too.

a low number of off topic posts? It seems to me we have a lot lately. And
the on
topic ones don't always stay on topic.
Yes, there's a bunch of established regulars, read a few days worth of posts
and you'll figure out who they are.

It sounds like you are using the in-game browser, I suggest you get
something like gamespt or pingtool (I use GS).

Get the from:

www.gamespy.com
www.pingtool.com

Also to improve your latency while in an internet game, go to:

www.tweak3d.net

Look for a link to HL tweaks, with a 56k modem (not a win-modem), you should
get pings between 150-250.

Oh yeah, check your video settings and make sure you are running in the best
res/mode for your card.

Yes there established regs here, I have been here basically from the start,
on and off.

Also there are varied trolls, a good place to find them in in alt.snetter

Killfile most of the people there and you will be fine (cept for owen
palmer, hes okay :) )

Welcome to Half-Life! I suggest you start to play Counter-Strike in
mulitplayer. www.Counter-Strike.net . The difference between normal
half-life and quake is that in counter-strike you aren't a walking tank, and
that dead is dead (for a few minutes).

Rather like AHL teamplay, in fact...

To Spyda:
There are quite a few MP mods available - assuming that you intend to play
multiplayer games, I'd suggest reading up on them, and trying the ones that
take your fancy.

A good place to look for mods is

http://www.planethalflife.com/modcentral

You should find an overview of each, whether they are released or not, and
links to their homepages. You may even want to play a bit of regular HL or
single player before you start playing MP mods.... :D

Well, I toyed yesterday with the idea of making a geek code for aghl,
a bunch of one letter codes to describe your hl and aghl style.

The scale for helpfulness went like this:

Helpfulness
H* = I am Paul Catley
H++ = I answer pleas for help except when i really dont have the time
H+ = I answer pleas for help when I'm sure I know the answer and
nobody else has answered
H = I answer pleas for help sometimes when i feel like it, and
sometimes even when i dont know the answer
H- = I rarely answer pleas for help, and then often off topic
H-- = hey I did it without help why can't they

hey you were asking for it. telling people you can predict
them is sure to make them do unpredictable things.

Iphigenie

by the way, anyone know of a way to tell OE to always put the cursor
(and the sig) below a post and not on top? I always have to cut and paste
my sig to reply below...
and if I'm in a hurry and dont think i end up replying on top and that
makes it hard to follow a thread...

No offence intended, I meant my classification, not your system. That was
the *old* me.

The code is funny :) I bet you started with C++ and took it from there!
How long have you been working on that? Why not program a mod instead?

Dunno... that's the accepted netiquette, isn't it? Come to think of it,
IIRC a very irritating thread from long ago, it isn't (allegedly), but who
cares? I don't find it hard to follow a thread that way, in fact I hate
scrolling down through the whole message thread that someone forgot to edit,
just to find a single line at the bottom. I sometimes copy & paste
individual sentences to the top if it seems more readable, or if I feel like
it.

Please let's not start a debate on this again. I hated that one.

I didnt want to start a debate, just to know if there's a way to
set this in OE.
My natural tendency is to snip a lot and reply below, but replying
on the top works fine too, it does not distrub me at all when other
people do it.
What disturbs me is that if i'm not paying attention I end up sending
posts my text at the bottom (or in between post pieces) and
my sig all alone at the top, giving the impression I sent an
empty post.
I solved this by telling OE not to paste my sig all the time and
manually going in the insert menu, but usually that means i post
with no sig cause I'm too lazy...

no offence even remotely perceived
both the *old* you and the *new* you (not quite sure what the difference is)
are

> The code is funny :) I bet you started with C++ and took it from there!

well there's an official geek code for geeky computer things, it's huge and
complicated (more on the unix side of geekiness
http://www.geekcode.com/geek.html,
they are working on a new version too)
Then I saw on another newsgroup I read that they had developed their own
silly geek code
(with categories like beer and sheep and food related ones etc) and I
thought: it could be
funny to create one (I used theirs for the inspiration). Took me less about
an hour, last night,
waiting for the bash, and as you can see I never finished it

anyone of these inspire you:

Ahh. Well under those circumstances I would cut & paste the entire message
to which you're replying above your sig before you start :) I tend to copy
a bit at a time, then write my reply to that bit, copy, paste, reply, etc.,
then delete the whole message from below my sig!

I know you didn't want to start a debate. I was worried that I might. (The
previous irritating thread on this topic started when some self-appointed
netiquette lawyer decreed that we weren't posting in the "accepted" manner.
As far as we regulars were concerned, it's only accepted if everyone is
doing it. He hated OE for going against "the rules", wherever they were
handed down from).

wow, that's a bit of work there. I find it easier to go down reading through
the message, snipping out and replying, and putting my sig in at the bottom.

nah, we can stifle any debate if we really want to... just hitch hike

Nothing wrong with hijacking a thread. Hello, greetings and salutations
can only go so far anyway.

Hmm, depends on which newsgroups you hang out on.

alt.games.starcraft no females present, my primary hang out.

alt.startrek.vs.starwars one present, my secondary hangout

alt.games.diablo one present, haven't been there in a while though.

alt.games.tiberian-sun non present, doesn't suprise me either, that
place has pretty much gone to the dogs :-)

alt.games.wing-commander non that I know of, I only ever pass through
that one. Seems pretty troll free with reasonable on-topic conversation.
A bit of an enigma really that group, given the length of time since the
last WC game came out.
