Hi Kenneth, I'm kinda in the same sitch: I bought the standalone
version of TFC from the kind folks at real.com
(www.real.com/games/teamfortress) last July when it was released, and
have been playing online ever since, up until two days ago anyway,
when the 1104 patch was released. Then all but 3 of the hundreds of
servers I used to connect to became greyed out and non-connectable to:
"You cannot connect to server running a different protocol than
yours." I visited sierra's Half-Life support page
http://www.sierrastudios.com/games/half-life/support-index.html
on the day of the patch release and midway down the page they had a
section for the Initial Encounter owners of TFC standalone to get a
patch to upgrade and once again be able to play on 1101 servers that
are now 1104. You undoubtedly saw this on that page as well. I figured
this patch was for me too as I have the standalone version of TFC.
However, they mysteriously stated the patch was for the TFC standalone
version "only available with Initial Encounter". Well, that kinda
irked me a little - do they not know about the real.com version that's
purchaseable and downloadable online and also "standalone TFC", or
were they just giving us real.com users the gip? Well, I downloaded
tf5152.exe and ran it and didn't get very far - "Your Half-Life
install is not the correct language version for this update" was the
error message I received. Huh? The support page said it was for all
versions... I then emailed Sierra tech support, and I also emailed
Valve. No answer yet after 2 days and now that it's the weekend I
doubt I'll be hearing from them until Monday at the earliest. The only
"response" I've gotten is that on the HL support page at
sierrastudios.com I listed above, the entire section about Initial
Encounter is *gone* w/o a trace, and so is the tf5152.exe file from
their ftp servers (ftp3.sierra.com/pub/patches/pc is the URL they had
listed on Wednesday for tf5152.exe). I'm sure you've probably noticed
this too. Incidentally, I had to get tf5152.exe from 3dgamers.com
because on Wednesday there was no tf5152.exe at ftp3.sierra.com. Then
on Thursday it appeared in the pub/patches/pc dir but I wasn't going
to redownload it until I heard from somebody on what was going on.
Well, I probably shoulda grabbed it since its gone now... But since
you your version from fileplanet and still got the HL executable
error, it was probably the same tf5152.exe everywhere.
So, I'm pretty much having to wait around and play 2fort on the 3
servers that didn't upgrade to 1104 (the remnant, lol...) until Valve
or Sierra answer my emails or post a patch on their support page that
works for IE users as well as the real.com users. I was able to get
around the "Incorrect language update" problem and extract the files
from tf5152.exe using an Installwise .exe-file extractor
(http://pleiku.vietmedia.com/protoools/files/decompilers/e_wise.zip if
your interested - its a tiny DOS app) and just manually copy
everything into my teamfortress directory, but upon running tfc.exe -
I got the infamous "Your executable modified" error. :( No luck there.
I'm assuming you were able to run tf5152.exe just fine though? No
"Incorrect language update" error? And you got a new tfc.exe file
dated 10/23/00? Did you also get all the standard maps (crossover2,
cz2, warpath, etc...) that weren't even updated like 2fort and
dustbowl were? Seems like a waste of space to include maps we already
have if they aren't even new versions, which they weren't. They were
all dated July 2000.
>
>One additional oddity, the titlebar for the big screen-filling installation

I did see that discrepancy too - it said 5152 on the window title bar
but the first screen of the install program said "Welcome to the 5151
update for TFC"... But then when they get to the Readme a few screens
later its back to 5152. <shrug> Seems like they might've threw this
patch together in a hurry, maybe even as an afterthought, hehe. Might
explain this contradiction, the needless inclusion of maps we already
have, and why the tf5152 patch suddenly vanished from their support
page and ftp servers.
Anyway, just wanted to share my 2 cents worth of experiences with the
1104 update "International Event". Hehe. ;-) Let me know if you hear
anything more from Sierra or you see a new patch for us standalone TFC
users. I suspect there'll be one for you IE folks and a separate one
for me and the rest of the Real.com purchasers. But who knows... I'll
post again to this group if I hear back or locate/see a new patch.
Thanks for the dialogue - its nice to get support from somewhere
(since Sierra's mum these days).

They probably checksum the executable and say that if there's any mismatch.

No, but just confirmed it. I sent them email and got a reply telling me
that I should check for the CIH virus. Did that, no virus. That they pulled
the patch seems to indicate that the patch is at fault.

Agreed, that's what I figured. I was just happy to see it come out, as the
last patch didn't come out until months after the patch for the full game.

BTW, no need to use my name in the subject line if you reply to my

like that?
Before the Internet we didn't need patches for multiplayer games ;-)
The patching of single player HL stopped with 1.0.0.8, I believe.

Yeah, they only just added the demo on 3dfiles.com on 10/18, lol. Came
out on 7/20/00 or so. And in this case, late is no better than never,
until they release patches for the demo and the full version anyway.
:-/ That poor Gilles Auger guy found that out the hard way. "Sure,
here's demo for you. Oh, what's that? Can't connect to 99% of the
servers out there? Gee, sorry about that." And as we are now at a
week's anniversary of the 1104 release, and no word or indication on
when and if I.E. and Real.com standalone TFCs will be patched...
<sigh>
>They probably checksum the executable and say that if there's any mismatch.
Yeah, I tried deleting the hl.dat as was suggested in this group but
that had no effect.

Yeah, I still haven't even heard back from them, but I don't want to
flood them with annoying emails either. I dunno, maybe they figure
since I bought it through Real.com I have to go through them and not
Sierra...

Well then since you got it to run completely without any "wrong
language" fatal errors, I guess that all but proves that tf5152.exe
was specifically for you I.E. owners only and was probably never even
intended for Real.com users, as was indicated on their support page
before they yanked tf5152.

Yeah, all the maps from tf5151 were included in tf5152, whether they
needed to be or not, which further supports our theory that tf5152 was
a bad or just a hastily thrown together patch.
>Agreed, that's what I figured. I was just happy to see it come out, as the

I guess they tried to avoid that lengthy delay, but couldn't quite
pull off a simultaneous release with the HL 1104 patch and at the same
time make the I.E. patch actually work. Guess there's only so many
hours in a day, and, naturally, the priority was for Half-Life full
owners, since they by far outnumber I.E. and Real.com users, I would
wager.

Aside from the reports here on the 1105 server-side patch, it seems
pretty quiet in here, and on the Half-Life support page as well. I've
been wearily watching all the news sites such as planethalflife and
stomped, but any and all news only concerns the HL 1104 patch and the
server-side patch that should be released soon. Not a peep about I.E.
or Real.com patches. Not really surprised about that either as hardly
any of the Half-Life sites bothered to mirror tf5152.exe.

;-) Indeed... Long distance support call bills were much more common,
hehehe. Thank the gods for email and usenet.

Ah, ok, yeah, Agent can sort by date or thread or subject. I usually
go by date. But I addressed specifically to you because of the unique
nature of the whole Initial Encounter and Real.com versions. I'll just
post this as a follow-up though and not a new topic.
I do have a question about I.E., since I've found an online retailer
that has it for a cheap $8.12 (onvia.com). Or at least I'm assuming
that's cheap since other places have it for $15 and up. You mentioned
earlier that you have 2 copies of I.E. for the additionaly CD Keys,
but I'm unclear on how useful the I.E. CD-keys are. Can you use
Initial Encounter & its CD key to join any multiplayer game (TFC,
Counterstrike, Firearms, Science & Industry, or just the Half-Life DM
maps, or any other MP mod) or is it somehow limited as far as what you
can connect to with it? I guess I should rephrase that "can" to
"could" since I'm assuming the regular 1104 patch doesn't patch
Initial Encounter up to 1104 in regards to multiplayer, does it? I
wouldn't of course grab I.E. until they release a specific 1104 patch
for it, but it seems like it'd be a better deal than buying $45
Half-Life full just for the multiplayer, if indeed one can connect to
all the types of multiplayer there are with the I.E. CD-key. Let me
know your thoughts on this. Thanks, and thanks for replying.

Your patience has been rewarded! :-) I just noticed over at
PlanetFortress (http://www.planetfortress.com/) that current patches
have been released for the Real.com versions of TFC.
Here's what a Real.com representative posted to the PF forums a
couple of hours ago:

Hi all,
Just wanted to drop in and let you know that the patch to upgrade the
standalone version of TFC is now live at Real.com games. If you
downloaded the free or plus versions from real.com and are looking to
get back into the action, just go to the following URL and follow the

Someone else posted to aghltfc a letter from Valve apologizing for
mistakenly posting tfc5152.exe, that it was a mistake. (I'll paste it
below.)

I've only used the IE keys for TFC play and don't know if they work with
other mods. I'm hoping for a new big disk for xmas so I can load and try
out cstrike. I *think* back when I first got IE that the keys could be used
in the full version to allow me to connect but then WON stopped accepting
them unless I actually launched from the IE version of TFC.
Here's the Valve response:

At 10/31/2000 07:56 AM we wrote - This message is caused by
installing the TF5152 update listed on our web site for the stand
alone version of Team Fortress Classic. Unfortunately this patch
was uploaded on accident, was never meant for public consumption and
does not support the English language version of the game. This
includes both the standard retail version and the downloadable
version purchasable from Real.com.
We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. While the
release date for the actual English stand alone update is not final
at this time, you will be able to find it at http://www.sierra.com
as soon as it is completed.
To remove the incorrect patch you will need to uninstall TFC and
Half Life Day One (if installed) using the Sierra Utilities found in
your Windows Start Menu. After the uninstall is complete, reboot
the computer and then proceed to reinstall the game.
Description:
When will a good patch be available so I can play TFC on line again?
I downloaded the patch TF 5152 but after installing the patch I got
an error message that my Half Life executable was modified (well,
DUH!)
and that I should scan for a virus and reinstall HL. No virus was
found (unless you want to call TF 5152 a virus).
