
attack your own fighters and bombers.
After a while you should see two detroyers and a carrier approaching. With
any luck you will have either captured or detroyed most of the frigates by
now. The destroyers are escorted by a bunch of fighters and defenders. Use
your corvetes and fighters to take them out. Attack the destroyers one at a
time. You should also have a bunch of frigatesincluding ion frigates from
previous missions. Use them on the detroyers. Leave the carrier alone
though.
Once the destroyers you can salvage the carrier. Pick off any fighters as
they are launched by the carrier. If you have enough salvage corvettes and
don't mind losing a few you can try to salvage on of the detroyers as well.
You should at least destroy one of them though. I often capture both but
the cost is usually a whole bunch of corvettes and makes the value of the
capture less than the cost of the loss.
In any case try out these tactics and play around a bit and you will work
out something.

Hi. To beat mission 5, you just need more firepower. You should have 4
carriers and 4 refineries along with max fighters and corvettes. Move
everybody together and you'll be fine. The carriers and refineries add
quite a bit of firepower if you have MAX number of them.
No, I'm just lousy at the original. The next mission after the one I'm
having
so much problem is the Asteroid Belt mission; I can't seem to survive with
sufficient forces from mission 5 to win that (I start Mission 5 with 2
assault
Frigates and >7< Ion Array Frigates, plus some support, 10 salvage, etc, and
a half dozen heavy corvettes and just can't seem to keep from having little
left when I'm done).

Oh the original Homeworld. Lucky for you I wrote the first FAQ on the game.
In that mission where you have to destroy the asteroids, just use bombers
and interceptors in sphere formation to attack the asteroids. Have one
giant sphere with as many bombers and fighters as you can make. Send all
your other ships out of the asteroid belt to the left or right of the
mothership. Only your mothership needs to get through the asteroid belt.
Look down on your mothership to get a better view of which asteroids are
going to hit her and attack only those asteroids. I think your other
problem is the heavy corvettes. Only salvage corvettes are useful in this
game. Stick with fighters, frigates, and the larger ships. Only in the
final missions when you don't need salvage corvettes should you build other
corvettes.
I know you don't like walkthru's, but why cheat when it's easy to get thru ?
Here's an excerpt from a walkthru I wrote under the name Joe Dredd a few
years ago and posted to this group as Drax. Google and you'll find the whole
thing, here's the relevant bits anyway.
5)
Great Wastelands (again)
From here on in you can pretty much ignore Fleet Command, the guy seems to
be trying to get you killed.
Guard your collectors with your controller and set them harvesting. As a
minimum, your fleet should consist of 20 interceptors, 15 of those newly
researched attack bombers and 3 ion array frigates. Use any spare Rus to
build up your salvage fleet to as close to 16 units as possible.
Take a look at the sensor map. Notice how the dust clouds form two arms
radiating out from a common origin? Let your collectors get about halfway,
maybe a little less, along one arm then move them across to the other one.
Starting at the tip nearest the mothership, set them harvesting again.
Set your interceptors to guard your bombers. Form a single capital ship
group aided by the support frigate. Set your salvage groups to guard the
support frigate. Move the whole ensemble up the gap between the two arms and
have them stop on aggressive mode just before the junction. Guard your
frigates with the bomber group; this will also bring the interceptors into
play.
Once the attack begins things move quickly. Dock your collectors with the
mothership and leave them there. When FC informs you of two enemy
harvesters, grab them with one of your salvage groups.
Eventually the enemy brings out his heavy guns in the shape of two
destroyers, a carrier and an associated support frigate. Wait 'til the
destroyers are going after your cap ships then grab the whole lot with the
salvage corvettes, you should walk away with at least one destroyer and the
support frigate.
Once that battle is fought harvest the remaining resources. Now it's time to
organise your fleet. Form two capital ship groups of at least four units
each. 20 interceptors, 10 bombers and 8 light/heavy corvettes should be
enough to see you through the next level. Finally group all support vessels,
frigates and corvettes into a squadron.
6)
Diamond Shoals.
This moves quickly so pay attention.
Take your support group and set it behind the mother ship, then get them to
support the old thing. Position your cap ship groups to either side of the
MS. Form up your strike craft, claw for interceptors, X for the bombers and
sphere for the corvettes, set them all to evasive, move them to one side of
the MS. Set the resource controller to guard any collectors you have, set
them all to evasive. Use the 3D features in the sensor map to move your
salvage frigates straight up out of the path of asteroids.
Now we're ready. The MS simply has to survive its journey through the
asteroid field, easier said than done. I altered my views so that I was
centered on the MS looking at it from the top down, the ship itself was
pointing to the bottom of my screen. This gave me a pretty good view of the
incoming rocks, your mileage may vary. Pause the game and play with the
views, you may find one that suits you better.
Cycling between your strike craft groups, target each big rock as it appears
on the screen. In order of effectiveness the groups are bombers,
interceptors and corvettes. If you ever hear the words "assuming holding
pattern", get the relevant group attacking something, anything. If a group
stands still in this field they'll be pulped pretty quickly.
Once you've smashed a few rocks set your harvesters off collecting, there
won't be much here but every little helps.
Keep an eye on the cap ship groups, their first priority is to protect
themselves, but they should also be zapping any rocks that come close to
them. Don't pull them in front of the MS though or you'll lose them.
There's a brief lull when the interceptors announce they're running out of
fuel, let the bombers and corvettes handle things for now and make more
aggressive use of the cap ships. When the interceptors have refuelled put
them back in formation and get them blasting rocks. By the time the bombers
start running dry you're almost out of the woods, unless your MS's health
bar is in the red you can safely dock them.
Once you're clear of the field, harvest what resources you can and do your
research. The next mission has a quiet beginning so relax.
The drone frigates are really handy during the Kadesh missions that follow.
I build about 8 or so and set them to guard the MS in sphere formation. The
drones can take out those pesky fighters easily. The drone frigates
combined witha few assault frigates and a destroyer or two from mission 4
can be a lethal force against fighters and pack enough punch to handle
anything that pops up. Do not send your destroyer in to attack the KAdesh
motherships or the Kadeshi will ram it and you will lose it before you cause
much damage with it.
Anyays hope this helps.

Drax, the point is >IT AIN'T EASY< I can't seem to do it... PERIOD. I've
tried
eight different walkthroughs (including yours) that all give the same basic
strategy
and >IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME<
I've now played this scenario over 70 times... I've won ONCE, and all I had
left
was one heavy frigate, two ion array frigates, one support frigate, two
resource
collectors, three heavy corverttes, the research frigate, and two plasma
bomb
fighters left. That let me live for a whopping 70 seconds in my best try at
number 6. I'm obviously not coming out of mission 5 with enough stuff.
I cannot defeat mission 6 with enough stuff using ANY of the techniques in
any of the walkthroughs to make it. I'm about ready to give the use the
disk
as a coaster.
I said I must be the worlds worst Homeworld player... I bow before all of
you
guys who were able to play the game and beat this mission; I can win the
instant
action missions against the CPU 100% of the time... but I can't seem to beat
these
missions. I need a CHEAT or TRAINER. Techniques are just getting me more
frustrated as I waste yet another two or three hours losing the same boring
mission.
I've seen in the walkthrough that there are some darn decent missions; these
aren't
them, at least not after the 20th try. And don't even get me started on
what it means
to try fifty times to win >ONE MISSION<, much less the seventy I'm up to.
I mean I'm starting this with >ZERO< scouts or interceptors... all I've
managed to
end the mission with are seven Ion Array Frigates, 10 salvage frigates, one
repair
corvette, two Assault Frigates, one light corvette, 6 heavy corvettes, the
resource
collectors, the resource controller, and a single research ship. I've built
scouts,
interceptors, and corvettes out the wahzoo, but they all DIE just before the
end
of the mission; the best I've ever done was get up to 30 scouts in a group,
with
10 bombers and 10 HCs in the furball... the fricking bombers destroyed >MY<
scouts... useless things they are. I am frustrated as all get out with this
game.

It's been a couple of years since I played HW1's single player game but ISTR
mission 3 or 4 was fairly important when it came to building up your fleet
for mission 5.
I don't know of any trainers I'm afraid, but the best advice I can give is
to find a walkthru you like and follow it right from the start, mission 1.
I'm pretty sure I was in a similar postion to you the first time I played it
through (it's been a few years) in the end I just started from the very
begining again and learned to save often :)
The first few missions don't take long so it shouldn't take much more than
an hour to get back to where you are now. The walkthru I wrote does give
recommended fleet strengths all the way thru. The hard bit for me at first
was learning not to overbuild and wasting RUs which are quite precious in
the first half of the single player.
Stick with it mate, it's well worth the effort.
Build a few plasma bombers and go after the enemy resource collectors with
it. Don't worry to much about the enemy resource collectors if you can't
get them as they don't harvest to much anyway.
The biggest problem you will have is when the carrier shows up and starts
pumping out fighters like there is no tomorrow. The solution is simple
destroy the carrier as quickly as you can. The corvettes should mke light
work of it. In the mean time set your ion frigates to take out a detroyer.
Once one destroyer is gone try to salvage the other destroyer otherwise
destroy it. Just a tip move your frigates away fromt he second destroyer if
you wish to salvage it as they will attack the destroyer and likely destroy
it if you leave them nearby.
The trick is to focus all firepower on one destroyer at a time. That way
you can hurt them badly real quick and their destruction will be swift.
You will notice a few frigates showing up throughout the mission but your
corvettes should be able to take them out. Again you can try salvaging a
few of them but be careful not to lose to many salvage corvettes doing so.
In any case play around a bit with the idea you have and see how you go. I
find heavy corvettes very useful in this mission they are fairly cheap and
carry a fair punch. If they get damaged then dock them to keep them in top
notch condition.

I don't much like the drones. A good technique in Kadesh is to build
a wall of defenders, and very little else -- retire most harvesters so
they don't get killed. You keep the RUs if you survive and can
rebuild them later. Interceptors don't do much good, but bombers are
useful. If you are getting good you can salvage fuel pods very
effectively, but in a survival strategy, just bomb them. Don't
bother bombing the needle ship.

I feel your pain. Many people are feeling this way with M12 in
the new HW2.
It's important to enter each level with enough stuff. Some good
ideas are
- make liberal use of saved games;
- go back to previous levels to get yourself setup
for the next after you get killed in the next.
The two wasteland missions are where you start to turn the tide on
being starved for resources and firepower in the game. In the first,
your jobs are (a) stay alive; (b) kill opposition; (c) catch all
the array frigates.
You need 10-12 salvage corvettes, underneath the mothership a ways.
Send things out forward, and keep the alive killing opposition. At
some point, the array frigates hyper in around the MS. If you have
the salvettes well positioned, you band-box target the AFs and
capture them all. You can then use these 5 AFs to kill the carrier.
Capture the two trailing AFs too.
When you do this, you enter the next wasteland mission with 5-7
array frigates, which are slow but very powerful.
Build fighters and bombers for the next wasteland. Follow the
directions and don't let your harvesters get too far forward.
Move your AFs forward, with some escort. These can wipe out the
approaching assault frigs and ion frigs if you beat down the
attacking fighters and bombers with your own escort. (You can
recycle the AFs at this point for RUs, since they are worthless
from here on out.)
As the destroyers and carrier approach, you can capture them too,
protecting the salvagers with your attack units.
Hints:
1. Take out things that are threats to salvage corvettes.
2. Do aggressive salvage. It's faster than killing stuff,
and you get to keep what you steal.
good luck,
Ok, on one of the times that I went back to that mission, I GOT those.
All seven. And I still had ~10 Salvage corvettes, plus one repair
corvette. I also ended that mission with 1 Light Corvette and 6
Heavy Corvettes, two Assault Frigates, and the Research ship.
>ALL< of my scouts and interceptors were toasted by the end of
the mission.
That's the save I've done for ~50 of the missions in the V asteroid
field (Mission 5, I think). I get CREAMED, because I can't build
enough heavy corvettes/Scouts/Interceptors/etc.

Bombers always seem to just destroy my OWN fighters... I'll have
a furball, and boom, no more interceptors or scouts... just my pesky
bombers. I lost >20 scouts in 15 seconds to my own bombers... is
there no IFF on those stupid things?

Can't seem to do it in mission 5. Mission 4 I could, though :(
> 2. Do aggressive salvage. It's faster than killing stuff,
> and you get to keep what you steal.
Yeah, that's what it appears to be, but I can't seem to beat
off the intial hordes in good shape. It's like I need to lure
the stuff in right away, but I can't fight off the carrier and
it's fighters et al right away.
> good luck,
>

Then you should notice the enemy fleet comes in a bit more broken up.
Send out corvettes to take out enemy fighters and the enemy resource
collectors.
If you draw the enemy out straight away then you will likely lose the
mission as the firepower of everything attacking at once can be
overwhealming.

I haven't actually TRIED that technique (I've always tried to harvest
to the max first, instead). I'm just saying that it seems like maybe I
need to harvest before the bad guys can build up much of a force.
