I have a list of cheat codes to play half life (the first one) but don't
know how to access the menu.
I've read something about a console command, any ideas?
Thanks,
Will Hay

On the older version of Half-Life anyone could easily access the console
by pushing the ~ key. However, when Valve released the "patch of doom"
and ruined many aspects of Half-Life, they also decided that not everyone
needed the console, thereby making it harder to access. Some people can
still access console using the ~ key always for some reason. If you cannot
bring it down by pushing that, you'll want to do this.
Make a shortcut to your hl.exe file. Right-click the shortcut and select
properties. At the end of the 'target' box add -console.
So your target line should look like this (or something similar)...

C:\SIERRA\Half-Life\hl.exe -console

Now you should be able to access the console using the ~ key.
Hope this helps you out!

Go to your HL dir. Right drag the HL.EXE onto your desktop, and click
"Create Shortcut Here". Next, right-click on the shortcut, and click
"Properties". In the "Target"-field, write " -console" after the dir,
and the .exe, so it says something like this :

"C:\Sierra\Halflife\hl.exe -console", or whatever the path to your HL
dir is...

Next, you double click this new, and nice shortcut, and start up a new
game. When it has been launched, you press the ~ (tilde) - key, and
the console pops out. Here you can write all your wonderful cheat
codes, such as sv_cheats 1 (for activating cheats), and so on....

But remember kids, cheating is only funny when you're cheating
yourself. Nothing interesting, or remotely funny about cheating in
multiplayer mode, don't do it. And, oh yeah : Stay in school.....!

No, that's incorrect. You have to manually enable the console with the
older versions of Half-Life in exactly the same manner as with the newer
versions. Valve hasn't changed this at all. As someone who has
repeatedly reinstalled my original orange-box Half-Life, version
1.0.0.5, I can assure you it doesn't enable the console by default.

No, the only thing that happened with the 110x patch, was that "Console" was,
by default, set to 0 in the config.cfg (I assume that was an accident? -
normally new patches don't overwrite config settings) ... open up config.cfg
in notepad, and find the line which says "Console" (no quotes).. make sure it
reads

Console "1"
(inc. quotes)

you might find that the value in quotes also reads "1.00000" ... in this case
you should remove the decimal point and the zeros.

with this setting, the console *should* work in multiplayer, whether you start
hl with -console or not.

Ok, so it was still a variable to be toggled on and off, but by default my HL (and all the
versions I have played) had console set to "1" in the config file after a clean install. The
patch changed it to "0", effectively changing something that really needed no change.
