Can't slot the carrier in, won't move

I'm kinda embarrased to post the ultimate "stuck at the beginning"
question, but I'm in the test chamber, the carrier came up, and they
keep asking me to slot the carrier into the analysis port. I get
behind it and walk forward, I try use, jumping on top of it, pulling
from the front, nothing works. Bug, misfeature, or am I missing
something?

Thanks!

If it is a bug then I have no idea what it is, but normally if you just
place yourself behing the handle (between the wall and the carrier) and just
walk forward you should be fine.

Lol, and you call yourself a physicist, Gordon...

Standing behind the carrier and just moving forward should do the
trick, really. The carrier gets pushed along as you move. If that
doesn`t work, then something is wrong. I don`t know what it might be
though. Try looking over your control settings, maybe start over, that
sort of thing...

Are you using the latest patch?

That's what I thought, and I've reinstalled the game, reinstalled the
1.1.0.6 patch, reinstalled the latest video drivers, reinstalled
DirectX 8.0a, checked to make sure I can push the crates in the
training session. I guess it's time to start another game, remove and
reinstall the whole game from scratch, or abandon the silly thing.

Thanks for the hints!

Seriously, Will, if you`re able to move around normally in the game,
then you should be able to push the carrier forward too. Are you sure
it`s the carrier you`re trying to push?

There's a little robot thing that appeared from the floor inside a
grey cage that's holding a translucent golden sorta-pyramidal shape.
I get behind the robot, between it and the wall and walk towards the
analysis chamber in the middle of the floor. When I get to the
carrier I stop moving and it doesn't start moving.

I know this sounds like a really stupid question from a newless
cluebie, but I've been playing 1ps games since before Duke Nukem, and
it's acting like this one is really broken.

Is there any way I can put a saved game state on my ftp or WWWeb
server and have someone else see if I'm losing my mind? There are a
bunch of .HL? and .SAV files in the approriate directory....

That would be "Ricky", the Elaine-obsessed TV Guide-collecting mannequin
designer who first appeared in "The Cigar Store Indian", and who uttered
the line above as a cameo at the end of "The Pie".

Ah, a voice of reason among the barbarians...

You`re absolutely right, of course. You don`t get any points (because
you don`t collect them), but there`s always the glory... :)

Personally, I think that Seinfeld was/is pure brilliance. I find that
I either love or loathe american comedy shows. Frasier, Third Rock
From The Sun, The Simpsons and The Drew Carey Show are my favorites.
But swedes have always been looked upon as wannabe americans, so maybe
that`s the reason I like them...

Futurama is good, but I don`t think the "character design" is anywhere
near as good as it is in The Simpsons. There are so many funny
characters in The Simpsons, but In Futurama there`s Bender and that`s
pretty much it. I think that Friends should have done what Seinfeld
did and quit while they were at their best.

All IMO.

Yup, I was going to say the same thing myself (in the appropriate thread
;-) ), though I didn't think I'd seen enough episodes of Futurama to really
judge it. The Simpsons is loaded with great characters, even the minor
ones. They are all unique, and are always in-character :) I think Monty
Burns makes me laugh most, though.

I started a new game and it worked fine, after I sat thru the boring
train ride.

Now I'm stuck in the elevator to the surface in "We've Got Hostiles",
I get in the elevator, press the up button, and immediately after the
transition to the next game level I hear a sound like a helicopter, my
suit drains, I lose hit points, and die. The elevator doesn't move
(acts like it's jammed, kinda jitters in place), I can't move, can't
jump, can't crouch, can change weapons and fire, but nothing prevents
inevitable death.

Hmm, the Professor always has me rolling. :-) But I agree, Futurama
would benefit from some more depth. While they have a few decent
second-string characters (Zapp Brannigan, Kif), it'd be nice to add a
bunch more. Still, I find Futurama to be more consistently funny than
current episodes of The Simpsons, although both pale in comparison to
the older episodes of The Simpsons (not including the very early, very
crude episodes which were more mean-spirited than humorous).

> I think that Friends should have done what Seinfeld

Agreed. And though I'm a huge Seinfeld fan, they ended it none-too-soon;
the final couple of season were definitely starting to pale. Speaking of
which, I wish The Simpsons had given it up a few years ago and spared us
the annoying Scooby-Doo-style "Celebrity Cameo" episodes with famous
actors playing themselves, like the one featuring Alec Baldwin and Kim
Basinger (very bad!), or the one featuring Mel Gibson ("Worst...
Episode.... EVER!").

Unfortunately, Futurama is shown quite late here (and only once a
week) and I frequently miss it. The Simpsons is on almost every day,
though.

>Agreed. And though I'm a huge Seinfeld fan, they ended it none-too-soon;

You think? I thought it was fun to the end. I have many favorite
episodes, but the ones that stand out are The Soup Nazi, (that guy was
priceless, "No soup for you!"), The Marine Biologist (it was so funny
when George pulls out Kramer`s golf ball at the end), and the episode
where George and Elaine sort of switch places and Elaine becomes as
miserable as George ("It`s true... I`ve become George!").

Lainie, baby! :p

BTW, do you know if there`s any truth to the rumours that Seinfeld
might return again?

I think Paul mentioned E.R. That used to be another one of my favorite
shows, but I think it went downhill fast when the old characters left,
so I don`t watch it anymore. I still love NYPD Blue and Millennium
though, even if Millennium is handled so badly over here. It gets
shown sporadically once a month (roughly), doesn`t appear to have a
regular time and frequently gets the "filler" slot at 2 or 3 at
night...

I`m sick and tired of The X-Files and I have never seen a single
episode of The Sopranos! Yikes!

You think it`s boring? I think it`s quite clever myself. It gradually

Well, I thought so anyway.

This is your first visit to the surface? A lot of funny glitches have
been known to occur in that elevator. Previous advice have been to
crouch in the center or jump up and down. Last time I was here, I got
past it by pushing the button and then standing completely still. I
didn`t touch the mouse, didn`t move an inch, nothing, and got past
with no problems.

It was still very good, but became a bit inconsistent. For example, "The

ever. It's doubly disappointing because it starts out so strong, but the
ending (e.g. George's "candy bar lineup" and Kramer's "Thelma and Louise")
was just pathetic. I think the best seasons were 2 to 5 (The Contest, The
Parking Garage, The Junior Mint, etc.) , but there were excellent episodes
even in the final 8th and 9th seasons (The Chicken Roaster, The Serenity
Now, etc.).

> BTW, do you know if there`s any truth to the

I doubt it. Jerry said he'd never again do a TV show, and I think any rumors
are just that. He is definitely working on his stand-up career, however, and
is currently touring.

> I think Paul mentioned E.R. That used to be another one

Me either. I still watch an occasional episode, but I have no idea who
anyone is. :-) Part of ER's problem is that the writers too often fall back
on the crutch of tragedy striking the main characters: brain tumors,
stabbings, deaf children, etc. etc. I guess I find such cheap tricks kinda'
annoying.

> I still love NYPD Blue and Millennium
> though, even if Millennium is handled so badly over here.

Ahhh, Millenium. That show had so much promise, and it was just wasted. The
real problem is that every year they fired the entire writing staff and
completely changed the direction of the show! The first season was
excellent. The second season was completely different, but still very good.
And then the third season was again completely different, but not quite as
good. And then it was cancelled. Bummer.

> I`m sick and tired of The X-Files

I still enjoy the stand-alone episodes, but I find the "mythology" story-arc
episodes to be downright annoying. Chris Carter simply hasn't realized that
one can't create an engaging (and LOGICAL!) story arc without any planning
at all. It's like freakin' "Tommy Flanagan the Pathalogical Liar" telling a
story! "Okay, so there are these new monst- uh, creat-, uh, ALIENS! Yeah,
that's the ticket! Except they don't look like the other aliens, they look
like people! But not the one's we've seen before, these one's... um.... they
grow inside you and you shed your skin and you're an ALIEN! Yeah, that's the
ticket! My wife, uh, Morgan Fairchild loves this show..."

If you like the fun, goofy standalone X-Files episodes, you may enjoy "The
Lone Gunman", the X-Files spin-off. In fact, I think it's usual better than
current X-Files episodes!

I agree. It's one of the most eye-opening sequences I've ever seen in a
game. I remember it well.

My mate Gary loaded up HL and proceeded to show me the intro, I wasn't
impressed at all until he started looking around in the intro!

I think that was the nail in the coffin of my social life really, and no
regrets which is even more worrying :)

Hmm, I had forgotten about those episodes. The ones I truly disliked

Hollywood. It just didn`t fit somehow.

Well, I heard that he was dropping hints that "not having a job got
boring after a while". Previously, when he was asked if he might
return to Seinfeld one day, he would always launch into his "Who wants
a job?" routine.

Yeah, I also find fhe mythology part very annoying. I don`t think
anyone ever realized that it can`t be allowed to actually "finish",
because then the show would totally change direction. So instead we
have a constant alien threat, that is always *this close* (holds up
fingers) to invading, a government conspiracy always *this close* to
succeeding, but the good guys always win in the end. It gets
repetitive (and transparent) in a hurry...

Yep, I hear ya'. I think that was the one time they "sold out" and did a
typical sitcom stunt: the vacation episode a la "Brady Bunch goes to
Hawaii/Grand Canyon" or "Friends go to England".

> It`s cancelled? Damn, I didn`t even know that!

LOL! Chris Carter apparently felt bad that it was cancelled without any
resolution, so he had a special X-Files episode which tried to serve as a
finale for Millenium. Unfortunately, it didn't make a whole lot of sense,
especially after all the build-up of three seasons of Millenium mythology.

> It gets repetitive (and transparent) in a hurry...

And it never quite makes sense! A couple of years ago I watched the whole
5-year story arc of Babylon5 when TNT (a cable station over here) ran it in
order from beginning to end over a period of a few months. After seeing how
well-planned that entire series was, it's hard to appreciate such amateurish
ad hoc efforts like the X-Files mythology. As you've said, the X-Files
really doesn't have a planned end, so it never really goes anywhere. It's
just the same illogical crap told over and over, with new "twists" that come
outta nowhere and then are quickly dropped and forgotten.

Oh, forgot to add this in my other post: I agree with Spyder about "Malcolm
in the Middle"--it's probably one of the best new sitcoms of the year. Check
it out if/when your local stations start airing it.

I've got to agree with the first two sentences here. We didn't get past the

I stopped watching it for a while too, in the middle of last season. All of
a sudden, all these actors I'd never seen before started appearing in the
opening credits, in place of the familiar names. I gave up on it, but I've
started watching the current series recently (current in the UK, that is),
and the script and direction are still top-notch. I do agree with Bold that
there are too many dramatic events happening to the main characters now,
though. Nevertheless, they handle the drama with unparallelled skill.
Events such as Carter, the returning recovering drug addict doctor, saving a
gang victim's life with open-heart surgery in the ER, thus restoring his own
confidence in his medical skill, and then having a young girl walk in off
the street and blow the patient away, may be overly dramatic, but it is the
sort of drama that leaves you absolutely gobsmacked. Bring back Nurse
Carol, Doctor Susan and yes, even George Clooney though.

I never saw Manhunter, but I *did* read the excellent "Red Dragon" (the
Hannibal Lecter book upon which it was based) the week before Millenium
premiered, so I did notice some similarities. I was in full-on serial killer
appreciation mode that week. :-)

Millenium definitely doesn't have the quirky/funny aspects of X-Files, but
since that's intentional I wouldn't call it "humorless". It's supposed to be
dark, and I think they really pulled it off well.

Got around that one with a saved gamestate from a pointer on this
newsgroup. Had a similar problem in a couple of other places, the
elevator up from turning the generator on to run the train car, the
train partway along the track, sure seems like a Game Glitch to me.
In both of the other cases I managed to work around it (jumping in the
elevator so as not to 'stick to the floor', and restarting a recent
saved game in the other case), but "We Are Not Amused".

Thats was exactly how I got my sisters boyfriend hooked. I was going on
about Half-life so I fired up the intro for him.
He stopped at a computer store on the way home to buy it. Boo-yah!

There's dark and there's dark. I wouldn't argue for the unstomachable
'quirky' of X-Files, but a leavening of dark wit could have heightened the
horror/tension. As it was, it just came across as B grade 'Euro-horror',
full of unlikeable characters saying unbelievable things in unlikely
situations.

Maybe I'm just missing Homicide: Life on the Street.

No, really - he's quite superb in 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou', and I'm told
very good in 'Three Kings'. I thought he did well in 'Out of Sight' as
well, so maybe the days of showing emotion by moving his head rapidly to
look at various points of the compass are long gone.

Patch your game. These problems were fixed in the early patches for most
people. The "We've Got Hostiles" lift is the only one of these that
regularly occurs after patching.

Interesting.

According to my sources [1], he left at the end of the sixth (and
penultimate) series, which ties in with my comment - they haven't shown the
final series over here.

Well, I had to shave pretty deep, but it's a nice effect.

I still stick to the walls and floors (and surface of the water, and
rocks, and etc) on occasion, now I save my gamestate frequently and
revert to a few minutes earlier. I've applied the latest patch, and
it seems others have had similar problems. Sometimes jumping helps,
but it's definately not a stable game, and given it's life it's
probably never going to be. Pretty addictive, though... 8*)

Well, on your machine maybe not, but for thousands of others (including most
of us in here), the single player game has been rock-solid stable since it
was released, and certainly since the first or second patch. Sorry you've
had such trouble with it.
